Und doch nahmen die Beach Boys, nun als kreatives Kollektiv, unter diesen Bedingungen großartige Musik auf. Anfangs unbemerkt, das 1971er "Sunflower" war das am schlechtesten verkaufte Album der Bandgeschichte und sah die Top 100 nur von weitem. Erst Jahre später wurde es rehabilitiert, die Song-Pretiosen vor allem aus den Händen von Dennis Wilson und Bruce Johnston (aber auch Mike Love und sogar Al Jardine beteiligten sich am Songwriting) angemessen gewürdigt. Dem genau ein Jahr später erscheinenden "Surf's Up" erging es deutlich besser – immerhin ein Platz 29, und das abschließende Song-Trio von Meister Brian Wilson garantierte eine direkte Aufnahme in den Kanon der Hauptwerke. Wobei man auch dieses Album keineswegs auf jene drei Songs reduzieren darf: Insbesondere Carl Wilson erlebte hier seine künstlerische Emanzipation! – Die 4 LP-Variante ergibt für den Sammler und Fan sicherlich mehr Sinn: LPs 1 und 3 entsprechen dem Doppelalbum, dazu gibt es pro Album eine LP mit weiteren Bonustracks, insgesamt sind es damit 42 Extra-Tracks (die 5 CD-Variante enthält allerdings 108!). Spannend darunter sind wie schon bei den entsprechenden Editionen der "Pet Sounds"- und "Smile"-Sessions vor allem A capella-Versionen oder deren Gegenteil, die reinen Instrumental-Spuren, lassen sich hier die sagenhaften Arrangements aufschlüsseln und nachvollziehen. Was Live-Versionen aus den 80ern oder 90ern darunter zu suchen haben, ist schleierhaft, es sind aber glücklicherweise Ausnahmen.
