Weitere Details: **************************************************************************************************** Als Frontsängerin der Indie-Rock-Band June Divided kam Melissa Menago in den letzten Jahren zu einigem Erfolg, 2016 veröffentlichte sie bei Chesky ihr Solo-Debüt „Little Crimes“. Mit einer Mischung aus eigenen Songs, neu arrangierten June Divided-Nummern und ausgesuchten Covers (ihre Version von Leonard Cohens „Halleluja“ bringt völlig neue Facetten des Songs zum Glänzen) weiß diese Scheibe zu überzeugen. Aufgenommen wurden die luftig leichten Akustik-Arrangements in einer 130 Jahre alten Kirche in Boston, live, während draußen ein Unwetter niederging. Dank des von Chesky entwickelten Binaural+-Aufnahmesystems wurde nicht nur die Akustik und Räumlichkeit der Aufnahmesituation feinfühlig eingefangen, sondern sogar der Regen, der leise aufs Kirchendach trommelt, ist mitunter im Hintergrund zu hören. Eine ungewöhnliche und stimmungsvolle Platte! ******************************************************************************************** Rezension: Ein sehr starkes Solo-Debüt nahm die bis dato von der Indie-Formation June Divided bekannte Sängerin im Jahre 2016 für das Chesky-Label auf. Instrumentiert nur mit maximal zwei Gitarren und minimaler Percussion, oft aber auch nur mit einer einsamen Ukulele, steht Menagos akzentuierter, aber niemals affektierter Gesang stets im Mittelpunkt. Eigene Stücke wie "Traveler" oder "Smoke Signs" zeigen großes songwriterisches Talent; fast noch beeindruckender aber geraten die Coverversionen: Man war der Ansicht, daß sich aus Standards wie "Falling In Love You" oder "Over The Rainbow" nicht mehr viel Neues gewinnen ließe; Leonard Cohens "Hallelujah" hielt man auch allmählich für ausgereizt. Mengagos geradezu magische Adaptionen zeigen: Großer Irrtum. – Auch in klanglicher Hinsicht ist dies selbst für Chesky-Verhältnisse ein außerordentlicher Höhepunkt: Die Ein-Mikrophon-Aufnahme ist von stupender Dreidimensionalität und transportiert den Hörer direkt in die Bostoner Kirche, in der sie stattfand. Weitere Details: ************************************************************************************************* Es war schon ein spezielles Experiment für Macy Gray: Als die Soul- und R'n'B-Sängerin 2016 ins Studio ging, um „Stripped“ aufzunehmen, war es nicht nur ihr allererstes Jazz-Album, nein: Das „Studio“ war eine alte Kirche, die Band bestand nur aus drei Mann (Gitarre, Bass und Schlagzeug), und alles wurde „live“ mit nur einem einzigen Binaural-Mikrofon aufgenommen. Eine besondere Herausforderung, die Miss Gray aber mit Souveränität und emotionaler Tiefe meistert. Spannend dabei ist vor allem, dass die wenigsten Songs dieser ungemein jazzigen Platte eigentlich Jazz-Songs sind: Metallicas „Nothing Else Matters“ findet sich hier genau so wie Bob Marleys „Redemption Song“, und natürlich auch Macy Grays eigener größter Hit „I Try“, wie Sie ihn noch nie gehört haben. Ein gelungenes Album, das völlig zu Recht auf Platz 3 der Jazz-Charts landete. ************************************************************************************************ Rezension: Um die Jahrtausendwende zählte Macy Gray zur Speerspitze eines erneuerten, authentischern R'n'B-Ansatzes. Ein Fan von R&B-Sternchen Macy Gray und ihrer wunderbar rauchigen Stimme bin ich seit dem ersten Album. Leider präsentierte die Ex-Backup-Sängerin der Black Eyed Peas meistens Songs, die ihr großes Können widerspiegelten – mich aber emotional nie wirklich überzeugten. Parallel spielte sie in TV-Serien, in Filmen – zeigte, dass sie auch auf mehreren Hochzeiten tanzen kann. Das war ebenfalls gediegenes Kunsthandwerk, aber immer noch nichts, was einen vom Hocker haut. Mit “Stripped” ist es nun anders: Ich bin schwer begeistert! Musik, die mich eiskalt erwischt, mitreißt und auch Wochen nach dem Erstkontakt immer wieder aus meinen Boxen flutet. Das Album ist bluesiger, jazziger als die letzten und drückt Pop-Elemente ganz weit in den Hintergrund. Hat sich die mittlerweile 39-jährige Grammy-Preisträgerin mit dem kometenhaften Aufstieg endlich selbst gefunden? Ist sie in der richtigen Umlaufbahn am Musikhimmel angekommen? Kann man so sagen. Obwohl sie auf ihrem neunten Studioalbum sogar alte Hits von sich selbst recycelt und auf Coverversionen von Bob Marley oder Metallica zurückgreift, klingt hier alles ganz frisch, neu, intensiv – und vor allem jazzig! Angeblich hat Macy Gray das Album in zwei Tagen mit einem Mikro und ganz wenigen Overdubs im One-Track-Verfahren in einer Brookliner Kirche eingespielt: Wenn das stimmt, hat sich diese archaische Attitüde (vulgo Retro-Marotte) megamäßig ausgezahlt. Im Interview verriet die in Ohio geborene Sängerin, die mittlerweile sogar eine Akademie gegründet hat, sie sei immer Frank-Sinatra-, Nat-“King”-Cole- , Nancy-Wilson- und Nina-Simone–Fan gewesen. Bislang hatte sie das aber geschickt versteckt! Dass sie das Singen als Kind und Teenager durch das Hören von alten Jazzplatten gelernt habe, will man gerne glauben: An Billie Holiday hat ihre Stimme schon viele Rezensenten erinnert. Schon der bluesige Opener “Annabelle”, zeigt programmatisch, wo es lang geht: Eine Art gezähmter Rauheit, die sich nicht nur in Grays Stimme, sondern auch in den Gitarrenlicks niederschlägt und immer wieder harmonische Spannung aufblitzen lässt. Macy Gray - Stripped (Cover)“Sweet Baby”, das zweite Stück, überzeugt mehr durch hingetupfte Gitarrenakkorde und ein im Hintergrund irrlichterndes Trompetensolo als durch den Gesang – wirkt aber überzeugend hingerotzt. Einer meiner Favoriten ist Song Nummer vier: “Slowly”. Fast anrührend klingt dieses kleine unscheinbare Stückchen Musik, das perfekt soulpoppig ‘rüberkommt – wie eine Fingerübung mit filigranen, kleinen Miniaturen, die bei jedem Hören wieder neues entdecken lassen. Auch “First Time” – aus der Abteilung Lovesongs über große Probleme, die wir nie hatten (“Give me one more chance for the first time” Geht das überhaupt?) – klingt mit seiner hingehaucht gequälten Schmalzigkeit wie ein echtes musikalisches Kleinod. Der letzte Song “Lucy” (wie der Opener ein Frauenname) ist ein richtiger Abräumer. Im Hintergrund zirkulieren verhaltene Gitarrenakkorde, die sich immer wiederholen und eine Art Rhythmus vorgeben, den das Schlagzeug stoisch bedient. Großes Soultheater mit allen Klischees (“You make love to me” etc.) – aber richtig klasse. Die handverlesene Band verfügt mit Ari Hoenigs akzentuiertem, aber zurückhaltendem Schlagzeugspiel, und Daryl Johns funktionalem Bass über eine extrem wirkungsvolle Rhythmusgruppe. Trompeter Wallace Roney gibt den Arrangements mit seinen Miles-Davis-lastigen Cool-Jazz-Soli etwas Entrücktes. Russell Malones Gitarrenspiel – irgendwo zwischen den Frühwerken von George Benson und Wes Montgomery – verleiht den schlichten Arrangements einen warmen Retro-Touch. Also: Für alle Jazzfans mit Blues- und Soul-Affinität ist dieses unprätentiöse Album ein Muss. Es präsentiert nicht nur begeisternde Musik perfekt arrangiert, sondern auch Macy Grays Stimme rau und ungeschminkt: exakt im Spannungsfeld zwischen kontrolliertem Höhenflug und freiem Fall. Stripped is her debut on Chesky Records, recorded in a live setting with their singular binaural microphone technique, accompanied by a premier jazz ensemble. Gray is certainly no stranger to jazz, as she has recently collaborated with saxophonist David Murray on a series of projects, and she considers herself a jazz singer at heart. As is customary, Gray reinterprets her own material, as well as several covers, all performed in a minimalist atmosphere, with maximum emotional intent. Guitarist Russell Malone introduces the bluesy "Annabelle," as Gray eases in with her trademark understated singing, ending with a light chorus by the band. A mellowed version of the "Bo Diddley beat" sets up "Sweet Baby," highlighted by the muted trumpet of Wallace Roney. Gray's most identifiable number, "I Try," is re-imagined with jazz sensibility, defined by Daryl Johns, whose acoustical bass is the bedrock of the music. The laid back sizzler "Slowly," displays Gray's ability to lay her vocals against the swaying cadence of the band, and "First Time," brings out the deft brush work of Ari Hoenig on drums, for the perfect romantic backdrop. The spirited "She Ain't Right For You," is presented with a driving reggae backbeat; and as a pleasant surprise, Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," sails gently across the Caribbean in search of tranquility. The wild card track is the Metallica cover "Nothing Else Matters," enclosed within a straight ahead bop arrangement, which transforms it into another dimension. Roney's solo on this tune, shows what a jazz artist can do when given free rein to do his thing. They keep the simmering flame ignited with "The Heart," in what could be construed as a contemporary blues, an idiom where Gray demonstrates passion under pressure. The weeping trumpet opens and intertwines within "Lucy," a sultry depiction of the conquest of love, and the promises that entails; Gray toying with the bawdy lyrics and spicing up the double entendre. Produced as one of the Chesky Binaural + Series, this record showcases Macy Gray in what might be her bona fide persona. Recorded with no over dubs, in a two-day session, this is as close to a live gig as one could imagine, with spatial realism and no audience background noise to hamper audio quality. Terry's good humor, joyful and immediately distinctive sound, and creative, bop-oriented ideas combined to form a very accessible style. This Chesky LP finds C.T. joined by pianist Don Friedman, bassist Victor Gaskin and drummer Lewis Nash for a variety of superior standards and Terry's lone original "Finger Filibuster." The songs all pay tribute to various trumpeters, and some, such as "Pennies from Heaven," "Little Jazz" and "I Don't Wanna Be Kissed," were not performed by the flugelhornist all that often; the resulting music is fresher than usual and often quite inspired.
