It finally cemented her status beyond soul audiences as both a recording and live attraction, and it matched her with a phenomenal rhythm section in King Curtis and the Kingpens. Franklin adroitly mixed pop, rock, and soul material throughout the three nights, including Stephen Stills' "Love the One You're With," and Bread's "Make It With You," and the Beatles' "Eleanor Rigby," as well as tried and true favorites "Respect," "Don't Play That Song," and "Spirit in the Dark," which brought Ray Charles out of the audience for a spirited duet. It's not hard to understand why; this record is the epitome of Mathis' approach to music. Standards like "More Than You Know" and "Moonlight Becomes You" are joined by show tunes like "Hello, Young Lovers" and "Stranger in Paradise" and a few more recent titles, such as the Burt Bacharach-composed title song and "That's All." The tempos are slow, the strings swell, and Mathis' vulnerable tenor, dripping with tender emotion yet never missing a beat, soars and swoops over all. The best track, a revelation when it appeared on this album, is "Misty," a treatment of Erroll Garner's jazz piano classic with a newly added lyric by Johnny Burke. Few could have carried off that lyric (go ahead, try and think of another male singer of the '50s who could handle it), but it was perfect for Mathis, and the track was spun off for a single that became his biggest hit in two years and remains one of his signature songs. Though still fairly early in his career, Mathis had done a lot of recording; Heavenly was actually his tenth album release in less than three years (counting two hits collections and the Christmas album). As a result, he was a recording veteran while still being fresh enough to give his performances real feeling. Recorded shortly after the blistering IN PERSON, FRIDAY/SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE BLACKHAWK, SAN FRANCISCO, VOLUMES 1 & 2 (but released first), SOMEDAY MY PRINCE WILL COME captures Miles Davis and his second great rhythm section at the peak of their collective interplay. By March 1961, the rhythm team of Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb had attained a finger snapping level of relaxation and swing that was equal parts grits and grace (check out their soulful blues vamp on "Pfrancing"). They had become so attuned to each other during their tenure with Miles that they left in tandem to form the Wynton Kelly Trio--forcing Miles to search for new conscripts, precipitating his boldest period of exploration. Miles' had a penchant for turning offbeat standards and show tunes into personal jazz classics, and certainly few songs have come to be as closely identified with an artist as "Someday My Prince Will Come." From the rhythm section's evocation of a clock striking midnight and Kelly's big band-styled comping, through Miles' famous muted rendition of the theme and the contrasting tenor styles of laid-back Hank Mobley and a testifying John Coltrane, this is a defining moment in the history of jazz and the pop song form. The title tune tends to overshadow the understated power of Miles' muted horn on such exceptional ballad performances as "Old Folks," "I Thought About You" and the trumpeter's own "Drad-Dog." But it's "Teo," an extra funky, Spanish flavored vamp (shades of "It Ain't Necessarily So") that elicits the most heat from each improviser, particularly Mr. Coltrane, only months away from his own epic Iberian "Ole." ............. **************************************************************************************************** .................................. Review by Thom Jurek ........................... After both John Coltrane and Cannonball Adderley left Miles Davis' quintet, he was caught in the web of seeking suitable replacements. It was a period of trial and error for him that nonetheless yielded some legendary recordings (Sketches of Spain, for one). One of those is Someday My Prince Will Come. The lineup is Davis, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Paul Chambers, and alternating drummers Jimmy Cobb and Philly Jo Jones. The saxophonist was Hank Mobley on all but two tracks. John Coltrane returns for the title track and "Teo." The set opens with the title, a lilting waltz that nonetheless gets an original treatment here, despite having been recorded by Dave Brubeck. Kelly is in keen form, playing a bit sprightlier than the tempo would allow, and slips flourishes in the high register inside the melody for an "elfin" feel. Davis waxes light and lyrical with his Harmon mute, playing glissando throughout. Mobley plays a strictly journeyman solo, and then Coltrane blows the pack away with a solo so deep inside the harmony it sounds like it's coming from somewhere else. Mobley's real moment on the album is on the next track, "Old Folks," when he doesn't have Coltrane breathing down his neck. Mobley's soul-stationed lyricism is well-suited to his soloing here, and is for the rest of the album except, of course, on "Teo," where Coltrane takes him out again. The closer on the set, "Blues No. 2," is a vamp on "All Blues," from Kind of Blue, and features Kelly and Chambers playing counterpoint around an eight bar figure then transposing it to 12. Jones collapses the beat, strides it out, and then erects it again for the solos of Davis and Mobley. This is relaxed session; there are no burning tracks here, but there is much in the way of precision playing and a fine exposition of Miles' expansive lyricism. ........... ************************************************************************************************** ....... Review by William Ruhlmann ................... This debut album was credited to Kenny Loggins with Jim Messina because the project had begun as a solo record by Loggins being produced by Messina. By the time it was finished, however, Messina had written or co-written six of the 11 songs, contributed "first guitar," and shared lead vocals on many tracks. Messina's "Nobody but You" and "Vahevala," co-written by Loggins' second cousin, Dave Loggins, were the singles chart entries, but today everybody remembers the album for Loggins' "House at Pooh Corner," which had earned Loggins his record contract, and "Danny's Song," which Anne Murray took into the Top Ten the following year. The only thing wrong with this record is that it was too perfect — with their infectious blend of country, folk, rock and Caribbean music, L&M started out at the top of their game, and although they were able to match some of the material and performances on later records, the team never got any better than this. ................... ********************************************************************************************** LOGGINS AND MESSINA.Personnel: Jim Messina (vocals, guitar); Kenny Loggins (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Lester A. Messina's increased role on what was initially a Kenny Loggins album led to one of the most successful songwriting partnerships of the '70s.The creamy-voiced Loggins takes the lead on two of the record's most enduring numbers, "Danny's Song," later a Top 10 hit for Canadian chanteuse Anne Murray, that ranks among the definitive love ballads of the decade. And on the unabashedly sentimental "House at Pooh Corner," Loggins tunefully yearns for "the days of Christopher Robin and Pooh" in a way, one suspects, a guy could only get away with in the early 1970s. "Vahevala," Loggins & Messina's contribution to the sailor-song genre recently made popular by bands like Grand Funk and one-hit wonders Looking Glass, ranks among their most beloved tracks.
