This Japanese Pressing proves that this 24-Karat Gold CD is definitely a first run of this Out of Print Limited Edition classic. This recording being offered states “Disc Manufactured in Japan”. This separates the men from the boys when it comes to First Generation collectibles. ............................. This Ray Charles DCC Gold Disc was one of the first five ever produced by DCC. This album from 1963 peaked at #2 on the Billboard Album Chart and yielded two top singles - Busted and That Lucky Old Sun. Wonderful sound quality, great performances and arrangements will make this a memorable Gold Disc. Features four bonus tracks from various singles of this period by Ray Charles. ............................. By the legendary Steve Hoffman -- ............................. "When INGREDIENTS IN A RECIPE FOR SOUL was released by ABC-Paramount Records in August of 1963, it immediately burst upon the charts. Ray Charles had wanted to do an album that was mainly jazz/blues-based in an effort to distance himself a little bit from the country and western songs he was singing throughout 1962. ............................. The album jumped up the Billboard Album Chart in August of '63 peaking at number 2. It stayed on the chart for 32 weeks. The two singles released from the album did extremely well. BUSTED hit number 4 in September of that year. THAT LUCKY OLD SUN peaked at number 20 in December two weeks after the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Although it had been released in the middle of November. SUN seemed to be played much more after Kennedy was killed. It seemed to be perfect for the mood of the country in that bleak December. ............................. Even a cursory glance at the credits of INGEDIENTS IN A RECIPE FOR SOUL reveal an amazing fact: this album was recorded in just two days. Three songs were recorded live in four hours at United in Hollywood and the remaining eight were laid down in an amazing six hour session at Capitol in NYC. That fact is that Ray and producer Sid Feller knew what they wanted from each other and what they expected from the musicians, arrangers and recording engineers - nothing less than perfection. As a listen to this disc will reveal, perfection was achieved. ............................. The INGREDIENTS IN A RECIPE FOR SOUL session tapes show only one or two "takes" per selection, each different in just one way - interpretation. Ray never sang them the same way twice. IN THE EVENING (WHEN THE SUN DOES DOWN), is a perfect example. The unreleased version is at a much faster tempo, not as dramatic as the released version but spirited. When the second (issued) take was laid down, the pace slowed and the performance became more brooding and intense: perfect for the album's mood. The climax of the album YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE is a finale worthy of an encore at the London Palladium. Sid Feller's arrangement throws in every curve possible in music of this nature. When "Night Moves" first became an inescapable FM radio staple in 1976, Bob Seger was often called Detroit's answer to Bruce Springsteen. Given Seger's decade-plus in relative obscurity before this commercial breakthrough, though, it may be surprising to some that Seger's career began far earlier than that of Springsteen. ........................... Although NIGHT MOVES is not often thought of as a concept album, there are definite thematic links throughout this well-constructed and thoughtful record, all of them rooted in the double-punch, call-to-arms opening of "Rock and Roll Never Forgets," which is followed by the rueful, low-key title track. The first baby-boomers were turning 30 around '76, and NIGHT MOVES is filled with ruminations on lost youth, from the heartfelt "Mainstreet" to the rockabilly rave-up cover of Ronnie Hawkins's "Mary Lou," which closes the album. There were few '70s rock albums as widely anticipated as this, McCartney's first solo recording. In the wake of the Beatles' well-publicized acrimony, Paul must have felt like tweaking people's expectations because McCARTNEY turned out to be the most unconventional, resolutely non-commercial recording of his career. Don't be misled by the presence of the megahit "Maybe I'm Amazed." While that piano-based song of self-discovery and romantic devotion is a superb, moving composition, it's the anomaly here. Most of McCARTNEY is taken up by breezy song ideas and sonic experimentation. McCartney recorded this in his home studio, and plays nearly all of the instruments himself. There are strange song fragments, percussion-centered instrumentals, and some spontaneous-sounding toss-offs, but interspersed among these are bona fide McCartney gems, including the light, meditative "That Would Be Something" and the melancholic ballad "Junk." McCARTNEY is the sound of a man trying to cast off the chains of his reputation by indulging in some lighthearted experimentation. Paul McCartney retreated from the spotlight of the Beatles by recording his first solo album at his home studio, performing nearly all of the instruments himself. Appropriately, McCartney has an endearingly ragged, homemade quality that makes even its filler — and there is quite a bit of filler — rather ingratiating. Only a handful of songs rank as full-fledged McCartney classics, but those songs — the light folk-pop of "That Would Be Something," the sweet, gentle "Every Night," the ramshackle Beatles leftover "Teddy Boy," and the staggering "Maybe I'm Amazed" (not coincidentally the only rocker on the album) — are full of all the easy melodic charm that is McCartney's trademark. The rest of the album is charmingly slight, especially if it is read as a way to bring Paul back to earth after the heights of the Beatles. At the time the throwaway nature of much of the material was a shock, but it has become charming in retrospect. The album was also his most commercially successful--selling well and spawning two hit singles, the multi-part pop suite of the title track, and the roaring rocker "Jet." On these cuts, and elsewhere, McCartney's penchant for sophisticated, nuanced arrangements and irrepressibly catchy melodic hooks is up to the caliber he displayed in the Beatles, far surpassing the first two Wings releases WILDLIFE and RED ROSE SPEEDWAY. .......................... The focus found in BAND ON THE RUN may have to do with the circumstances of its creation: Two former members quit the band prior to recording, leaving McCartney, wife Linda, and guitarist Denny Laine to complete the album alone (with Paul writing, producing, and playing most of the instruments himself). The album has the majestic, orchestral sweep of McCartney's ABBEY ROAD-era ambition, with a wide range of style-dabbling, from the swaying, acoustic jazz-pop of "Bluebird" to the appealing, straightforward rock of "Helen Wheels" to the wiry blues of "Let Me Roll It" to the swaying, one-off pub singalong "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)"). Neither the dippy, rustic Wild Life nor the slick AOR flourishes of Red Rose Speedway earned Paul McCartney much respect, so he made the self-consciously ambitious Band on the Run to rebuke his critics. On the surface, Band on the Run appears to be constructed as a song cycle in the vein of Abbey Road, but subsequent listens reveal that the only similarities the two albums share are simply superficial. McCartney's talent for songcraft and nuanced arrangements is in ample display throughout the record, which makes many of the songs — including the nonsensical title track — sound more substantial than they actually are. While a handful of the songs are excellent — the surging, inspired surrealism of "Jet" is by far one of his best solo recordings, "Bluebird" is sunny acoustic pop, and "Helen Wheels" captures McCartney rocking with abandon — most of the songs are more style than substance. Yet McCartney's melodies are more consistent than any of his previous solo records, and there are no throwaways; the songs just happen to be not very good. Still, the record is enjoyable, whether it's the minor-key "Mrs. Vandebilt" or "Let Me Roll It," a silly response to John Lennon's "How Do You Sleep?," which does make Band on the Run one of McCartney's finest solo efforts. However, there's little of real substance on the record. Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine ............. Throughout 1969 and into 1970, CCR toured incessantly and recorded nearly as much. Appropriately, Cosmo's Factory's first single was the working band's anthem "Travelin' Band," a funny, piledriving rocker with a blaring horn section — the first indication their sonic palette was broadening. Two more singles appeared prior to the album's release, backed by John Fogerty originals that rivaled the A-side or paled just slightly. When it came time to assemble a full album, Fogerty had only one original left, the claustrophobic, paranoid rocker "Ramble Tamble." Unlike some extended instrumentals, this was dramatic and had a direction — a distinction made clear by the meandering jam that brings CCR's version of "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" to 11 minutes. Even if it wanders, their take on the Marvin Gaye classic isn't unpleasant, and their faithful, exuberant takes on the Sun classics "Ooby Dooby" and "My Baby Left Me" are joyous tributes. Still, the heart of the album lays in those six fantastic songs released on singles. "Up Around the Bend" is a searing rocker, one of their best, balanced by the menacing murkiness of "Run Through the Jungle." "Who'll Stop the Rain"'s poignant melody and melancholy undertow has a counterpart in Fogerty's dope song, "Lookin' out My Back Door," a charming, bright shuffle, filled with dancing animals and domestic bliss - he had never been as sweet and silly as he is here. On "Long as I Can See the Light," the record's final song, he again finds solace in home, anchored by a soulful, laid-back groove. It hits a comforting, elegiac note, the perfect way to draw Cosmo's Factory — an album made during stress and chaos, filled with raging rockers, covers, and intense jams — to a close. ..............

Im Winter 1970 sind die Doors keinen Pfifferling mehr wert. So scheint es zumindest: Nach Jims Blackout in Miami ist kein Konzertveranstalter mehr bereit, das personifizierte Chaos in seinen Club zu holen. Die Band ist zerstritten, Morrison alkoholabhängig und obendrein weigert sich Paul Rothchild, ihr langjähriger Produzent, das kommende Album zu betreuen. Indem er behauptet, die neuen Songs klängen nach Cocktail Lounge Music, provoziert er das Quartett immerhin so sehr, daß die trotzig gewordenen Doors auch ohne ihn eines ihrer besten Alben aufnehmen.................................................Mit Toningenieur Bruce Botnick verwandeln sie ihren Übungsraum in ein Studio, die Toilette wird zur Gesangskabine. Morrisons Stimme hat unter den Exzessen gelitten, strahlt aber eine majestätische Schwere aus. Die Band besinnt sich auf ihre Wurzeln und verweist mit Tracks wie Cars Hiss By My Window oder Crawling King Snake auf den von Jim so geliebten Blues. Jerry Scheff, der Bassist von Elvis, sorgt für Bodenhaftung und wird Zeuge, wie die Doors mit "Riders On The Storm" einen ihrer magischen, alle Formate sprengenden Titel aufnehmen. Each CD cover has been crafted by hand to recreate the original see-through cover art. The final Doors album to feature vocalist Jim Morrison reaffirmed the quartet's grasp of blues-rock. Beset by personal and professional problems, they retreated to a rehearsal room, cast pressures aside, and recorded a handful of their most memorable compositions. The overall sound of the record is relatively stripped down, but the musicianship is uniformly excellent, with empathetic interplay between guitarist Robbie Krieger and keyboard player Ray Manzarek. Jim Morrison's voice, though somewhat ragged and weather-worn, adds its fiercely unmistakable resonance. The spooky, low-key "Cars Hiss By My Window" and an edgy cover of John Lee Hooker's "Crawling King Snake" are straight, no-nonsense blues, but the album's highlights, including the jangling radio hit "Love Her Madly" and the breezy, chugging title track, which rides on a thrumming bass line and Krieger's fluid licks, mix bluesy bluster with the Doors' swirling, poetic magic. Morrison's death within weeks of the album's completion cast a pall over its content, especially the eerie rain and the funereal electric piano of "Riders On The Storm," the album's indisputable standout, and one of the most compelling, evocative songs in the band's catalogue. Though not the Doors' finest record, L.A.
