The hits included "Bennie And The Jets," a funky, falsetto stomper; the Rolling Stonesy rocker "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting"; and the gorgeous title ballad. "Candle In The Wind," an elegy for Marilyn Monroe, which didn't become a certified hit until 14 years later, when John re-recorded it with the Melbourne Symphony. Als die schwedische Firma Opus 3 die LP-Produktion einstellte, war die Analogwelt um eine echte Idylle ärmer. Denn LPs von Opus 3 zeichneten sich zum einen durch einen feinen und sehr naturalen Klang aus, zum anderen konnte man stets exzellente akustische Musik hören. Nun gibt es wieder eine neue Platte, in klanglich superben 45 Umdrehungen pro Minute und mit einer wunderschönen Auswahl an Gospelsongs, Blues und Folkweisen. Natürlich ist die Scheibe nicht neu, als CD erschien sie bereits 1994, vermutlich aber drängten wegen der herrlichen Musik nicht wenige Plattenfreunde auf eine Vinylausgabe. Aufgewachsen in New York, mit Musik von Leadbelly, Hooker, Hopkins, Odetta und zahlreichen anderen berühmten Musikern umgeben, hatte Eric Bibb bereits alle Voraussetzungen, die ein guter Musiker braucht. Natur pur - so könnte man die Philosophie des schwedischen Plattenlabels Opus 3 vielleicht griffig zusammenfassen. In einer Zeit wie der heutigen, in der die meisten Labels und Aufnahmestudios den Fokus ihrer Konzentration auf die technischen Finessen der digitalen klanglichen Nachbearbeitung und Effekthascherei verlegt haben, bleibt Opus 3 der Herangehensweise treu, mit dem das Label 1976 begann. Der natürliche Klang ist das Ziel. Ihn unverfälscht aufzuzeichnen und ebenso unverfälscht wiedergeben zu können, danach streben die Techniker bei Opus 3. Die Ausdauer und Detailfreude, mit der man bei Opus 3 den Sound einzufangen versucht, erinnert an Schmetterlingsjäger oder Sammler seltener Blumen. Zunächst wird ein Aufnahmeraum mit der perfekten Akustik gesucht. Denn warum sollte man ein Instrument im Studio aufnehmen und nachher den trockenen Klang aufwändig mit künstlichem Hall versehen, wenn es doch genügend Hallräume gibt? Räume, für die unsere akustischen Instrumente letztlich damals konzipiert wurden! Dann wird ein optimal auf die Aufnahmesituation abgestimmtes Stereo-Mikrofon an der Position des Zuhörers platziert. Denn warum sollte man mit Dutzenden von Mikrofonen und nachheriger Stereo-Verteilung einen gefälschten Raumeindruck kreieren, wenn man den echten Raum auch einfach (nun ja, so einfach ist es allerdings nicht) abbilden kann? Wenn all das perfekt eingestellt wurde, wird aufgenommen - und das war‘s. Keine Nachbearbeitung, keine Effekte, kein „Betrug am Hörer“, kein künstlich und steril hochgezüchteter Sound, sondern nur die schlichte, echte Musik. Was Opus 3 noch besonders auszeichnet, ist dass die allererste Priorität beim Einrichten des Aufnahmeraums immer der Frage gilt: wie wollen die Musiker positioniert werden? Bevor nicht die Musiker mit dem Raum und ihren Möglichkeiten zu musikalischer und optischer Kommunikation vollends zufrieden sind, wird kein Mikrofon aufgestellt. Und das gefällt: denn viel zu oft wird bei aller audiophiler Beitriebsamkeit bei anderen Labels leider vergessen, worauf es am allermeisten ankommt: die Musik selbst. Die Instrumente sind klarer umrissen, deutlicher, präsenter und haben mehr Substanz. Die Einspielung im Village Vanguard gehört zu den den aufregendsten Liveaufnahmen in diesem intimen Jazzclub in New York City überhaupt. Dabei beginnt dieses Album mit dem ekstatischen „Spiritual“ eher bedächtig und feierlich. Auch das nächste Stück ist ein relaxter Standard, der freilich von Coltrane eine aufregende Note verpasst bekam. Die dritte Nummer dagegen mündete in ein furioses Spiel Coltranes, für Harmonie-bedürftige Hörer wohl am Rande des Freejazz. With Jimmy Rowles on piano (his intro on "Sunday" sounds like a ragtimer like Willie "The Lion" Smith just pushed him off the stool before the band came in), Mel Lewis on drums, and the always superb Leroy Vinnegar on bass present and accounted for, the rhythm section is superbly swinging with just the right amount of bop lines and chords in the mix to spice things up. The ghost of Duke Ellington hovers over every note on this record (Billy Strayhorn was one of his main arrangers) and that is a very good thing, indeed. There's a beautiful, understated quality to the music on this session that makes it the perfect relaxing around the house on a rainy day disc to pop in the player. "Oscar Peterson was one of the greatest piano players of all time. A pianist with phenomenal technique on the level of his idol, Art Tatum, Peterson's speed, dexterity, and ability to swing at any tempo were amazing. Very effective in small groups, jam sessions, and in accompanying singers, O.P. was at his absolute best when performing unaccompanied solos. His original style did not fall into any specific idiom. Like Erroll Garner and George Shearing, Peterson's distinctive playing formed during the mid- to late '40s and fell somewhere between swing and bop. Peterson was criticized through the years because he used so many notes, didn't evolve much since the 1950s, and recorded a remarkable number of albums. Perhaps it is because critics ran out of favorable adjectives to use early in his career; certainly it can be said that Peterson played 100 notes when other pianists might have used ten, but all 100 usually fit, and there is nothing wrong with showing off technique when it serves the music. Wenn man die Tracklist dieses Albums durchliest, wundert einen zunächst, wie aus dieser Auswahl eine so zusammenhängende, in sich geschlossene Platte werden konnte. Bob Dylan-Songs stehen hier neben Bluesklassikern, Tom Waits-Nummern und dazwischen steht eine Neuaufnahme von Faithfulls erstem Hit „As tears go by“. Keine einzige Eigenkomposition von Marianne Faithfull selbst ist auf diesem Album.
