Händels wunderbare Musik braucht, wie man schnell feststellt, weder das eine noch das andere. Hier kann sie aus eigener Kraft strahlen, und die strahlt hell. Auch die Solisten teilen Cleoburys Werkauffassung, haben statt solistischer Profilierung stets die Gesamtwirkung im Sinn. Die klangliche Balance zwischen Solisten, dem großartigen Chor (dessen Klangreinheit schon fast sprichwörtlich ist) und dem schlanken, aber nicht zu dünnen Orchesterkörper ist schlicht perfekt. Auch wer mit barocken Oratorien bislang wenig anfangen konnte, kann hier einen erneuten Annäherungsversuch wagen: Die Chancen stehen nicht schlecht, daß man seine Einstellung ändert. Lebendiger und klangschöner kann man das neben Bachs Weihnachtsoratorium wohl populärste Werk der Gattung jedenfalls kaum aufführen. Todestages von Diaghilev veröffentlicht wurde. Das Cover reproduziert die Originalillustration, die damals von Natalia Gontscharowa, einer der berühmten Bühnenbildnerinnen der Ballets russes, entworfen wurde. Das 32-seitige Booklet, reich illustriert mit historischen Fotos und Skizzen von Kostümen, Bühnenbildern, enthält die Notizen der Ausgabe von 1954 in englischer und französischer Sprache von Igor Markevitch sowie einen kurzen Auszug aus »Le Ballet« von Boris Kochno und Werkpräsentationen des britischen Tanzspezialisten Cyril W. Beaumont. ***************************************************************************************** Rezension Zu Beginn seiner Karriere war der russische Dirigent auch als Komponist engagiert (er beendete diesen Teil seines künstlerischen Schaffens nach einer schweren Krankheit im Jahre 1941). Seinen Durchbruch verdankte er dem großen Impresario Sergej Diaghilev, Leiter der legendären “Ballets Russes” in Paris, der wohl wichtigsten Tanztheater-Institution seiner Ära. Diaghilev hatte Markevitch 1929 entdeckt, sogleich eine Komposition in Auftrag gegeben und ihn um die Mitarbeit bei einem Ballett gebeten. Das Projekt wurde zwar durch den überraschenden Tod Diaghilevs im August des Jahres gestoppt, doch Markevitchs Name war nun im Gespräch, fortan zählte auch dieser Exilrusse zu den wichtigen Kräften des Pariser Kulturlebens. Zum 25. Todestag seines Mentors im Jahre 1954 setzte er jenem ein Denkmal, in Form einer edlen (und heute so raren wie gesuchten) Drei-LP-Box mit Ballettmusik vom Spätbarock (Scarlatti) über die Genre-Hauptwerke der Romantik (Tschaikowsky, de Falla, Liadow) bis in die Moderne (Satie, Prokofieff, Strawinsky). Markevitchs Dirigat kann man am besten als “bildhaft” beschreiben, seine Interpretationen evozieren die Tänzer vor dem geistigen Auge. Die Wärme, Dynamik und Direktheit des 1954er Monoklangs (produziert hatte die Aufnahmen der legendäre Walter Legge) begeistern; das Booklet (je nach Ausgabe damals zwischen 8 und 24 Seiten lang) wurde für diese Neuausgabe auf 32 Seiten erweitert. Todestages von Diaghilev für EMI produziert Igor Markevitch kannte ihn persönlich sehr gut und schrieb auch für ihn: Serge de Diaghilev. Der Dirigent nannte ihn auf die Künste bezogen als den größten ,agent provocateur de génie‘ der Geschichte. Diaghilev vermochte es, Künstler zu absoluten Höchstleistungen zu animieren. Legendär waren sie, die “Ballets Russes” von Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel oder Eric Satie. Aber auch die passgenauen Choreographien von Fokine, Nijinsky und Massine oder die Bühnenbilder von Picasso, Braque, Utrillo, Cocteau oder Rouault. Diaghilev konnte seine „Teams“ zu spirituellen Höhenflügen animieren, wie dies etwa bei de Fallas “Dreispitz” der Fall war, wo Picasso als Bühnen- und Kostümbildner und Massine für die Choreographie verantwortlich waren. Diaghilev ließ die Atmosphäre Raum greifen, in denen Kreativität hochkochte. Besonders die Komponisten konnten sich vor Aufmunterungszurufen kaum retten. Diaghilev schickte ihnen Noten, von denen er annahm, sie würden das gerade entstehende Stück inspirieren und weiterbringen. Diaghilev war gierig nach stets Neuem. Im Moment, wo etwas im Kasten war, interessierte er sich nicht mehr dafür. Auch der an eine Premiere anknüpfende Erfolg ließ ihn kalt. Diaghilev, Kunstsammler und Ausstellungsorganisator, war ein ursprünglich aus der Provinz Novgorod stammender adelig russischer Exilierter mit all seinen Nostalgien, seiner Begeisterung, seinen exzentrischen Attitüden. Ab 1910 prägte er als Impresario der nach der Oktoberrevolution in Frankreich verbliebenen “Balletts Russes” die Pariser Ballettszene und blieb für 20 Spielzeiten der stilprägende Chef. Von Eleganz und Auftritt her wurde Diaghilev mit seinem Stock, Pelzen, Monokel, den weißen Handschuhen und Seidenschals als altmodisch wahrgenommen. In Venedig fühlte er sich am wohlsten. Er starb dort am 19. August 1929. Igor Markevitch kam in Kiew auf die Welt. So wie Celibidache, Solti, Wand, Leinsdorf oder Leitner war er ein 1912er-Jahrgang. Die Familie Markevitch floh 1914 nach Paris, später übersiedelten sie ins schweizerische Vevey. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde Igor italienischer Staatsbürger. Als Pianist war der neunjährige Markevitch Cortot-Schüler, dann akzeptierte ihn Nadia Boulanger in den Fächern Kontrapunkt und Harmonielehre als ihren Studenten. Als Dirigent war er von Hermann Scherchen und von Pierre Monteux geprägt. Markevitch war ein hochinteressanter Komponist, den Diaghilev mit der Komposition eines Klavierkonzerts und der Vertonung des Balletts “L’habit du Roi” beauftragte. 1930 wurde es von den “Ballets Russes” uraufgeführt. Mit nur 29 Jahren, nach einer schweren gesundheitlichen Krise, gab Markevitch 1941 seine Ambitionen als Komponist auf und widmete sich nun ausschließlich dem Dirigieren. Marco Polo hat Markevitch’ Orchesterwerk auf acht CDs eingespielt. Nun sind diese klanglich leider wenig befriedigenden Aufnahmen bei Naxos erhältlich. Auf der vorliegenden Box dirigiert Igor Markevitch das in exzellenter Form befindliche Philharmonia Orchestra. Der Londoner Klangkörper wurde 1945 von Walter Legge als reines Schallplatten-Orchester gegründet. Herbert von Karajan sorgte nach dem Start für höchstes Niveau. Markevitch war ein genau so großer Genauigkeitsfanatiker. Wer die historischen Videos auf YouTube ansieht, dem werden die erstaunliche Schlagtechnik, aber auch der hypnotisch wache Blick nicht entgehen. Den Taktstock führte er mit einer unbeschreiblichen Eleganz, aber auch mit der Schärfe eines Floretts. In Debussys ”Prélude á l’après-midi d’un faune” oder in Ravels “Daphnis et Chloé” weiß Markevitch aufbauend auf plastisch modellierte, impressionistisch magisch kolorierte Orchesterfarben fesselnde Bögen zu spannen. Thematische Entwicklungen geht er mit langem Atem an, um dann umso unvermittelter Höhepunkte zu entfesseln. Markevitch’ Temporegie ist von der zügigen Art, den musikalische Fluss am steten Köcheln zu halten, seine Spezialität. Emotionen lässt Markevich keinesfalls den Vorrang. Strukturelle Klarheit paart sich mit beinahe schon schmerzhafter Klangschönheit (habe ich überhaupt je einen vollmundigeren Flötenton gehört) und einer fulminanten Detailarbeit. Der Kontrollmensch Markevitch überlässt dabei nichts dem Zufall. Besonders reizvoll ist “Parade” von Eric Satie. 1917 im Théâtre du Châtelet aus der Taufe gehoben, fußt das Ballett auf einer Idee von Jean Cocteau. Wir hören eine pompös witzige Satire aus Music-Hall Tänzen und deftigen Zirkusscharaden: Eines Sonntagnachmittags produzieren sich Künstler vor dem Zelt, um beim flanierenden Publikum für Eintrittskarten zu werben. Da gibt es einen chinesischen Zauberer und flammenspeiende Trickkünstler, den Tanz des kleinen amerikanischen Mädchens oder einen “Pas de deux” der Akrobaten, der den ruhelosen Gang der Raubtiere im Käfig imitiert. Das burleske Stück wird von Markevitch in all seiner überbordenden Fantasie, dem drastisch die Realität spiegelnden Schreibmaschinengeklapper, Flugzeugmotorenbrummen und Lokpfeifen in aller orchestralen Pracht kulinarisch dargeboten. Heute kann man sich nur schwer vorstellen, dass das Stück bei der Uraufführung für einen veritablen Skandal sorgte. Aber auch “Le Spectre de la rose” von Weber-Berlioz, die Mazurka aus Chopins “Les Sylphides”, der Tanz des Müllers aus “Le Tricorne” von Manuel de Falla, drei Tänze aus “Petrouchka” von Igor Stravinsky oder die Ausschnitte aus “Schwanensee” von Tchaikovsky nutzt Markevitch geschickt dazu, orchestrale Bravour, tänzerischen Schwung und packende Rhythmen zu fulminanten Gesamtkunstwerken verschmelzen zu lassen. Auf zwei Repertoireraritäten sei noch hingewiesen: “Le pas d’acier” von Serge Prokofiev und “Kikimora” von Anatoli Liadov. Bietet Erstere eine plakative akustische Vorführung der in der Sowjetunion hoch gehaltenen Arbeit auf den Feldern und in den Fabriken mit einem bienenstockartigen Wuseln, das in ein maschinelles Ballett der Maschinen mündet, so greift “Kikimora” auf populäre russische Tänze zurück. Kikimora ist eine symphonische Dichtung über das Treiben einer legendenumwobenen russischen Hexe, die, nachdem sie ihre weiße Hauskatze getötet hat, durch das Dach flieht und die ganze Welt mit ihren Flüchen überzieht. Die Musik dazu ist volkstümlich wie das Sujet, voller grotesker und lebendiger Details. Das Cover der gediegenen Box “Igor Markevitch – Hommage a Diaghilev” ziert eine Illustration, die von der Bühnenbildnerin der “Ballets Russes” Gontscharowa entworfen wurde. Das 32-seitige Booklet mit Fotos, Kostümzeichnungen und Bühnenbildentwürfen enthält Beiträge von Igor Markevitch, Boris Kochno und Cyril W. Beaumont in englischer und französischer Sprache, die auch in der Ausgabe von 1954 enthalten waren. Die Tontechnik in gloriosem Mono bietet nichts weniger als ein Wunderwerk an natürlicher Präsenz, stupender Tiefenstaffelung und brillantem Orchesterklang. Die Pressung auf 180 g schwerem Vinyl ist makellos. Serge Diaghilev (1872-1929): the impresario who changed musical history 31st March 2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the flamboyant, visionary and influential impresario Serge Diaghilev, founder of the legendary Ballets russes. In 1906 he promoted Russian art and sculpture at the Salon d’automne in Paris, which in the early 20th century was the world’s capital of culture. He continued to be active in Paris: the following year he mounted concerts with such Russian artists as the composers Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov and Glazunov, and the singers Feodor Chaliapin and Félia Litvinne. In 1908, at the Paris Opéra, he staged Mussorgsky’s opera Boris Godunov with Chaliapin. The designs were by two Russian artists – Leon Bakst and Alexandre Benois – who became closely associated with the Ballets russes company, which Diaghilev founded in Paris in 1909. For two decades, in a period of rich cultural ferment, dramatic transition and geo-political upheaval, the Ballets russes created a sensation with its innovative fusion of dance, music and design. In 1929, when the company disbanded following Diaghilev’s death, it had played a crucial role in the evolution of the performing and visual arts. The composer and conductor Igor Markevitch met Diaghilev at the Paris Opera in December 1928, when he was only sixteen. Jahrhunderts geworden war) erstmals 1945 auf. Vier weitere Aufnahmen folgten, die letzte ist die vorliegende, entstanden 1977 – der Dirigent war 88 Jahre alt. Eine profundere Kenntnis der Orchestersuite wird wohl nie wieder jemand mitbringen – man kann das hören: In den liebevoll herausgearbeiteten klanglichen Details im "Mercury"-Satz, ganz besonders im Tiefgang von "Saturn, The Bringer Of Old Age", dem Lieblingssatz des Komponisten. Es mag wohl sein, daß man den besondes beliebten "Mars" schon mit mehr Furor und Dynamik gehört hat. Aber hier geht es nicht um vordergründige Effekte, sondern um ein Werkverständnis, das unerreicht bleiben wird. Die damals vom renommierten Lautsprecher-Hersteller KES mitproduzierte Aufnahme zählt daher bis heute zu den bedeutendsten; ihr Referenzstatus ist kaum antastbar. Oder aber mit beidem, was sich hier als augesprochen reizvolle Variante erweist. Mikhail Parhamovsky, Konzertmeister des aus elf Violinisten bestehenden Ensembles Virtuosi, schrieb die Arrangements für Solovioline, sein “Orchester” und Klavier (Vag Papian). Abgesehen von Tschaikowksys sehr selten gehörtem, aus drei Stücken bestehenden “Souvenir d’un lieu cher”, besteht das Repertoire aus Wohlbekanntem: Rachmaninoffs “Vocalise”, Schuberts “Ave Maria”, drei von Brahms’ “Ungarischen Tänzen”, Nováceks “Perpetuum Mobile”, Dvoráks “Humoresque”, Massenets “Méditation” oder Khachaturians “Säbeltanz”; die sehr feinsinnige Instrumentation Parhamovskys ist aber ein sehr angenehmer neuer Aspekt, ohne die Stücke substantiell stark zu verändern. Der Star des Abends (denn es handelt sich um einen Livemitschnitt aus dem Wiener Sofiensaal) aber ist natürlich Maxim Vengerov, zu jenem Zeitpunkt immer noch erst 26. In den Jahren zuvor hatte der gebürtige Russe bereits sämtliche großen Konzerte (mit Ausnahme von Beethoven) zur Begeisterung von Publikum und Kritik eingespielt; hier erwies er sich als ebenso souveräner Meister der kleinen Form – mit sprühender Virtuosität oder lyrischer Sensibilität, je nach Werk. Vengerov certainly seems to and so does the Viennese audience." "The latest disc from Maxim Vengerov offers some refreshingly "lite" listening. Each selection was arranged for Virtuosi (an ensemble consisting of 11 violins) by its leader, Mikhail Parhamovsky. One of the composer's more restrained works, it nonetheless features some beautiful tunes, especially the melancholy Méditation. "Vengerov continues his well-earned reputation for violin wizardry as he sets off fireworks in the more festive and volatile pieces (Novácek's Perpetuum Mobile, Monti's Csárdás), and displays a warm, lush lyricism for the gentler items, such as Rachmaninov's Vocalise, played as a duo at the start of the program. The live recording was made in Vienna's Musikvereinsaal, a location that is considerably more reverberant than was probably necessary for such a small ensemble. But given Vengerov's popularity, a smaller space, however suitable for recording, would not have accommodated so large a crowd.
