Leonid Kogan gehört zu den bedeutendsten Vertretern der russisch-jüdischen Schule des Violinspiels im 20. Jahrhundert, und es war wohl nur seine eigene Scheu vor der Öffentlichkeit, die ihn stets im Schatten seines berühmten Freundes, Mentors und Kollegen David Oistrakh bleiben ließ. Kogans Spiel stieß in der schwelgerischen Ästhetik der 50er Jahre, in die ein Großteil seiner leider viel zu kurzen Karriere fiel, auf wenig Gegenliebe: Energie und Ausdrucksstärke stellte er über das Ideal des schönen Klangs, hinzu kamen sein vibrato-armes Spiel und die Tatsache, dass er als einer der ersten Violinisten seiner Generation von Darm- auf Stahlsaiten umstieg. Doch dass Kogan trotzdem alles andere als ein rauer und harter Spieler war, das beweist diese Aufnahme von 1957: Kogan nahm Beethovens Violinkonzert, diesen unumgänglichen Meilenstein der Gattung, insgesamt fünfmal auf, doch diese, seine erste Aufnahme, ist bei weitem die lockerste, humorvollste und spielfreudigste. Dennoch beeindruckt Kogans Interpretation vor allem durch ihre pointierte und präzise Rhythmik und den schlanken, nüchternen Ton. Weil die hervorragend gemachte Mono-Aufnahme Ende der 50er dann doch als nicht mehr konkurrenzfähig zu den immer häufiger werdenden Stereo-Aufnahmen gesehen wurde, landete sie in den Archiven, und wird jetzt erstmals auf Vinyl veröffentlicht - und das lohnt sich definitiv! EMI beschloß, die Aufnahme zurückzuhalten, da 1957 die Einführung der Stereo-Technologie unmittelbar bevorstand; zwei Jahre später spielte Kogan das Konzert dann unter Constantin Silvestri noch einmal ein – eine der bis heute bedeutendsten Aufnahmen des Konzertes. Der direkte Vergleich zwischen jener und der nun erstmals auf Schallplatte vorliegenden früheren ist frappierend: So (vergleichsweise) leicht, scheinbar spontan musizierend hat man den russischen Meister selten gehört, die lyrischen Passagen sind von besonderer Süße, und im Finale blitzt geradezu so etwas wie Lebensfreude auf! Ob es ein besonderes Band der gegenseitigen Sympathie zwischen dem Geiger und dem belgischen Dirigenten gab, ob Kogan generell in psychisch besonders ausgeglichener Verfassung war oder ob die Euphorie, dieses ihm besonders wichtige Konzert (neben dem von Brahms) erstmals für die Schallplatte einzuspielen, eine Rolle spielte, wird sich nicht mehr rekonstruieren lassen; fest steht: Dies ist eine essentielle Ergänzung der Diskographie eines der größten Violinisten des 20. Leonid Borisovich Kogan was born on Nov. 14, 1924, in the Ukraine. His father played the violin as an amateur and the sound so fascinated the boy that by age 3 he would not go to sleep unless he had the fiddle beside him. After age 5 he began taking lessons on the instrument. He made his first public appearance playing, at age 10. His official concert debut came playing the Brahams Concerto with the Moscow Philharmonic in 1941. For the celebrated violinist, his interpretation of the Beethoven Concerto was one of the glories of his era; none of his contemporaries played it with such consistent stylistic command or such intellectual and spiritual penetration. EMI decided to withhold the recording since the introduction of stereo technology was imminent in 1957; Two years later, Kogan again played the concert under Constantin Silvestri, one of the most important recordings of the concert.
