Vorliegendes Album, aufgenommen während des ersten von ihm initiierten Aufenthalts der Venezianer in London, ist für Analogpuristen quasi eine Provokation: Valentine kombinierte nämlich seine ein halbes Jahrhundert alten Röhrenmikrophone mit einem brandneuen Nagra-Digitalrekorder und schnitt das Ergebnis dann auf 45 Touren. Mike Valentine is a big fan of the work of Doug Sax's & Lincoln Mayorja's Sheffield Lab recordings. The vision was to produce a truly unique and vibrant classical release on vinyl. This method, although technically risky (A problem with the cut or pressing could result in total failure) is certainly purest and eliminates the multi tracking stage entirely. A few microphones (including Mike's preferred Neumann M50 Decca Tree array) and two tracks straight from Studio One's Custom Neve 8056 were all that was used apart from a passive insert box, elliptical equaliser and the lathes electronics. The sound of the test cut genuinely knocked everyone’s socks off. John says "The mids shone like I've never heard before, in fact they were quite forward so I asked Jake to back them off a bit on the console, I feel like this is what I want to hear every time from vinyl". Anyone who entered the room that day for a playback was in agreement that it sounded three dimensional and open. Certainly this is no gimmick, it's a wholly impractical and expensive way to work, but cutting straight to lacquer has an unequivocally pure but rich tonality and clarity. This provided a great opportunity to record the orchestra's vibrant performance as well as the reaction of the audience who really seemed to enjoy the whole affair. And the overall sound quality? Well, I think our new album has the “jump factor”, but this time I hope that you will feel that Clare is standing right in the centre of the speakers and if there was a knob on the desk, which was marked foot tapping, I have this time been able to turn it all the way up to ten. It will also be a unique opportunity to hear a master tape which we recorded at the same time at 30 ips on 1⁄2 “ tape The great day dawned and with much trepidation we all turned up at Air studios at 9 AM. Remember, with a direct cut process, everything has to be recorded live in one take. There is no editing or mixing down or sweetening. You have only one day to rehearse, mix and cut both sides of the album. No digital toys were used at all and the stereo signal from the desk was passed up two floors to John Webber, Air’s long-standing cutting engineer, who again used a Neumann VMS 80 lathe. Rupert Coulson created a fantastic mix and again I was looking for a “you are there” balance. Have we achieved it? Well, I loved the shuffling sound of the band turning the pages of the score and if you listen carefully, you can almost hear Chris the leader, counting everyone in. The choice of microphone itself was obvious, for if you look at photographs of many of the old sessions recorded in the era, you will see a big fat sexy valve powered microphone, the ubiquitous Neumann U47. I have used this beautiful old mic on many sessions and even though its design is over fifty years old, I have really found nothing to touch its quality in the modern world. Our mixing desk was built by Neve over thirty years ago, which obviously also adds to the great warm sound. The first of the consoles was designed in 1977 and destined for AIR’s new facility on the Caribbean island of Montserrat. The legendary Beatles producer and founder of Air Studios, George Martin (1926-2016) was heavily involved with Rupert Neve in the design process of what was a radical new desk at the time. For the technical amongst you this 56 channel, 24 track desk has toroidal wound transformers, instead of the standard audio Neve transformers, just as toroidal transformers are favoured by many audiophiles, especially me. Sound quality was the key aim here, as it always should be. Recording direct-to-disk is difficult enough. The entire side has to be cut in one long take. Consider a big band vocal album like this, which has four songs per side. The orchestra and singer have to be ready as soon as the cutting stylus hits the lacquer and then they have to perform flawlessly on each track, pausing but a few seconds between songs. Often these records sound stilted and mannered as no one wants to produce a "clam" and ruin the whole thing but here everything works perfectly, with the mellifluous Clare Teal backed by The Syd Lawrence Orchestra—a brash and brassy ensemble. Incredibly, it was ll rehearsed, mixed and cut to lacquer at Air Studios in one day!, under the supervision of producer Mike Valentine and co-producer Francoise Valentine. So first, who is Clare Teal? She's well-known in the U.K. In 2004, the then thirty one year old singer was signed to Sony Jazz, in a deal that at the time was the biggest recording deal in U.K. jazz history. Teal, for all intents and purposes, sounds like a 1940's era singer transported to 2016, not just in her phrasing but particularly her vocal timbre. I can think of no other female vocalist today who hits this particular nostalgic mark and does so without it sounding forced or archaic. Instead it sounds refreshing and generous. Entitled ‘A Tribute To Spain’ the programme included two pieces from Bizet, concert performances with mezzo-soprano Rosie Middleton, together with Rimsky Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol and Chabrier’s Espana, these classical showpieces. It was a large orchestra, filling the ‘large hall’ recording auditorium at AIR, this long established performing group is called the National Symphony Orchestra (which is freelance), here conducted by the noted Debbie Wiseman. Mike ambitiously masters in multiple formats to get many bites at the sonic cherry, including direct cut to vinyl lacquer, this done at the silent mastering suite high up in the building. More easily organised in the main control, the stereo signal also goes to a Studer A80 analogue tape recorder , and to a Nagra stereo digital recorder, plus the Air in-house facilities these including real time HD and DSD encodings. Decca tree elevated, centre right, tubed Neumann M50 By definition these were live takes, recorded in their entirely after some rehearsal and will not be subject to editing. In any case editing cannot be performed on a direct cut lacquer master disc. The sessions were in part chosen to fit successive sides of an LP master and in the event over 90% of the available space was used. Filling a disc up, as used to be done, makes no sense at all for an audiophile production where the intention is to maintain high quality sound to the end of the piece and not to use up the disc to the end of the physical record. The National Symphony Orchestra is well practiced in playing to order, and got on with the job in timely fashion helping the whole production to run quite smoothly. This was a brilliant day with great performances and great balancing." - HiFi Pig Magazine, February 2017Features: Earlier in the year Mike Valentine’s most ambitious recording project to date came to fruition when he brought the NSO together with conductor Debbie Wiseman and mezzo soprano Rosie Middleton at Air Studios in north London. This was the first orchestral direct cut vinyl recording he had done and as you can imagine it wasn’t cheap. But once he had explained to the musicians that it was essentially a live performance without an audience they came to terms with the unusual by recording standards approach that a direct cut requires. Because each side of the vinyl has to be cut in one go there is no opportunity for the performers to do multiple takes or to have much of a break between pieces. But this was a professional orchestra with a lot of experience and once the concept was clear it was plain sailing. Mike and his engineer Rupert Coulson combined Chasing the Dragon’s favoured Decca tree microphone arrangement with individual mics on most of the musicians and mixed a small amount of the latter with the more reverberant sound picked up by the three mics on the tree. For this recording they also used a binaural or dummy head, this is designed to pick up sound in the same manner as our ears and produces results that work particularly well with headphones. The feed from this was recorded on a two channel Nagra digital recorder and has been released as a download and a CD. I heard a sample of the change from the regular stereo feed to the dummy head through headphones and was very impressed with the way it projects the sound to give a loudspeaker like experience with acres of space and no sense of it being in your head. Mike was so impressed with the results that he has embarked on a series of binaural head recordings for the label. The music chosen for España was selected partly for its dynamic impact, this is a bit like the stereosound dem records of the late fifties when stereo was the latest thing. But none of those were cut direct to disc with modern equipment and none have the scale and depth of image that this does. I have heard a number of CtD’s direct cuts but this has to be the most impressive, largely because it’s the biggest ‘band’, and it has some serious tympani, so the low end is glorious while the mids and trebles project a huge soundstage. The performance is excellent as well, I’m not that familiar with these pieces: España by Chabrier, Bizet’s Carmen and Gypsy Song and Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio Espagnol, so can’t tell you how they rank in the general scheme of things but it’s a dramatic and rousing experience to listen to nonetheless. It's difficult enough to record Direct-to-Disc a string ensemble, or a big band or a big band with vocalist, all of which the label has done successfully managed. However, recording a full symphony orchestra produces a series of additional challenges, especially when you add excerpts from Bizet's "Carmen" that feature a vocalist. Yet Mike and Francoise Valentine who run Chasing the Dragon didn't let the potential problems stop them from trying. Leaving aside the orchestra and vocalist choices, recording an orchestra D2D poses other problems of both cost and logistics, yet despite all of this, the Valentines chose to go right ahead and do this (self-funded), thank you very much! They selected The National Symphony Orchestra (NSO) and for the vocalist Rosie Middleton. The NSO, founded in the 1940s, is today the most recorded orchestra at Abbey Road studios and regularly tours the U.K. The orchestra's recorded works are for the most part film scores. It is a "freelance" orchestra, with members chosen for particular projects based upon the musical requirements. You can read here about the young Mezzo-Soprano Rosie Middleton. Conductor Debbie Wiseman (MBE) is well-known to British audiences as both a conductor and film composer. So yes, this is a quality orchestra led by an experienced conductor and Ms. Middleton is also an established vocalist but don’t expect Price, the LSO or Ataulfo Argenta (and I’m not even sure those folks could have performed at full speed knowing they were recording D2D) but do expect an exceptional recording and a “molto” enjoyable listening experience. Before getting to the performances, also consider that the venue is AIR Studios, not a concert hall. That means the sonic perspective will be somewhat altered from that of a hall recording. AIR is a de-sanctified church featuring a large, high-ceilinged main room that’s been treated but can still sound “cavernous”. The orchestra is somewhat crammed into the space in an extreme semi-circle and while this can work very well for film score recording, the sonic perspective here is somewhat unusual. To the producers’ credit, in order to produce a coherent soundstage and excellent imaging they went with a “Decca tree” microphone configuration (visible in the photos and video) augmented with spot mics around the room. For film scoring it’s more likely that multi-miking would be used. As reported in the original story, there was also a “dummy head” used for a high resolution digital and CD resolution binaural recording. Music and Sound The program opens with Ms. Middleton’s “L’amour” from Carmen—a familiar melody that she must sing minus the backing chorus. She does a fine job, bringing more lust and zest to the performance than it seemed she had brought watching her sing it live. That’s the difference between studio and stage where you have to “sell” it to the audience. She just had to sell it to the microphone! She did. Don’t forget this is D2D so when she’d finished, she stepped away from the microphone and in real time Ms. Wiseman readied the orchestra and signaled the downbeat for “España”. This produces serious pressure on all involved, especially since the entire program had to be repeated three times as I remember it. The main melody was turned into the pop hit song “Hot Diggity, Dog Diggity” sung by Perry Como, so some of you "oldsters"will be well familiar with it even if you don’t know “España”. The performance here, not unexpectedly, doesn’t quite catch fire the way the Argenta/LSO’s does. It reminded me of a careening hot air balloon repeatedly bouncing off the ground instead of “sticking” the landing. The somewhat sluggish tempo added to that sensation as did the sonic perspective, which was more distant than the photo or the miking would suggest, and that’s because of the room’s “wet” reverb qualities. I stood in that room during a rehearsal close to the celli and double basses and what the microphones “heard” is what I heard live: “big” bass drums, warm overall sound. The room is “alive”. The only way to tame it would be to stick a microphone on everything, but that would defeat the “purist” purpose and certainly mess with soundstage coherence among other things. The orchestra more successfully performs the billowy “Capriccio Espagnol”, which opens with a dramatic flourish that the orchestra also handles well, though somewhat more tentatively than you’ll hear on recordings that can be edited and spliced. Again, the perspective is mostly deep and distant with a great deal of bass warmth as heard in the room but there’s a lovely bit of fiddling (sorry using that term) caught by I assume spot mikes on the violins to the conductor’s left. Overall Rimsky-Korsakov’s orchestral suite based on Spanish folk melodies is pleasingly, though somewhat tentatively performed and richly recorded, though with a somewhat distant perspective. If your system already has a rich, bass heavy sonic perspective this recording might be too much for it. If yours lives in the tonal “neutral zone” you’ll find pleasing the recording’s overall warmth, though the tympani overwhelm at times on the recording as in the room. Yes the overall sound is somewhat distant and overly rich on bottom and the brass and woodwinds get at times smothered but the record is a more or less honest document of the sound I heard in the room. On the other hand, the Cinemascopic “dummy head” Binaural CD resolution WAV file I was sent (that’s for sale on the company's website along with hi-rez downloads) loses much of the D2D’s liquidity, transparency and enormous spatiality (especially in terms of stage depth). It is not nearly as much “fun” to listen to, but its overall tonal balance and detail resolution make it a more successful overall document of what went on that day at AIR Studios. That said, the D2D record’s transparency, three-dimensionality and dynamic “slam” will wow you in ways the CD resolution file won’t. While this is the Valentines’ most ambitious project yet, it’s not the couple’s finest (I’d reserve that for the Clare Teal Ella record) but neither is it a failure—not even a “glorious failure”. If you cut this one a bit of slack I think you’ll enjoy it because it does take you into AIR studios that day in ways no digital recording can and the music is well-performed and “user friendly” especially if classical music isn’t your “thing”. And keep in mind it was rehearsed, mixed and cut to lacquer all in a single day! **************************************************************************************************

Mike Valentine, Gründer und Chef-Produzent von Chasing The Dragon, ist hauptamtlich Kameramann - sein scharfes Auge und seinen Sinn für Ästhetik kann man in mehr als neunzig Kinofilmen, darunter einige James-Bond-Episoden, bewundern. Dennoch ist sein 2012 gegründetes Label mittlerweile deutlich mehr als nur ein Hobby des leidenschaftlichen Audiophilen. Zuerst machte Chasing The Dragon mit einer Reihe binauraler Kunstkopf-Aufnahmen aus dem Bereich der klassischen Musik von sich reden, dann kamen auch die ersten Direktschnitt-Alben, zumeist aus dem Jazz-Bereich. Mit Eleanor McEvoy konnte Valentine nun erstmals eine namhafte Künstlerin aus dem Folk-Pop-Bereich gewinnen, und die Zusammenarbeit übertrifft alle Erwartungen. Die Aufnahmen fanden im Mai 2018 in den Air Studios London statt, ein mit analogem Aufnahme-Equipment auf höchstem Niveau ausgestattetes Studio, das Beatles-Produzent George Martin in eine alte Kirche bauen ließ. Das alte Gemäuer bietet eine fantastische organische Akustik, die mit nur wenigen architektonischen Eingriffen optimiert wurde. Hier also trat Eleanor McEvoy vor die Mikrofone, begleitet nur von ihrer eigenen Gitarre und dem facettenreichen Klavierspiel von Damon Butcher, der den meisten vermutlich als langjähriger Arrangeur und Keyboarder für The Beautiful South ein Begriff ist. Eine Direktschnitt-Aufnahme verzeiht keine Fehler, für die Dauer einer kompletten LP-Seite muss jeder Ton sitzen, sonst ist das Vinyl ruiniert. Dennoch hat es sich die 52-Jährige nicht einfach gemacht, denn sie präsentiert hier nicht etwa ein Sammelsurium aus routinierten alten Songs, sondern gruppiert einige neue Songs geschickt um Altbekanntes, extra arrangierte Traditionals und Cover-Songs, das wenigste davon gibt es bisher schon auf Alben von ihr zu hören, und vor allem nicht in dieser auf das notwendigste heruntergebrochenen Version. McEvoys poetische und doch kantige Songs, die so schwindelfrei zwischen keltischer Folklore und Indie-Rock balancieren, werden hier zu echten Kleinodien, denn was McEvoy und Butcher mit nur akustischer bzw. elektrischer Gitarre und Flügel bzw. E-Piano an Sound-Welten erzeugen können, ist absolut verblüffend. Vom harten Blues („The Way You Wear Your Troubles“) bis zum flirrenden Latin-Sound („Not Quite Love“) reicht das Spektrum, und im irischen Traditional „Carolan's Concerto“ kann man die studierte Violinistin McEvoy sogar einmal mit der Geige hören. Aufgenommen ist all das natürlich rein analog, ohne Nachbearbeitung, Schnitte oder Overdubbing - der Direktschnitt macht es gar nicht anders möglich. Zum Einsatz kamen Röhrenmikrofone von Gefell, AKG und Flea, sowie eine Neumann VMS 80 Schneidemaschine. Toningenieur Jake Jackson und Mastering-Ingenieur John Webber haben hier ganze Arbeit geleistet; jedes Detail dieser filigranen Musik ist perfekt und glasklar durchhörbar, das ursprüngliche Signal wird beim Direktschnitt so wenig wie irgend möglich verfälscht, und das Resultat ist - der pure Genuss! As a foil for the project, Eleanor is accompanied on all 10 tracks by pianist Damon Butcher (ex-Beautiful South) who featured on her last studio album The Thomas Moore Project (2017). He gets equal billing (on the rear sleeve, at least) while Eleanor sings and selectively plays acoustic and electric guitars, piano and violin. As with Alone and Naked Music, there’s a limited amount of fresh song writing – a handful of new songs – ‘The Spanish Word For Heart Is Corazon’, ‘Gimme Some Wine’ and ‘Pink Champagne’ – all of which were road tested on her last UK tour, and ‘Fragile Wishes’, and ‘If You Had A Heart’ (a co-write with J(ennifer?) Kimball and Henry Priestman (of The Christians renown). Two traditional arrangements – ‘The Meeting Of The Waters’ and ‘Carolan’s Concerto’, and a cover of The Pointer Sisters 1981 hit ‘Slow Hand’ (a highlight on her last tour), alongside two re-workings ‘The Way You Wear Your Troubles’ (from Out There (2006)) and ‘Not Quite Love’ (from her eponymous 1993 debut) complete the set. As for warts, well, Eleanor’s performance is, true to form, blemish free and it’s clear from the first listen why her current ‘go to’ keyboard player was brought along for the ‘gig’ – the warmth and depth of his grand piano is the perfect foil for her rich vocals and for exploiting the recording environment. And sonically, you simply can’t complain (although there are a couple of ambient gremlins from switching instruments that wouldn’t ‘normally’ happen, or would have been removed in post-production). I’m not sure, vocally, that she’s ever sounded better on record. Particularly impressive, for a ‘one take’, to say nothing of the bravery of the finger clicks in the fade of ‘Pink Champagne’ where sweaty palms could have been disastrous. It’s a recording that benefits a generous twist of the volume knob in order to fully appreciate the subtleties of the performance, highlights including the juxtaposition of the grand and electric pianos on ‘The Meeting Of The Waters’, the fresh lease of life given to the mildly tijuana style arrangement of ‘Not Quite Love’, the sixties imbibed delicacy of ‘If You Had A Heart’, and the ‘in the room’ vibrancy of the semi classical violin on ‘Carolan’s Concerto’. Elsewhere, it’s ‘business as normal’ in terms of quality control, although personally I thought the guitar and piano parts a little at odds on the revisiting of ‘The Way You Wear Your Troubles’, and I’d like to have heard ‘Slow Hand’ given a more sparse arrangement and taken down a notch or two in tempo. But I’m splitting hairs here. A somewhat mysterious release – only Chasing The Dragon’s sixth direct cut recording (the others being largely classical) – the CD jewel case spine simply shows ‘Forgotten Dreams / Chasing The Dragon) which, combined with a virtual silence on Eleanor’s website and social media streams, suggests Forgotten Dreams is more of an exercise – from both sides of the desk – to achieve an audiophile ‘personal best’, as opposed to – for now, at least – an ‘official’ addition to Eleanor’s discography. From a songwriting perspective, Forgotten Dreams perhaps reflects the fact that her days of edginess and angst are long passed, and an ‘ordinary’ studio rendition of the set would probably only garner 3 stars. But for the quality of the recording, and the ‘bottle’ to do it without a ‘safety net’ Forgotten Dreams merits 4. Hier wiederum setzt Valentine immer wieder zu Recht auf den Live-Konzert-Mitschnitt, denn anders als im Pop-/Rock-Bereich mit seiner aufwändigen Mikrofonierung, Bühnenbeschallung und Abmischung wird man in der Klassik durch einen Live-Mitschnitt als Ton-Ingenieur nicht vor zusätzliche Probleme gestelllt. Eher im Gegenteil: ein Konzertsaal mit guter Akustik, wenige aber hochqualitative Mikrofone, und natürlich Spieler, die in der Lage sind, im Konzert die gleiche (oder sogar noch eine bessere) Leistung abzuliefern als im Studio - das sind alle Zutaten, die man für eine gute Klassik-Platte braucht. Mit zwei Platten beginnt Chasing The Dragon in diesem Jahr eine vielversprechende Reihe mit dem Titel „Beethoven Live Series“. Es sind diese Beethovens 5. Symphonie und sein, am gleichen Konzertabend in London mitgeschnittenes, 5. Klavierkonzert, das wir Ihnen hier ganz besonders ans Herz legen möchten. Beethovens 5. Klavierkonzert in Es-Dur, sein letztes, stammt aus der produktivsten Phase des Komponisten, aus dem Jahr 1811. Anders als die vorhergehenden Klavierkonzerte schrieb es Beethoven nicht für sich selbst als Solisten (seine fortschreitende Taubheit machte seiner Konzerttätigkeit ein Ende), sondern für seinen Schüler und begeisterten Mäzen, Erzherzog Rudolph von Österreich. So erleben wir Beethoven, den virtuosen Meister, der Komposition für Klavier auf ein völlig neues und teilweise seiner Zeit weit vorausweisendes Niveau gebracht hatte, hier in einer ungewöhnlichen Rolle: weniger als Erforscher pianistischer Technik, dafür mehr als großen Experimentierer mit Form und Harmonik - in dieser Hinsicht verweist das 5. Klavierkonzert schon ein wenig aufs Beethovens Spätwerk. Dennoch hat es der Solo-Part dieses Konzerts durchaus auch rein spieltechnisch in sich (Erzherzog Rudolph, der die Uraufführung spielte, muss ein mehr als nur begabter Schüler gewesen sein). Diesem vollends gewachsen zeigt sich in der vorliegenden Aufnahme der britische Pianist John Lenehan. Gemeinsam mit dem renommierten Londoner Locrian Ensemble unter der Leitung von Rimma Sushanskaya entlockt Lenehan dem Konzert eine leichtfüßige Eleganz, die man in den notorisch stürmischen Beethoven-Werken sonst selten hört, die aber zu diesem charmanten, einfühlsamen und verspielten Werk bestens passt. Lenehan, dessen Repertoire von zeitgenössischer Musik bis zu Stummfilm-Begleitung reicht, findet im Locrian Ensemble mit seiner frischen und unverstellten Spielweise perfekte Partner. Die Aufnahme entstand in der Londoner Kirche St. Martin In The Fields (Klassikfreunden durch viele Aufnahmen der dort beheimateten Academy ein Begriff) im Rahmen eines der dort regelmäßig stattfindenden Konzerte des Locrian Ensemble. Beethoven-Freunde kommen derzeit beim britischen Label Chasing The Dragon voll auf ihre Kosten: Erst dieses Jahr startete die sympathische Truppe um den unkonventionellen Label-Chef Mike Valentine ihre „Beethoven Live Series“ (von der man sich sicher auch im kommenden Beethoven-Jahr 2020 noch einiges erwarten darf), und diese führte gleich zu einer weiteren wundervollen Kooperation, denn Pianist John Lenehan, der für die Live Series schon Beethovens 5. Klavierkonzert im Live-Mitschnitt einspielte, konnte auch gleich für eine Direct-to-Disc-Aufnahme zweier der bekanntesten Klaviersonaten des Meisters verpflichtet werden. Die beiden Werke, die hier im Direktschnitt-Verfahren auf Vinyl gebannt wurden, kann man wohl getrost als Evergreens oder Greatest Hits bezeichnen: Die Sonate „Pathetique“ op. 13, und die „Mondschein“-Sonate, op. 27, Nr. 2. Beide Werke zeigen noch den stürmisch-drängenden Beethoven der ersten Wiener Schaffens-Periode, aber auch schon den analytischen Komponisten, den eindringlich persönlichen Stil Suchenden, den alle Formgrenzen Auslotenden, und vor allem den virtuosen Pianisten, der die Idiomatik dieses Instruments in seinen Sonaten zur Vollendung brachte. Der Brite John Lenehan, Jahrgang 1958, ist musikalisch genau die Art von Freigeist, mit denen sich Mike Valentine in seinen Projekten am liebsten umgibt: Seine Hintergründe reichen von Ragtime bis Filmmusik, von Kammermusik bis Pop, und neben seiner solistischen Tätigkeit ist er auch ein gesuchter Komponist und Arrangeur. Seine Interpretation der beiden hier eingespielten Sonaten besticht vor allem durch ihre unangestrengte Lockerheit. Damit soll nicht gemeint sein, dass Lenehan den emotionalen Tiefen und Höhen dieser beiden wuchtigen Werke nicht gerecht würde, ganz im Gegenteil! Doch sein Spiel scheint auf angenehme Weise unbeeindruckt von der olympischen Größe der Sonaten. Frisch und direkt stürzt er sich auf den stürmischen Beginn der Pathetique, bestechend zart und schlicht entdeckt er das berühmte kantable Thema des ersten Satzes der „Mondschein“-Sonate. Das macht auch eingefleischten Beethoven-Kennern große Freude, und vom speziellen Druck, den eine Direktschnitt-Aufnahme (die ja keinerlei nachträgliche Korrekturen oder Schnitte erlaubt) bietet, ist hier nichts zu spüren. Vielmehr glaubt man sich in gänzlich entspannter, familiärer und gerade deswegen besonders intensiver Atmosphäre. Diese Atmosphäre entstand in den legendären von Beatles-Produzent George Martin gegründeten Air Studios in London, die sich im Inneren einer alten Kirche befinden. Der wundervolle Bösendorfer-Flügel wurde exzellent mikrofoniert, und die Aufnahme ist klanglich über jeden Zweifel erhaben. Mike Valentine entschuldigt sich zwar im Labeltext für ein paar nicht wegzukriegende Pedal-Geräusche, unserer Ansicht nach tragen sie hier nur noch mehr zur Authentizität und unmittelbaren Greifbarkeit dieser tollen Schallplatte bei. Rom wurde nicht an einem Tag erbaut - ganz anders als bei der ewigen Stadt verhält es sich allerdings mit dem nun erschienenen Album des Quentin Collins All Star Quintet. Dieses wurde nicht nur an einem Tag eingespielt und auf Vinyl geschnitten, auch die Proben für die Aufnahmen für dieses fanden schon am selbigen Tag statt. Besagt das eingangs wiedergegebene Sprichwort, dass gut Ding Weile haben will, so zeigt „A Day In The Life“ deutlich, dass gut Ding nicht immer Weile zu haben braucht. Denn „gut“ ist für das Album der Combo um den englischen Trompeter Quentin Collins ein noch viel zu bescheidenes Prädikat. Collins, der hierzulande leider längst nicht die Popularität genießt wie auf der Insel, ist ein Vollblutjazzer, der bereits mit so unterschiedlichen Musikern wie Roy Ayers, Alicia Keys, Mulato Astatke, Gregory Porter oder Mark Ronson arbeitete und der mit seinem Quartett acht Jahre lang im legendären Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club in London die Hausband stellte. Sein gefeiertes Debüt „If Not Now, Then When?“ erschien 2007, nun folgt sein zweites Album als Leader mit sechs Stücken, darunter vier eigene - drei aus der Feder Collins, eines aus der des Pianisten Jason Rebello - sowie ein Hancock-Klassiker („Oliliqui Valley“) und eines vom südafrikanischen Multiinstrumentalisten Bhekemuzi Mseleku („Angola“). Es ist beinahe müßig zu erwähnen, dass sich Collins Quintett technisch auf allerhöchstem Niveau befindet, besonders Perkussionist Miles Bould lässt den Hörer häufig staunend zurück. Schnitt direkt auf Vinyl innerhalb eines einzigen Tages durch Mike Valentine, Eigentümer von Chasing The Dragon Records, gemastert über einen Stax-Kopfhörer. rr Das Direktschnitt-Verfahren: Im Direktschnitt-Verfahren aufgenommene Alben sind "Live"-Darbietungen. Eine LP-Seite (und nicht einzelne Stücke) wird hier direkt vom Mikrophon von einer Schneidemaschine auf Lack- oder Kupferfolie geschnitten, welche später als Formvorlage für die LP dient. Die Signalwege sind somit denkbar kurz, eine Möglichkeit der Nachbearbeitung besteht allerdings nicht. So ist die Pause zwischen zwei Stücken auf der LP, die tatsächliche Pause der Musiker während der Einspielung. Direktschnitt-Aufnahmen sind für Audiophile ein Traum und von Musikern gefürchtet. Daß einer der Stars der aktuellen britischen Szene nun in direktem Anschluß auf Mike Valentines HQ-Label zu finden ist, ist mal wieder einer der Zufälle, die für Valentine so typisch sind: Er äußerte den Wunsch, eine Jazz-Combo aufzunehmen, worauf ihm sein Mastering-Ingenieur John Webber erzählte, einer der besten Leute derzeit wohne nur ein paar Straßen weiter. Natürlich verlor Valentine keine Zeit, und Dank seinem Überzeugungstalent hatte er Collins mit vier Kollegen ein paar Wochen später im Studio stehen. Im Gegensatz zu "Road Warrior" ist er hier der einzige Bläser, aber mit Jason Rebello (der u.a. längere Zeit in den Bands von Sting und Jeff Beck tätig war) ist ein weiterer hochkarätiger Solist dabei! Joe Sanders am Bass, Perkussionist Miles Bould und John McLaughlins Drummer Gary Husband stellen die Rhythmusgruppe. Sein gefeiertes Debüt »If Not Now, Then When?« erschien 2007, nun folgt sein zweites Album als Leader mit sechs Stücken, darunter vier eigene - drei aus der Feder Collins, eines aus der des Pianisten Jason Rebello - sowie einem Hancock-Klassiker (»Oliliqui Valley«) und eines vom südafrikanischen Multiinstrumentalisten Bhekemuzi Mseleku (»Angola«).
