Album Notes ............... Despite the departure of organist Matthew Fisher, Procol Harum survived, and this album is ample proof. Fisher was one of the prime architects of the Harum sound, and his work on such classics as "Shine on Brightly" and, of course, "Whiter Shade of Pale" underline that. Procol continued as a four-piece, and it was indeed a good thing that they decided not to replace Fisher. The sound of the band on this album is a bit sparser, but definitely not without dimension and dynamics. "Simple Sister," one of the finest Gary Brooker/Keith Reid compositions, is truly glorious, with Robin Trower's frightening lead guitar work juxtaposed nicely against a wonderful string arrangement. Several other tracks are first rate, including "Power Failure" and "Playmate of the Mouth." Along with Little Feat, Procol Harum was a great survivor among rock bands that lost a key member. Schade, daß Rosemary Clooney (übrigens die Tante des Hollywoodstars George Clooney) nicht regulär mit Duke's Band gesungen hat, in den letzten 25 Jahren hat sie ja auf gut zwei Dutzend Alben und verschiedenen Konzertauftritten mehr als bewiesen, daß sie eine veritable Jazzsängerin und Songstylistin ist. Gute Sängerinnen waren im Ellington-Orchester seit Ivie Andersons Ausscheiden praktisch nicht zu finden. Auch diese Platte ist nicht ganz zufriedenstellend. Zwar ist Rosie's Stimme sauber, intonationssicher und warm, aber sie kann über weite Strecken nicht mitreißen, was wahrscheinlich am fehlenden persönlichen Kontakt zwischen Sängerin und Musikern liegt. Die Band ist zwar klanglich differenziert aufgenommen worden, stellenweise (besonders bei den begleitenden Passagen) jedoch in den Hintergrund gedrängt worden; man hat den Eindruck, als spielten die Musiker am gegenüberliegenden Ende eines großen Saals. Nur Jimmy Woode's Baß tritt nach vorne. Live wären Duke und Rosie sicher ein Erlebnis gewesen, präsentiert sich hier doch die berühmte Ellington-Formation wenige Monate vor ihrem großen Triumph in Newport in bester Verfassung. Johnny Hodges, frisch zurückgekehrt, bläst hier auch auf "Passion Flower", das sonst kaum im Big-Band-Kontext zu hören war, zum Höhepunkt der Aufnahme. Auch Clark Terry liefert mit seinem Flügelhornsolo auf "It Don't Mean a Thing" ein kleines Gustostückerl ab. ............... Am besten gefallen hat mir das selten gehörte "I'm Checking Out-Goombye", das Rosemary Clooney in der ihr so typischen kräftig-fröhlichen Weise vorträgt. Leider klingt sie auf den meisten Titeln etwas farblos und ungewohnt zurückhaltend. War es der Respekt vor dem großen Namen Ellington oder Zurückhaltung, betrat sie doch damals mit dieser Platte Neuland. Darum ist es schade, daß die beiden danach nicht wieder zusammengearbeitet haben, denn die Zutaten waren ja erste Qualität, nur die Zubereitung ließ einiges zu wünschen übrig. ............... ************************************************************************************************ MEGA RARE ...............
