"12 Songs" kann man ohne Übertreibung zu den schönsten Alben des schrulligen Songwriters Randy Newman zählen, zumal er mit Ry Cooder auch den adäquaten Gitarristen an Bord hatte! Schon alleine die Bluesballade "Let's Burn Down The Cornfield" dürfte jeden Musikliebhaber mit dem Hang zur akustischen Musik faszinieren. Diese CD darf für heutige Songwriter auch durchaus als Lehrstück gelten, denn Newman hat sowohl in den Midtempostücken als auch bei den Balladen erstklassige Melodien geschrieben. Man höre als prägnantes Beispiel "Suzanne" oder "Mama Told Me Not To Come", sehr schön ist auch "Lovers Prayer", bei dem Newman allein am Piano spielt. Die analogen Bänder wurden von Kevin Gray neu gemastert. Er entschied sich hierbei dafür das Grundrauschen nur geringfügig einzudämmen um die wunderbare Präsenz der Aufnahme nicht einzuschränken. Das 1989er Album Cosmic Thing war der kommerziell größte Erfolg der Band und gleichzeitig ihr Comebackalbum nachdem das vorherige Album sich als veritabler Flop erwies. Die Top Hits „Cosmic Thing", „Love Shack" und „Roam" werden bis heute gespielt. Musikkritiker sind sich jedoch einig, dass „Deadbeat Club", ein für ein Tanzalbum ungewöhnlich reflektierender Song, die wichtigste Nummer auf diesem Album ist. Die B-52s haben nie behauptet große Musik zu produzieren und auch dieses Werk ist nicht etwa für herausragende Arrangements bekannt geworden, sondern für seine Fähigkeit gute Laune zu verbreiten und auch den müdesten Clubbesucher auf die Tanzfläche zu ziehen. Das Audio Fdility Re-Mastering durch Kevin Gray ist HDCD codiert und besitzt mehr echte Dynamik als die zuvor stärker komprimierten Versionen. Paul Simon hatte während seiner Zeit in England zwar eine Vielzahl an Stücken bearbeitet, doch war es schwierig diesen den modernen Folk-Rock Sound anzuerziehen. Trotz dieser widrigen Umstände und der kurzen Zeit für die Produktion sollte das Album auf Platz 3 der US Charts landen und somit die finanzielle Grundlage für die späteren Grundlagen liefern, die mit mehr Zeit produziert werden konnten. Neben dem bekannten Titelsong enthält das Album einige weites gehend unbekannte Juwelen wie das Instrumentalstück Anji und das erst später berühmt werdende Stück „I am a Rock". Das Audio Fidelity Re-Mastering stammt von Kevin Gray bei AcousTech in Kalifornien und die 24-Karat-Gold-CD ist zusätzlich mit HDCD codiert. Der „Fireball“ von Gillan, Blackmore & Co war nicht mehr zu stoppen. Ein würdiger Nachfolger der „In Rock“-Platte gibt sich ein Highlight nach dem Anderen die Türklinke in die Hand. Im Titelsong ist wohl das erste Rock-Bass-Solo der Weltgeschichte zu hören, die Stakkato-hämmernde Orgel von Jon Lord treibt nach vorne und Ian Gillan ist in Höchstform. Funky, sexy, groovy Synonyme für „No No No“ und Blackmore spielt wohl eines seiner melodiösesten Solos überhaupt. Der Triumph der Langsamkeit. Ähnliche Attribute treffen auf „Demons Eye“ zu. Der von der Orgel angeleierte Groove startet einen der besten moody Rocktracks der 70er. Der sich ständig wiederholende Gitarren Riff und die zweisaitigen Bends von Blackmore sind einzigartig. Damals wurden noch Rock-Songs mit Ohrwurm Charakter geschrieben, die jeder nachvollziehen und nachsingen konnte. Hat man den Song 3 - 4 gehört, bekommt man den Riff nicht mehr aus dem Kopf. Danach kommt das für Purple ungewöhnliche „Anyones Daughter“. Gillan hatte später einmal gesagt, dass es ein Fehler gewesen sei, das Stück mit ins Album zu nehmen. „The Mule“ und „No One Came“ sind ordentliche Rocksongs, aber das Highlight ist eindeutig „Fools“. Dies haben die Jungs Live leider so gut wie nie gespielt. Der lange ruhige Einstieg ist Auftakt zu einem krachenden Groove, die 2 Strophen sind aber nur das Warm-Up zum langen, psychedelischen Jam, der sogar die Hotlegs wie Sylvester Stewart später mal in einem Interview erzählte zu ihrem One- Hit-Wonder-Millionenhit „Neandertal Man“ inspiriert hatte. Das Audio Fidelity ReMastering stammt von Steve Hoffman und der Titel erscheint als 24 Karat-Gold-CD mit zusätzlicher HDCD-Codierung. Das analoge Band war ganz offenbar in gutem Zustand und das klangliche Ergebnis ist warm und gleichzeitig mit der erhofften Durchhörbarkeit. Waren schon sein Debüt von 1968 und besonders auch das famose "Sweet Baby James" bedeutende Werke, so wird das 1971 erschienene Album "Mud Slide Slim And The Blue Horizon" oft als sein Meisterwerk angesehen. So enthält es seinen einzigen Nr.1-Hit, nämlich "You've Got A Friend", für den er auch einen Grammy erhielt. Taylor verstand es hier, seine Lieder, ähnlich wie etwa Cat Stevens, trotz einfacher Instrumentierung (Akustikgitarre, Piano, Bass) vielfältig zu gestalten. Und dass sich bei den Aufnahmen (3. Januar bis 28.
