It's difficult to gauge whether NADA COMO EL SOL was a marketing ploy or a heartfelt attempt at crossover. In 1988, Sting re-recorded his vocals for five songs from his smash NOTHING LIKE THE SUN album in Spanish and Portuguese. In many ways, the decision makes aesthetic sense, as the original songs all have Latin-tinged arrangements, and Der Stingle himself seems quite at ease with the translations. Whether one really needs to own NADA COMO EL SOL, however--anymore than, say, Peter Gabriel's German version of "Shock the Monkey"-is debatable, though the set will certainly appeal to completists and those fluent in Spanish and/or Portuguese.

BRAND NEW DAY continues Sting's sophisticated approach toward pop music as he once again collaborates with ace musicians on material that knows no cultural or stylistic boundaries. Not surprisingly, the tantric guru chooses love as the theme for this eclectic collection of songs.
Sting's cross-cultural forays range from a collaboration with Algerian singing sensation Cheb Mami on the Ofra Haza-meets-William Orbit "Desert Rose" to the bossa nova-influenced "Big Lie Small World." There's a jazz patina throughout--guest trumpeter Chris Botti emulates Miles Davis on the coffee-house hip-bop of "Perfect Love...Gone Wrong" and long-time friend Branford Marsalis adds mournful clarinet to the sumptuous string arrangements of the noirish "Tomorrow We'll See," a song about a weary prostitute straight out of a Raymond Chandler novel. Although the upbeat yet moody title track cheerfully rings with Stevie Wonder's bubbly harmonica, Sting's restlessness on "Fill Her Up" truly stands out. The track starts out as a country song (a la "I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying") in 9/8 time only to eventually reveal an ambient gospel chorus.

The show was to be recorded and broadcast live on the web on September 11, 2001, the day of the World Trade Center tragedy. Instead of canceling it altogether, Sting went on with the recording (although the web broadcast was scrapped except for a single song), resulting in the release of the 15-song ALL THIS TIME, just two short months later. Featured are a trio of Police-era classics inventively re-arranged ("Roxanne," "Don't Stand So Close To Me," and "Every Breath You Take"), plus renditions of such solo selections as the expansive "(If You Love Somebody) Set Them Free," "Brand New Day," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," and the poignant folk-like ballad "Fields of Gold."

"When We Dance" was nominated for a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Emerging from new wave on the wings of hits like "Roxanne" and "Don't Stand So Close To Me," the Police perfected an appealing synthesis of reggae, pop and freewheeling instrumental flourishes rooted in the power trio conventions of earlier electric blues bands.
Yet for all the elemental tension Andy Summers and Stewart Copeland brought to each arrangement, Sting's keening tenor and canny ear for melodic hooks propelled the band's popularity. As his writing skills matured through SYNCHRONICITY, Sting's need for artistic control--and a tighter rhythmic focus--necessitated a band in which he was the unquestioned leader.
FIELDS OF GOLD chronicles the work of a classic pop vocalist who is simply unwilling to rest on his laurels--a wide ranging collection of brainy power pop, with two new songs ("When We Dance" and "This Cowboy") acting as stylistic bookends. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis and bassist Daryl Jones add key elements of jazz and soul to such confessional hits as "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free" and "Fortress Around Your Heart," while Sting's infatuation with Brazilian music animates the tender "Fragile." As his metaphysical and political muse evolved, Sting's orchestrations grew more ambitious, from the reggaeish strings of "Englishman In New York," through the lush, keyboard-inflected R&B of "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" and the edgy funk of "We'll Be Together." FIELDS OF GOLD is a remarkably classy, consistent set of tunes.
