This three-CD box set, originally available only through QVC, starts with Willie's first single, a Hank Williams-esque original, then jumps to a sparsely arranged 1961 songwriting demo session. Nelson's considerable songwriting talents are amply evident on these obscure numbers, as is his capable singing. Hearing these, you wonder why Nelson never hit it big as a performer during the 1960's. The set then jumps to the early 1970's and Willie's albums SHOTGUN WILLIE and PHASES AND STAGES, from which numerous outtakes are included. Eleven songs from a live show in 1974 show include less frantic performances of many numbers featured on 1978's WILLIE AND FAMILY LIVE. Then comes a too-brief collection of Western Swing songs, performed in the studio with Merle Haggard's band. The box comes full circle by closing with ten Hank Williams songs, taken from a shelved tribute album. CLASSIC AND UNRELEASED should not be confused with Columbia's three-CD box REVOLUTIONS OF TIME, a conventional greatest hits package covering Willie's later career. This set is better suited to the devoted Nelson fan than to the casual listener.
