Musiker: Kenny Werner, Bill Cunliffe, Mike Lang - Klavier / Orgel Johannes Weidermüller und Mike Valerio - Bass Joe La Barbera, Ari Hoenig, John Robinson - Schlagzeug Solokünstler: Glen Drewes (Trompete / Flügelhorn), Thom Rotella (Gitarre), Rickey Woodard (Tenor-Saxophon), Tom Rainer (Klarinette) und Luis Conte (Perkussion) Product Information All tracks for this double LP 45rpm album were mixed and mastered in analog tape. Two of the 15 tracks are original ProTools recordings, one tracks is an analog / ProTools hybrid, and the other 12 tracks are pure analog tape. The musicians are stellar and the music is jazz reinvented in some Pop tunes of the '50s along with wonderful arrangements of jazz standard composed in the same decade – including »Cry Me A River«.– Known for her lush low notes, beautiful intonation, rich interpretations and phrasing, Lyn has been described by Scott Yanow as a »superior singer« and Don Heckman stated she »..is a potentially significant new [jazz] talent.« Rezensionen »Lyn Stanley benutzte dasselbe Neumann-47-Mikro, in das Frank Sinatra und Nat King Cole auch schon gesungen hatten. A. begleiten.« (Audio, Januar 2015) ************************************************************************************************** Strictly limited to 1,000 copies! Lyn Stanley returns with classic song hits of the 1950s — captivating and imaginative Produced by renowned jazz pianist/composer Kenny Werner Recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt; mastered by Bernie Grundman All songs mixed and mastered on analog tape 180-gram 45 RPM gatefold double LP pressed by RTI Lynn Stanley's Interludes and Potions: From The '50s included in AllAboutJazz.com's Best Releases of 2015! "On Potions, Stanley assembles 15 pieces prominent in the 1950s. They are not all jazz standards or showtunes, though both are in evidence. Stanley's artistic care and attention to detail expresses itself from the start ... On Potions, Stanley perfects the thematic ring of her collection, adding one more bit of the past, analog recording. Music this warm should be bonded like fine brandy heated by the smoke of a Monte Cristo." — C. Michael Bailey, AllAboutJazz.com "Potions takes Lyn Stanley higher — Lost In Romance successfully achieved its objectives, presenting Lyn Stanley to a well-targeted international audiophile audience appreciative of both good material well-sung and the highest caliber sonics. The album was musical and sonic comfort food for an audience hungry for it. ... For her all-important follow-up Ms. Stanley doesn't stray all that far from her original game plan though the album's concept is in far better focus. Potions collects fourteen songs, mostly from the non-rock side of the 1950s (plus one LP bonus track from a different decade dedicated to her mentor Paul T. Smith who passed away in June of 2013). ... She glides and soars with an ease and control only occasionally heard on the debut, taking unexpected turns and abrupt volume shifts. She lingers longer and moves from phrase to phrase more gracefully and with greater rhythmic and intonation agility. ...the production and sound (are) even better here, again engineered and mixed by the great Al Schmitt. ... I guarantee you that Potions is among the best sounding new records (or SACDs) you are likely to hear this year or next, or the year after that." — Music = 9/11; Sound = 11/11 - Michael Fremer, AnalogPlanet.com. "Sure, she swings and almost belts it out in a few places, but the intelligence, restraint, and endless subtle inflections of her interpretations are what shine through everything." — Mark S. Tucker, acousticmusic.com. See the whole review. "The sound is simply stunning. Let me say that one more time in case you didn't hear me the first time; this is one good sounding LP! I love "Lullaby of Birdland." You can hear every nuance of her vocals and the instruments. Superb phrasing. I enjoyed every song on these two LPs." — Jack Roberts, dagogo.com, Nov. 2014 "Special recognition for the success of this album go to her arrangers, Steve Rawlins, Tamir Hendelman, Bill Cunliffe, and Mike Lang, who have taken these songs that are well known by anyone with even a passing knowledge of Jazz standards, songs sung by artists who have burned the memory of their version into the collective consciousness, and with their inventive efforts, have given them all a fresh spin that, along with Ms. Stanley's sweet and slightly smokey voice, have unearthed new delights, whether it be a tender lyric, or a new intent to the song not noticed before." — Jonathan Shade, cabaretexchange.com. See the whole review. "With her second album, Lyn Stanley has shown the Jazz scene that she is here to stay for quite a long time. Potions — From The 50's is a highly enjoyable collection of songs, all taken from the decade that introduced us to such disparate items as "I Love Lucy", the TV dinner, Holden Caulfield, and the Hula Hoop; where Eisenhower was President, and a change in the air was ever-looming near the end of last "innocent" decade of the 20th century." — NiteLife Exchange. "In my review of Lyn Stanley's first album, Lost in Romance, I said 'The 1940s style picture of a forlorn lady sitting on a piano, the title Lost In Romance, and the beautiful full toned music of this album never in a million years says, new artist. I had never heard of her but her website says she was discovered in 2010 by world class jazz pianist Paul Smith. Well since then I have had the privilege to meet this delightful lady and to hear her sing live. Having heard some of the songs on her new LP at audio shows played from the original lacquers it was with some excitement that I awaited to hear the LPs on my own system. Let me say in no way was I disappointed. I truly loved her selection of songs." — Jack Roberts, dagogo.com. Read the whole review. Breaking News! Lyn Stanley selected as one of 40 semi-finalists in the 2014 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Chosen from a worldwide field of 500 female vocalists! Jazz singing phenomenon Lyn Stanley returns with a follow-up to her smash audiophile triumph Lost In Romance — a brilliant new collection of classics of the 1950s titled Potions. Potions draws from a broad palette of jazz, popular hits, blues, country, R&B and doo-wop (and one very special Gershiwn classic "The Man I Love" in a bonus track). "There were so many changes in jazz and pop tunes, while the introduction of rock 'n' roll happened in the 1950s," Stanley says. "As I began my journey of deciding which songs to include on this album, it was clear that the choices were way too many so I decided to let my heart guide me. It was a feeling thing." Stanley says many of these songs need hearts with "'worn tires' to get to where I think the composers intended. I also wanted to celebrate the 'Retro Jazz' effort of the era where swing was again 'hip.'" Stanley, a unique sultry jazz vocalist from the Los Angeles area, became an instant international success with her debut standards album, Lost In Romance, released Aug. 27, 2013, selling 7,000 copies worldwide to date. The album received several accolades in the hi fi world of audiophiles including Album of Choice, Best of 2013 Albums, No. 6/100 Top Vinyl Albums the highest rated by Chinese reviewer, Jack Lui in his 2014 book, "All About Vinyl" and awarded Top Rated Album by AnalogPlanet.com — "a must-have album for any audiophile collector" by renown international critic, Michael Fremer, who calls Stanley the "Chanteuse Extraordinaire." Stanley in October 2014 was named one of 40 semifinalists in the 2014 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. There were more than 500 female vocalists who entered from around the world. The award honors the "divine" jazz icon, who herself was the winner of an amateur singing contest at the legendary Apollo Theater when she was a teenager. To honor Vaughan's legacy the New Jersey Performing Arts Center holds a worldwide talent search culminating with an exciting concert in the Victoria Theater. Also a former USA amateur ballroom dance Pro/Am champion, Stanley's unique voice has been described as "beautiful," "rich in low tones," with "phrasing and storytelling that makes her music very personal." Her dancing background adds a special feel that few artists can deliver. L.A. jazz radio personality Bubba Jackson describes her as "the real deal — she has brought the songstress back to jazz!" Stanley was discovered by world-class jazz legend, pianist Paul Smith, best known as Ella Fitzgerald's accompanist/conductor. For Potions, Stanley decided to take the ultimate leap into analog recording by tackling a new album with a 1950s theme — an era when analog was king — and securing a world-class team to record and manufacture the album. Stanley hired renowned jazz pianist/composer and producer Kenny Werner to produce Potions. Werner, Bill Cunliffe, Mike Lang, Steve Rawlins, Tamir Hendelman and Lyn herself were arrangers for the project, defining the album concept and song selections. Al Schmitt was the recording and mixing engineer; the album was mastered by Bernie Grundman. The recording venues included Hollywood's legendary Capitol Recording Studios (Studio A — musician tracking and some vocals, Studio B — percussion and some vocals), and Avatar Recording Studio C in New York, where Stanley recorded with Werner and his musician trio. The vocalist microphone used in Los Angeles and NYC tracking for vocals was a Neumann U47, and the vocals recorded at Capitol were with the same Neumann U47 used by Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra. The album contains 15 tracks, 12 of which are pure analog tape original recordings from start to finish, through the musicians/vocals, mixing and mastering. Two tracks — "In The Still Of The Night" and "The Party's Over" — were recorded in PCM/ProTools (192/32) but the mixing and mastering were done on analog tape. One of the tracks — "Love Potion No. 9" is a hybrid — some of the musician tracks were recorded in analog and others in ProTools (192/32). Record Technology Incorporated (RTI) began the plating process of the initial mastered lacquers within two hours of their completion by Bernie Grundman. New stampers were used for every 300 albums pressed. The initial pressing for the 180-gram 45 RPM double album called for 1,500 units — 1,000 numbered and 500 non-numbered. The album will also be produced as a Hybrid SACD by Sony's DADC plant in Austria. All of the technological resources at hand cannot produce great music without great artistry — a quality in abundance on this remarkable recording. Remarkable musicianship, brilliant arrangements and inspired concepts for every song, coupled with Stanley's radiant vocal artistry, make her second album simply mesmerizing. Musicians: Kenny Werner, Bill Cunliffe, Mike Lang, piano/organ Johannes Weidermeuller and Mike Valerio, bass Joe La Barbera, Ari Hoenig, John Robinson, drums Soloists: Glen Drewes (trumpet/flugelhorn), Thom Rotella (guitar), Rickey Woodard (tenor saxophone), Tom Rainer (clarinet) and Luis Conte (percussion) **************************************************************************************************
