"Cans And Brahms" is an adaptation by Rick Wakeman on which he plays electric piano taking the part of the strings, grand piano taking the part of the woodwind, organ taking the brass, electric harpsichord taking reeds, and synthesizer taking contra bassoon. "We Have Heaven" is a personal idea by Jon Anderson in which he sings all the vocal parts. "Five Per Cent For Nothing" is a sixteen bar tune by Bill Bruford, played twice by the Group, and taken directly from the percussion line. In Chris Squire's "The Fish", each riff, rhythm, and melody is produced by using the different sounds of the bass guitar. Der Grund: Die Band brauchte ein Album, um die immensen Kosten für das Equipment ihres neuen Keyboarders Rick Wakeman abzubezahlen; und wenn dieses Werk nicht funktioniert hätte, wär's das wohl gewesen mit der Karriere der dann erfolgreichsten Prog-Band aller Zeiten. Doch trotz der Eile wußte die nun wahrlich bemerkenswert besetze Band (Jon Aderson, Bill Bruford, Chris Squire und Wakeman) genau, was sie tat – und konnte ihr perfektionistisches Art-Rock-Konzept hier auf den Punkt bringen. Top Ten-Positionen in England und den USA waren die Folge (wovon andere genrebegründende Bands zu diesem Zeitpunkt nur träumen konnten). Wir haben eine gute und eine schlechte Nachricht. Zuerst die schlechte: Die 50-Jahre Jubiläums-Edition „Pearl“ der Jahrhundert-Sängerin Janis Joplin ist bei MFSL (Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab) bereits ausverkauft. Die gute Nachricht ist, dass wir uns aus USA einige Boxen sichern konnten. Die One-Step-Ultradisc-Vinyl-Doppel-LP ist auf 10.000 Stück limitiert und nummeriert. Das Wichtigste aber gleich vorweg: So gut hat das Album definitiv noch nie geklungen. Gemastert wurde es von den Original-Master-Tapes mit dem Mobile Fidelitys One-Step-Prozess. Gepresst wurde auf Mofi (Mobile Fidelity) Supervinyl. Die LPs sind jeweils 180 Gramm schwer und drehen in 45rpm. „Pearl“ ist Joplins zweites Soloalbum. 1968 verließ sie Big Brother and the Holding Company. Im Juni 1969 nahm sie ihr erstes Soloalbum „I Got Dem Ol Kozmic Blues Again Mama!“ auf. Der Nachfolger wurde zwischen September und Oktober 1970 in Hollywood eingespielt. Begleitet wurde Joplin dabei im Studio von der Full Tilt Boogie Band. Dabei fand sie in John Till (Gitarre, Begleitgesang), Brad Campbell (Bass, Begleitgesang), Clark Pierson (Schlagzeug, Begleitgesang), Ken Pearson (Orgel, Begleitgesang), Richard Bell (Piano, Begleitgesang), Sandra Crouch (Tamburin), Bobbye Hall (Congas, Bongos), Vince Mitchell (Begleitgesang), Phil Badella (Begleitgesang), John Cooke (Begleitgesang) und Bobby Womack (Akustische Gitarre) kongeniale Mitmusiker. Leider konnte Joplin die Veröffentlichung des Werkes nicht mehr selber miterleben, da sie am 4. Oktober 1970 an einer Überdosis Heroin verstarb. Drei Monate später erschien es bei Columbia Records. In den amerikanischen Albumcharts kletterte die LP auf Platz 1, in Deutschland auf Platz 3 und in England auf Platz 20. Eröffnet wird die Schallplatte mit der Eigenkomposition „Move Over“. Joplins Stimme erklingt hier kraftvoll im Zusammenklang mit dem harten Beat des Schlagzeugs. Die unisono dazu gespielte E-Gitarre verleiht dem Lied eine besondere Intensität. Danach kommt „Cry Baby“. Ganz in der Tradition der großen Soul-Ladies singt Joplin diesen Song aus der Mitte ihres Herzens. „A Woman Left Lonely“ ist ein Blues, der tief unter die Haut geht. Gerade dieses Lied offenbart, über welch unfassbare Range ihre Stimme verfügt. Die Strahlkraft und und die Farbigkeit ihrer Gesangsstimme sind wahrhaft aussergewöhnlich. Dies und das Zusammenspiel von Orgel und Piano werden perfekt durch die hochqualitative Pressung abgebildet. Aber auch in musikalischer Hinsicht ist „Still Crazy After All These Years“ von Paul Simon ein sehr wichtiger musikhistorischer Beitrag. Es ist das erste Album, das Paul Simon nach der Scheidung von seiner Frau veröffentlicht hat. Die Intensität dieser Zeit ist auch in den Kompositionen spür- und fühlbar. Diese Emotionalität macht dieses Werk besonders wertvoll. Dabei kommt aber neben Melancholie und Wehmut der Humor nicht zu kurz. Der Titeltrack ist gleichzeitig der Opener der Scheibe. Wunderschön mit welchem Gefühl Pianist Barry Beckett den Song einleitet. Tiefgehend die Stimme Paul Simon, die tief aus Seele und Herz kommt. Ein intensiveres Saxophon-Solo als das, was Michael Brecker hier intoniert, kann man sich zu diesem Stück kaum vorstellen. Ein weiterer Welthit ist „50 Ways To Leave Your Lover“. Drummer Steve Gadd leitet den Song mit einem raffinierten Rhythmus ein. Klasse der unerwartete Rhythmuswechsel, der den Song dann vorwärts treibt. Das kraftvoll-großstädtische Gitarrenspiel von John Tropea verleiht dem Song enorme Würze. Die immer wiederkehrenden dynamischen Rhythmuswechsel sind ein wahres Arrangement-Highlight. Übrigens wurde der Song mit dem Titel „50 Tips Ihn Zu Verlassen“ von Ulla Meinecke auf deutsch sehr gekonnt neu interpretiert. „My Little Town“ wurde von Art Garfunkel arrangiert. Wie das? Ja, seit 1970, dem Trennungsjahr des legendären Duos, standen Simon und Garfunkel wieder gemeinsam im Studio. Nicht nur das macht diesen Song so besonders. Barry Becker leitet den Song mit einem herrlich gefühlvoll gespielten und klingenden Piano ein. Wunderschön auch der feine Klang der Akustikgitarre. Die Vereinigung der Beiden an der vokalen Mikrophonie ist schon wirklich magisch. Diese zwei Stimmen harmonieren mehr als kongenial zusammen. Das Arrangement ist klasse. Es ist spannend und fesselnd, als Hörer dabei zu sein, wie sich der Song immer mehr steigert. Ganz großes Hör-Kino. Ein weiterer Anspieltipp ist „Night Game“. Dieser Song strahlt so viel analoge Wärme aus. Das ist schon ergreifend. Simons gezupfte E-Gitarre verschmilzt unendlich harmonisch mit seiner Gesangsstimme. Ein musikalisch ganz hell leuchtendes Glanzlicht ist das Mundharmonika-Solo von Toots Thielemans. Hier geht die Sonne am Klanghimmel wahrlich auf. Das betrifft sowohl die exquisite Aufmachung, als auch den finalen highendigen audiophilen Klang. Dabei klang die Erstveröffentlichung schon hervorragend. Doch diese MoFi-Ultradisc-One-Step-Edition setzt dem Ganzen jedoch die Krone auf. Die LP erscheint hier nun auf zwei Schallplatten verteilt, die in speziellem Super-High-Definition-Vinyl gepresst sind. Aufgenommen wurde das Werk in Bray, District Windsor, Berkshire, England, im Rahmen der MTV Unplugged Serie. Die auf 10.000 Exemplare limitierte Edition ist fortlaufend in goldenem Prägedruck nummeriert. Die beiden LPs drehen dabei 45rpm. Gemastert wurde das Ganze von Krieg Wunderlich bei Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab, Sebastopol, Kalifornien, USA, auf dem Gain-2-Ultra-Analog-System. Übrigens ist die Box schon ausverkauft. Natürlich haben wir uns rechtzeitig Exemplare direkt aus USA gesichert. Und um es gleich zu sagen: das MÜSSEN Sie hören! Sie werden Ihre wahre Hörfreude daran haben. Die Details der Aufnahme sind nochmals besser fühl- und spürbar. Durch das aufwändige Pressverfahren (es werden auch nur ca. 500 LPs pro Stamper gepresst) laufen die LPs sehr ruhig und völlig frei von Nebengeräuschen. Claptons Stimme ist megapräsent. Man kann ihn förmlich auch atmen hören. Der Aufnahmeraum wird völlig authentisch wiedergegeben. Man hört sein Fußstapfen, sein Schlagen auf den Gitarrenkorpus oder wenn er die Songs einzählt, als würde die am 30. März 1945 in Ripley, Borough of Guildford, England, geborene Gitarrenlegende Eric Patrick Clapton direkt vor einem sitzen. Die Balance ist herausragend. Genauso verhält es sich mit der Dynamik. Das kann man gerade beim Percussionspiel von Ray Cooper nachempfinden. Der Bass von Nathan East drückt souverän und mit enormer Tiefe. Kongenial dazu passt das Schlagzeug von Steve Ferrone, das sehr räumlich klingt. Das kann man bei "Signe" herrlich spüren. Mit welcher Leichtigkeit er sich hier mit seiner Nylon-String-Guitar durch den Song spielt. ist einzigartig. Frenetischer, gut abgebildeter Applaus belohnt ihn dafür. "Before You Accuse Me" bringt absolutes Blues-Feeling auf die Bühne. Das Handclapping des Publikums ist top realistisch aufgenommen und wird ebenso wiedergegeben. Bei seinem Solo auf seiner Martin-Steelstring-Western-Gitarre wird jede noch so kleine Nuance hörbar. Wie gut die LPs klingen können, kann man auch bei dem tief emotionalen "Tears In Heaven" oder dem Derek And The Dominos Klassiker "Layla" erleben. Voller Dynamik kommt "Hey, Hey", das einen nicht mehr still sitzen lässt. Die Edel-Edition kommt in einer sehr wertigen Box mit Goldschrift und verkleinerten Original-Cover-Bild. Man könnte sagen es ist eines der ersten Unplugged-Vinyl-Recordings. Definitiv ist es ein akustisches Blues-Meisterwerk. Gitarrist, Sänger und Father of The Blues Muddy Waters, der als McKinley Morganfield geboren wurde, hat mit Buddy Guy (Gitarre), Willie Dixon (Kontrabass) und Clifton James (Schlagzeug) genau die richtigen Musiker mit an Bord.
