Juli bis 1. August 1993. Eines der beliebtesten audiophilen Worldmusic-Alben kehrt endlich auf die Plattenteller zurück: „Hope“ von Hugh Masekela! Und zwar in einer Version, die sich gewaschen hat. Die Konzerte im Blues Alley (Washington D.C.) wurden 1993 für Triloka in großartiger Qualität mitgeschnitten, und die analogen Originalbänder von Kevin Gray mit höchster Sorgfalt überspielt. Anders als die zuletzt erschienene 45er-Fassung bietet diese Vierer-LP endlich wieder das Album in seiner vollständigen Version mit allen zwölf Tracks! Das auf Hifi-Vorführungen so gerne präsentierte 10-minütige „Stimela“ (der Kohlenzug) ist dabei nicht der einzige Song, der für Gänsehaut sorgt. Hugh Masekela, der im Januar 2018 in Johannesburg verstarb, und seine Band bieten eine mitreißende Mischung aus Jazz und afrikanischer Folklore, dargeboten in atemberaubender Intensität. Der Trompeter und Sänger Masekela, geboren in Südafrika, blickt bei den sieben Stücken auf eine Epoche von fünf Jahrzehnten und einer wechselvollen Zeit zurück, die auch die Apartheit überdauerte. Dass manche Wunden nicht verheilen, macht gerade „Stimela“ deutlich - hören Sie die emotionale Tiefe dieser Musik und lassen sich in eine andere Welt entführen! Eine fantastische Platte, jetzt durch Kevin Gray bei Cohearent Audio remastered von den Originalbändern, und endlich komplett auf 45 rpm zu haben - die Klangqualität steigt gegenüber der 33er-Version noch einmal deutlich an, und dieses tolle Album ist das auch allemal wert! *********************************************************************************************** Rezension: Der endlich absehbare Machtwechsel in Südafrika hatte sicherlich etwas damit zu tun, daß Hugh Masekela auf diesen beiden 1993er Konzerten in Washington, D.C., seine Biographie in musikalischer Form Revue passieren ließ: "Languta" lernte er als Achtjähriger im Jahre 1947; "Abangoma" ist die Art von Mischung aus Jazz und afrikanischer Musik, die der Trompeter Mitte der 60er spielte; sein größter Hit "Grazin' In The Grass" ist ebenso repräsentiert wie spätere Begegnungen mit südafrikanischen Jazzmusikern. Was dabei herauskam, gilt mit Recht als eines der besten Weltmusik-Werke überhaupt… Dies sollte nun die endgültige Ausgabe sein: Alle zwölf Titel des Albums (die erste 45 UPM-Ausgabe hatte nur sieben), auf acht Seiten verteilt.
