The Rolling Stones’ landmark 1968 album Beggars Banquet has been released in a new 50th Anniversary Edition by ABKCO Records in multiple formats, including vinyl and CD. The limited edition vinyl format has a gatefold jacket with a bonus 12” of the album’s celebrated opening track, ‘Sympathy For the Devil,’ in mono. That disc is cut at 45rpm and backed with an etching of the original “toilet” cover. Also in the package is a replica of the rare Japanese bonus flexi disc, which contains a telephone interview with Mick Jagger from 1968, and a download code for the album plus interview. Newly mastered by Grammy-winning engineer Bob Ludwig, the disc’s lacquers were cut at Abbey Road and it’s pressed on 180g vinyl. Beggars Banquet Stones Press PhotoThe telephone interview that Mick Jagger did with a staffer from the Stones’ Japanese label King Records had a title that translated to “’Hello, This Is Mick Jagger!’ LONDON to TOKYO April 17, 1968.” It is restored with its original sleeve art in the limited edition vinyl package, marking the first time this rarity has been available outside Japan. During the conversation, which took place while the band were recording the new album, Jagger is asked “What do you think is the future direction of your music?” He replies: “Sideways.” Beggars Banquet, originally released on 6 December 1968, was the group’s last album to be released during Brian Jones’ lifetime and their first with producer Jimmy Miller. As well as ‘Sympathy For The Devil,’ it featured such key tracks as the single ‘Street Fighting Man,’ ‘No Expectations’ and ‘Factory Girl.’ Beggars Banquet“The Rolling Stones have returned, and they are bringing back rock and roll with them,” wrote Rolling Stone founder and editor Jann Wenner in the 10 August 1968 issue of the magazine. In all aspects it is a great album; great Rolling Stones’ material and performance; a great rock and roll album, without pretense, an achievement of significance in both lyrics and music.” Wenner also put Mick on the cover of that issue, with a boastful headline, “The Stones Make the Great Comeback of Their Career.” Long after its original release, legendary rock journalist and author Ben Fong-Torres heralded Beggars Banquet as “an album flush with masterful and growling instant classics” that “responds more to the chaos of ’68 and to themselves than to any fellow artists . . . the mood is one of dissolution and resignation, in the guise of a voice of ambivalent authority.” As Fong-Torres refers to, “Street Fighting Man,” the most politically charged Stones song of all time, was partially inspired by Mick Jagger’s first-hand experience at an anti-war rally at the U.S. embassy in London where he saw activist Tariq Ali speak. Simultaneously, student protests in Paris were taking place, leading to a massive uprising that May in which almost a quarter of the nation participated in strikes and demonstrations. Jagger told Rolling Stone in 1997, “It was a very strange time in France. But not only in France but also in America, because of the Vietnam War and these endless disruptions . . . I thought it was a very good thing at the time. There was all this violence going on. I mean, they almost toppled the government in France . . .” February 1969 marked the album’s second single, “Sympathy for the Devil” written mainly by Jagger after Marianne Faithfull gave him a copy of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel The Master and Margarita. The story follows the devil as he visits Stalin-era Soviet Union. Originally intended to be played in a folk style, Richards suggested changing the tempo and adding percussion, turning the rhythm into a samba. The evolution of this incredible song was captured in the Jean-Luc Godard film Sympathy For The Devil aka ONE PLUS ONE. The film has recently been carefully restored in 4K and is available October 5th as a BluRay, DVD and download in North America. With the 1969 release of Beggars Banquet in Japan, the album included a 7″ flexi disc capturing a telephone interview between Mick Jagger and a representative of the King Records in Tokyo, the distributor of London Records in Japan. The rare artifact’s title translated to “’Hello, This Is Mick Jagger!’ LONDON to TOKYO April 17, 1968” has been restored and reissued on flexi disc with identical sleeve art. A limited run will be included in the 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Vinyl package, worldwide, making it available for the first time outside Japan. A cunning moment in the exchange captured over the telephone, halfway around the world, while the band was busy recording the yet-unnamed album Beggars Banquet in Olympic Sound Studios, Jagger was asked “What do you think is the future direction of your music?” And with no hesitation, he responded “Sideways.” The original intended album cover art for Beggars Banquet was initially rejected both by London Records, their U.S. label as well as Decca, their UK label. The Michael Vosse photograph of a vandalized restroom wall (Jagger and Richards provided the graffiti, the restroom was inside a Porsche dealership) was deemed offensive, possibly because the top of an open toilet is captured in the shot. The replacement cover was simply the band name and album title written in the style of a wedding invitation, and remained that way for several years before the intended bathroom photo art was no longer perceived as offensive, and finally gained its rightful place on the cover. Beggars Banquet (50th Anniversary Edition) pays tribute to both, as the package will be housed with the Vosse image, with an overwrap of the “inoffensive” wedding invitation art. The limited edition vinyl package will come in gatefold jacket, with a bonus 12” of their iconic single “Sympathy for the Devil” in Mono cut at 45rpm, backed with an etching of the original ‘toilet’ cover. Also included is a replica of the rare Japanese bonus flexi disc containing a phone interview with Mick Jagger from 1968, and a download code for the album plus interview. The landmark album has been newly mastered by Grammy Award® winning engineer Bob Ludwig, lacquers cut at Abbey Road and pressed at RTI in California on 180g. ******************************************************************************************

"Under My Thumb" federt unnachahmlich. Das Vibrafon schwebt durch den Raum. Die Akustik-Gitarre bei "Lady Jane" entfaltet eine wundersame Eindringlichkeit und Tiefe. Die Bässe entstammen Poseidons Werkstatt. Die Höhen sind herrlich crisp. Die Mitten sind fett und raumfüllend. Da passt alles. Fast meint man, man hört die Stones-Scheiben komplett neu. Man kann auf spannende abendfüllende Entdeckungsreisen gehen. Die Mono-Aufnahmen schieben und drücken, dass es pure Freude ist. Das schafft keine Stereo-Einspielung. Übrigens gibt es von einigen Alben wie z. B. "Out Of Our Heads" oder "Aftermath" sowohl die US- als auch die UK-Version. Mit "Stray Cats" liegt noch eine Bonus-Doppel-LP bei, auf der Single- und E.P.-Tracks enthalten sind, die es auf den Original-Alben nicht gibt, darunter solche Klassiker wie "Jumping Jack Flash" oder "Honky Tonk Woman". Hören Sie sich das Riff von "Jumping Jack Flash" an, wie frisch und donnernd es aus Keith Richards Röhren-Amp brettert. "The Rolling Stones in Mono" wurde von Bob Ludwig bei Gateway Mastering gemastert, die Lacquers von Alex Wharton und Sean Mageein in den Abbey Road Studios geschnitten. Im Juni 2008 starb Esbjörn Svensson bei einem Tauchunfall, so ist das kurz zuvor in Sydney aufgenommene Album „Leucocyte“ sein Vermächtnis für die Jazzwelt. Und wie der Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik (Bestenliste 4/2008) deutlich macht, bietet es Herausragendes, das einmal mehr die Qualitäten des E.S.T. deutlich werden lässt. „Leucocyte“ verbindet auf innovative Weise modernen Jazz mit Rock und Elektronik, Avantgarde und Psychedelic. Stattdessen zwölf überwiegend selten gehörte, aber um nichts weniger großartige Songs dieses immer wieder beeindruckenden Blues-Stilisten, wie der eröffnende "Stutterin' Blues" (der u.a. auf Van Morrison einen bleibenden Eindruck hinterlassen haben muß) oder das Instrumental "Misbelieving Baby", bei dem der Argwohn wunderbar in Hookers Gitarrespiel zu hören ist! Die rein analog produzierte Speakers Corner-Ausgabe beeindruckt nicht zuletzt durch Präsenz und Unmittelbarkeit, sowohl die Stimme wie die Gitarre betreffend. True grit! John Lee Hooker bleibt Mysterium und Studienobjekt zugleich. Sieht mancher wie der Autor Jacques Demêtre in dem Mann vom Mississippi den vom musikalischen Gesichtspunkt »rohesten und afrikanischsten aller Bluesinterpreten«, so erstarren andere wie der Rezensent Net Hentoff fassungslos vor der ungefilterten Ausdrucksmacht Hookers, die den »unvorbereiteten Hörer erschrecken könne«. Dass Hookers musikalische Sprache auch ohne das markige ›Boom boom‹ mindestens tief berührt, zeigen die hier aufgereihten Stücke. Jedes einzelne ist für sich ein Rohdiamant, der gewollt ungeschliffen und direkt wahrgenommen werden soll. Gebrochen deklamiert der Sänger über geigender Gitarre und nur durchs Metrum geführt im »Stuttering Blues« seine lallenden Laute. Schleppend und trotzig wird der innerlich vollzogene Abschied textgenau verkündet (»You Lost A Good Man«) und auch ein Song ohne Worte (»Misbelieving Baby«) sinniert fragend im rein instrumentalen Monolog. Bis auf eine Prise Boogie (»Pouring Down Rain«) meidet Hookers Blues jeglichen Schönklang und süße Harmonie. Er bleibt ungeschönt rau, gnadenlos ehrlich, bisweilen unversöhnlich und verneint jeden Gedanken an ein wie auch immer geartetes ›back to the roots‹. Dieser Sound kann nur die Wurzel selbst sein. Hooker transcended the blues scene and became an inspiration (like his fellow blues man Muddy Waters) to future rock and roll stars Don’t Turn Me From Your Door is exquisitely distilled blues by one of the masters. Some, like the author Jacques Demêtre called the musician from Mississippi »the most raw and African of all blues players from a musical point of view«, while the critic Net Hentoff was awestruck by Hooker’s unfiltered power of expression that could scare the pants off a listener taken unawares. The numbers on this LP bear witness to the fact that Hooker’s musical language could stir one’s emotions deeply, even without the meaty 'boom boom'.
