Juli 2019 Müsste man diese Veröffentlichung mit einem Wort beschreiben, so wäre „monumental“ wohl das einzig angebrachte. Bedrich Smetanas Meisterwerk „Mein Vaterland“, gespielt von einem der besten Orchester Europas, geleitet von Star-Dirigent Jakob Hrusa und im Direktschnitt-Verfahren aufgenommen so entstand diese 3LP-Box, die eine völlig einzigartige Hörerfahrung bietet. Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) gilt neben Antonin Dvorak als der bedeutendste tschechische Komponist. Mit seinem Zyklus „Mein Vaterland“ ist er in die Musikgeschichte eingegangen. Das umfangreiche Werk besteht aus sechs symphonischen Dichtungen, denen auf dieser Veröffentlichung je eine LP-Seite zusteht. Am berühmtesten ist zweifellos die zweite Dichtung „Die Moldau“, deren Thema zu den großen Ohrwürmern der Orchestermusik zählt. Smetanas Intention, mythische, geschichtliche und naturbezogene Bilder entstehen zu lassen, wird diese mehr als außergewöhnliche Aufnahme voll gerecht. Wer bei geschlossenen Augen diese Platten hört, wird förmlich mitgerissen von dem lebhaften Orchesterklang. Die Spannung, die die Bamberger Symphoniker hier erzeugen, geht mit Sicherheit auch auf die besondere Aufnahmesituation zurück. Beim Direct-To-Disc-Verfahren wird das Signal der Mikrophone (in diesem Fall nur vier Stück, doch sie bilden den Klang des Orchesters in aller Tiefe ab) direkt auf die Lackplatte geschnitten ohne Möglichkeit, im Nachhinein noch etwas zu verändern. Dank dieser wahrhaftig „direkten“ Aufnahme bei 45rpm entsteht eine atemberaubende Tonqualität, die dem Konzerterlebnis so nahekommt, wie es nur irgend möglich ist. Toningenieur Rainer Maillard von den „Emil Berliner Studios“ hat hervorragende Arbeit geleistet: vom ersten Harfenklang bis zum heroischen Schluss hat man das Gefühl, in der ersten Reihe zu sitzen und einen ganz besonderen Konzertabend mitzuerleben. Jede feine Nuance des Klangs wird genau abgebildet und doch verschmilzt alles zu einem vollen, runden und strahlenden Klangkörper. Selbstverständlich kommt diese akustische Offenbarung auf hochwertigem 180g-Vinyl und ist mit einem üppigen Booklet ausgestattet. Genießer klassischer Musik sollten nicht lange zögern, denn die Box ist handsigniert und auf 1111 Stück limitiert. Diese Aufnahme wird ausschließlich auf Vinyl veröffentlicht. *********************************************************************************************** Bedrich Smetana: Ma Vlast (Mein Vaterland); (180g / direct-to-disc Recording / 45rpm / Limited Edition); Bamberger Symphoniker, Jakub Hrusa; 3 LPS Accentus, Vinyl-Direktschnitt-Aufnahme 07/2019, Veröffentlichung 04/09/2020 (80') - Rezension von Remy Franck Unter der Leitung ihres Chefdirigenten Jakub Hrusa haben die Bamberger Symphoniker Smetanas Zyklus Ma Vlast (Mein Vaterland) im Direct-to-Disc-Verfahren auf Vinyl aufgenommen, einer Technik, bei der die Schallplatte direkt als Aufzeichnungsmedium dient. Nur vier Mikrofone wurden verwendet, und ihr Signal wurde über ein analoges Mischpult direkt an den Schneidstichel gesendet. Dieser modulierte in Echtzeit mit 45 Umdrehungen pro Minute die Rille in das Original. Die 45 rpm-LPs, die Accentus nun veröffentlicht, sind direkte Kopien der analogen Originale, von denen 1111 Exemplare als limitierte und nummerierte internationale Edition erhältlich sind. Die unglaubliche Klangtreue konnten wir auf unserem THORENS-Plattenspieler verifizieren. Die Aufnahmen haben eine phänomenale Klangfülle, Präsenz und Ausgewogenheit sowie vor allem eine große klangliche Wärme. Sie sind der 2016 bei Tudor erschienenen Surround-Aufnahme deutlich überlegen, nicht zuletzt weil die Dynamik erheblich ausgeglichener ist. Was die Interpretation anbelangt, ist kein großer Unterschied zu der Tudor-Aufnahme festzustellen. Die Zeiten der einzelnen Tondichtungen sind auch nur unwesentlich verschieden. Auf das opulent, breit und feierlich zelebrierte Vysherad folgt eine flüssig gespielte Moldau, in der sich Hrusa hütet, auf die Gefühlstube zu drücken, wenngleich hier etwas mehr Empfindsamkeit festzustellen ist als in der Tudor-Einspielung. Auch ist die Transparenz des Orchesterklangs wesentlich höher. Das klangliche Resultat ist faszinierend: der Hörer hat den Eindruck, sich unmittelbar vor dem Dirigentenpult zu befinden. Viel Power entwickelt Hrusa auch im dritten Teil, Sarka: die Musik ist wunderbar detailreich, wird effektvoll differenziert und gesteigert und bleibt durchgehend spannend in einer sehr schwungvoll federnden Interpretation. Sehr schön detailreich und frisch wird Aus Böhmens Hain und Flur gestaltet. Smetanas « Gedanken und Gefühle beim Anblick der böhmischen Heimat“ werden nicht übertrieben, aber nach besten Wissen und Können möglichst authentisch wiedergegeben. Tábor, im 19. Jahrhundert ein Symbol der tschechischen nationalen Wiedergeburt, beruht auf dem alten Hussitenchoral ‘Die ihr Gotteskämpfer seid’. Hrusa dirigiert das Stück recht draufgängerisch, während die sechste symphonische Dichtung, Blanik (ein Berg, in dem ein tschechisches Ritterheer – vom Heiligen Wenzel geführt – verborgen schläft und dem Land in schlechten Zeiten helfen soll), wie schon in der Tudor-Aufnahme voller Vaterlandsliebe, gefühlsvoll, symphonisch großartig und mit viel Ausdruckskraft interpretiert wird. Doch neben der spannenden Interpretation ist vor allem die Qualität der Tonaufnahme direkt sensationell. Wir sind zwar gute Aufnahmen von Accentus gewohnt, aber was hier mit 4 Mikrophonen in einem reinen Analogverfahren und ohne jedwede Zwischenstufen erreicht wurde, ist verblüffend, was Präzision der Klangabbildung (man wähnt sich wirklich im Keilberth-Saal in Bamberg), Balance und Räumlichkeit anbelangt. Der Klang ist sagenhaft natürlich, ohne jede Verdickung, auch nicht im mächtigsten Tutti. Immerhin wurden ja auch die originalen Lackfolien, wie Accentus unterstreicht, « umgehend zum Presswerk gebracht, wo im galvanischen Verfahren die Pressmatrizen abgezogen wurden. Die so entstandenen Vinyl-Langspielplatten sind somit nicht nur rein analoge, sondern auch direkte Abzüge der Originale ». Only four microphones were used, and their signal was sent directly to the cutting stylus via an analogue mixing console. This modulated the groove into the original in real time at 45 revolutions per minute. The 45 rpm LPs now released by Accentus are direct copies of the analogue originals. 1111 sets are available as limited and numbered international edition. We were able to verify the incredible fidelity of sound on our THORENS turntable. The recordings have a phenomenal full sound, presence and balance and above all a great tonal warmth and are clearly superior to the surround recording released by Tudor in 2016, not least because the dynamics are much more balanced. As far as the interpretation is concerned, there is not much difference to the Tudor recording. The opulent, broad and solemnly celebrated Vysherad is followed by a fluently played Vltava, in which Hrusa is careful not to press on the emotional side, although a little more sensitivity can be observed here than in the Tudor recording. The transparency of the orchestral sound is also much higher. The tonal result is fascinating: the listener has the impression of being directly in front of the conductor’s podium. Hrusa also develops a lot of power in the third part, Sarka: the music is wonderfully detailed, is effectively differentiated and remains exciting throughout in a very flexible interpretation. From Bohemia’s Woods & Fields is beautifully detailed and fresh. Smetana’s « Thoughts and feelings at the sight of the Bohemian homeland » are not exaggerated, but are reproduced as authentically as possible to the best of our knowledge and ability. Tábor, in the 19th century a symbol of the Czech national revival in the 19th century, is based on the old Hussite chant ‘Those who fight for God’. Hrusa conducts it in a rather intrepid manner, while the sixth symphonic poem, Blanik (a mountain where a Czech army of knights – led by St. Wenceslas – sleeps hidden and is supposed to help the country in bad times), is performed, as in the Tudor recording, with a lot of patriotism, soulfully, symphonically magnificent and with great expressiveness. But besides the exciting interpretation, the quality of the recording is directly sensational. We are used to good recordings by Accentus, but what has been achieved here with 4 microphones in a purely analogue process and without any intermediate stages is amazing in terms of precision of sound reproduction (you really feel like being in the Keilberth Hall in Bamberg), balance and spatiality. The sound is fabulously natural, without any thickening, even in the most powerful tutti. After all, as Accentus points out, the original lacquer discs were « immediately taken to the pressing plant, where the stampers were produced by electro-plating. The resulting vinyl LPs are thus not only purely analogue, but also direct copies of the originals ». Having performed it countless times ever since the Czech conductor stepped up to the podium in 2016, the Bamberg Symphony, whose own historical roots go back to Prague, recorded the work on vinyl in July 2019 using the “direct-to-disc” process, a technique where the record is used directly as a recording medium. Only four microphones were used and their signal was sent directly to the cutting stylus via an analog mixing console. This modulated the groove into the original in real-time at 45 revolutions per minute, which furthermore enhances this exceptional recording’s audio quality. As with Haitink’s Bruckner, this new Bamberg version of Smetana’s Ma Vlast was overseen by engineers based at the Emil Berliner studios. Their website stresses that the D2D process can be “a liberating, deeply authentic and honest experience”, though, crucially, “boring interpretations will not magically be improved.” The same equipment was transported from Berlin to Bamberg, though the microphone set up was different. And this Ma Vlast isn’t a concert performance, its six tone poems recorded individually in single takes in July 2019 and spread across six 45rpm LP sides. If you’re rolling your eyes and wondering why such an arcane production method was used, you need to hear this set, and remind yourself of what life was like before streaming, when recorded music was an unbroken analogue stream of sound, not broken up into minuscule fragments. I’m no Luddite, but it’s refreshing to be swept back to the pre-digital era, when listening to a piece of music involved sitting down, sitting still and shutting up. The recording has incredible presence and depth. Jakub Hrůša and the Bamberger Symphoniker have performed Ma Vlast countless times and they’ve already issued an excellent CD version, but this vinyl release is better still. Tempi are marginally faster, presumably a reflection of heightened adrenalin levels. One player quoted in the booklet compares the orchestra’s solo players to footballers lining up for penalty shootouts. The Joseph-Keilberth-Saal of Bamberg’s Konzerthalle has a warmer, more alluring acoustic than Berlin’s Philharmonie, and the finer details of Smetana’s scoring register with thrilling impact. The solo harp at the start of Vyšehrad is incredibly vivid, and the brass, however weighty, never sound oppressive. Vltava’s main theme really swings. Hrůša whips up a storm in Šárka’s final moments, and From Bohemia’s Woods and Field opens with a glorious, impressionist cloud of sound, Smetana’s woodwind writing looking forward to Nielsen. Everything’s a touch more vivid and visceral on vinyl, the timpani strokes at the close of Tabor’s stark close suitably curt and punchy. Blaník’s apotheosis sounds entirely deserved, and there’s the sense that this music really means something to these players, and that, as with the Bruckner 7, this is as close to live performance as many of us are likely to get in the immediate future. It’s an exciting ride, and 80 minutes of joyous music making. Accentus’s production values are impressive, making this box set something you’ll want to bequeath to a favourite child in your will. *****************************************************************************************
