With a recording career spanning over five decades, many of his early recordings were made for EMI in the 1960s and this atmospheric recording of Spanish favourites is a splendid example. Sinfonie entstand größtenteils im Sommer des Jahres 1906. Im ersten Halbjahr 1907 wurde sie vollständig orchestriert und ins Reine geschrieben. Bei der Veröffentlichung 1910 versah Mahler das Werk mit einer Widmung an seine Frau Alma. Er spürte bereits im Schaffensprozess die Besonderheit dieser Sinfonie, die er später als sein „wichtigstes Werk“ bezeichnete. Die Niederschrift der enormen Komposition im Sommer 1906 geschah in höchster Arbeitsgeschwindigkeit. Mahler hebt hierzu hervor, dass er noch nie zuvor „unter solchem Zwange“ gearbeitet habe. Zum Entstehungsprozess bemerkt der Komponist: „Es war wie eine blitzartige Vision - so ist das Ganze sofort vor meinen Augen gestanden und ich habe es nur aufzuschreiben gebraucht, so, als ob es mir diktiert worden wäre.“[1] Die Idee, einen mittelalterlichen Hymnus als Vorlage für die neue Sinfonie zu nehmen, kam Mahler in seinem Feriendomizil in Maiernigg am Wörthersee, wo ihm ein katholisches Messbuch in die Hände fiel. Eine in Wien von Mahler nachgeprüfte, verbürgte Fassung des Hymnus enthielt deutliche Abweichungen, was zu teilweisen Umkonstruierungen der Anlage führte. Der ursprünglichen Planung, dem Hymnus insgesamt vier unterschiedliche Sätze folgen zu lassen, deren letzter eine Lobhymne auf den Eros werden sollte, folgte zunehmend die Idee, die Schlussszene des Faust von Goethe zu vertonen - ein Stoff, der Mahler sein Leben lang beschäftigte. Diese scheinbar unpassende Vereinigung zweier verschiedener Stoffe brachte Mahler häufig Kritik ein. Jedoch liegt dem Werk ein kompliziertes Verquickungssystem beider Elemente zugrunde (siehe unten). Die eigentliche Vorbereitung für die Uraufführung begann erst etwa drei Jahre nach der Fertigstellung des Werkes, im Sommer des Jahres 1910. Organisatorisch hatte sich ein Konzertveranstalter, Emil Gutmann, der Organisation angenommen, der jedoch erhebliche Probleme bewältigen musste.[2] ************************************************************************************* Was würde Mahler von uns denken, wenn wir in unseren Häusern sitzen und in einem engen Raum auf seine "Planeten und Sonnen", die sich in seiner achten Symphonie drehen, hören? Wenn jemals ein Werk für eine Ausstellungshalle zu einem besonderen Festivalanlass entworfen wurde, war es das. Das Wunder der modernen Aufnahmetechniken überträgt sich jedoch gut auf die Schallplatte und lässt immer zu, dass ein wesentlicher Bestandteil - der eines großen, von der Musik faszinierten Publikums - fehlt. Die meisten von uns, die Mahler lieben und ihn nach besten Kräften studieren wollen, haben Zweifel am Achtel gestanden; Ich ändere meine Meinung darüber und bin zufrieden damit, dies auch weiterhin zu tun. Es ist Teil eines kontinuierlichen Prozesses, um es in den Griff zu bekommen. Es ist erfreulich, aus Edward Seckersons Interview (siehe Seite 1237) zu erfahren, dass Klaus Tennstedt daran keine Zweifel hat. Er führt es in dieser Verfassung durch und er ist so überzeugend, dass er auch die Zweifel anderer wohl fegen kann. Ich kann nur sagen, dass ich, als ich diese Aufnahme zum ersten Mal hörte, tief bewegt war, fast zu Tränen gerührt. Es kommt trotz seiner immensen Größe als tief vertraute persönliche Aussage nicht nur von Mahler, sondern auch von Tennstedt selbst zum Vorschein. Natürlich gibt es auch die Solti / Decca-Aufnahme mit dem Chicago Symphony Orchestra, aufgenommen in Wien. Das ist immer noch eine erstaunliche Leistung, künstlerisch und technisch, und jeder, der es besitzt, braucht wirklich keine weitere Aufführung, sollte diesen Tennstedt aber auch haben, weil der Ansatz der beiden Dirigenten sehr unterschiedlich ist und jeder gültig und erfolgreich ist. Sie werden bei jeder Aufführung verschiedene Dinge über die Sinfonie lernen. Solti ist dynamischer. Seine letzten fünf Minuten sind apokalyptisch, während Tennstedts - langsamer aber nicht zu langsam - flehend und ekstatisch ist. Die jeweiligen Ingenieure haben den Charakter beider Interpretationen perfekt angepasst. Die Solisten und der Chor in Solti sind nach vorne gerichtet und sehr hell aufgenommen. Für Tenndstedt sind sie - wie er Edward Seckerson gesagt hatte - ein anderer und integrierter Teil der Orchestertextur. Der Effekt ist oft überragend schön. Ich habe keine Aufführung von Teil 1 "Veni Creator Spiritus" gehört, die es besser schafft, sowohl anstrengend massiv als auch lyrisch entspannt zu sein. Nehmen Sie die Passage aus Abb. 19, wo die Stimmen wie die Glocken im Orchester klingen und die zarten Figurationen der Solo-Violine wie ein Detail in einem großen religiösen Gemälde sind. Soltis Solisten sind vielleicht individuell überlegen, aber Tennstedt und die Ingenieure punkten in Teil 2 mit ihrer Platzierung von Felicity Lott, so dass das begeisterte Solo von Mater Gloriosa aus einer anderen Sphäre zu uns zu kommen scheint. Mir gefällt auch der Gesang von Doctor Marianus durch den Tenor Richard Versalle sehr. Aber der Ruhm dieser Aufnahme ist das Spielen des London Philharmonic Orchestra und der Gesang des London Philharmonic Choir und des Tiffin School Boys 'Choir. Die Holzblasensynchronisation zu Beginn des zweiten Teils ist außergewöhnlich gut und die Saiten spielen sich durchgehend ab, besonders aber aus Abb. 96 bis 100 - ist ein Reichtum und eine Zärtlichkeit, die selbst Soltis Chicagoer nicht erreichen können. Die Diktion des Chores ist hervorragend und die kontrapunktischen Passagen in Teil 1 sind klar definiert. Offensichtlich war die Entscheidung, einen kleineren Chor für Aufnahmezwecke zu haben, klug und führte zu ungewöhnlicher Klarheit auf dem Höhepunkt der Entwicklung. Und es gibt kein Opfer im Volumen - die Rückkehr des Themas "Creator Spiritus" in der Reprise ist überwältigend. Die Westminster Cathedral-Orgel wurde offenbar sehr erfolgreich in die Aufnahme aufgenommen. Solches "Schummeln" ist berechtigt, denn man muss diesen Orgelklang in dieser Arbeit haben. Tennstedts gewissenhafte Achtung der Dynamik ist ein Merkmal der Performance. Wenn Mahler pppp gefordert hat, gibt ihm Tennstedt das wirklich. Hören Sie auch auf die schöne Formulierung des Adagissimo-Themas bei seinem ersten Auftreten (Abb. 106) und die ideale Balance zwischen Chor und Harfen (die hier schön gespielt werden, wie sie im magischen Ruhig bei 197 sind). Ich könnte weitermachen, aber dies ist das Beste aus dem Tennstedt-Zyklus und eine der Mahlers der Superlative, die aufgezeichnet wurden. ' ************************************************************************************* What would Mahler think of us sitting in our homes listening in a confined space to his ''planets and suns revolving'' in his Eighth Symphony? If ever a work was designed for an exhibition hall on a special festival occasion this was it. Yet, such is the miracle of modern recording techniques, it transfers well to the gramophone record, always allowing that a vital ingredient—that of a huge audience engrossed by the music—is missing. Most of us who love Mahler and aim to study him to the best of our ability have confessed to doubts about the Eighth; I keep changing my mind about it and am content to continue to do so; it is part of a continuous process of getting to grips with it. It is gratifying to learn from Edward Seckerson's interview (see page 1237) that Klaus Tennstedt has no doubts about it. He conducts it in that frame of mind and he is so convincing that he may well sweep away others' doubts too. I can only say that when I listened first to this recording I was profoundly moved, almost to tears. It comes over, for all its immensity of scale, as a deeply intimate personal statement, not only from Mahler but from Tennstedt himself. There is, of course, also the Solti/Decca recording with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra recorded in Vienna. That is still a marvellous achievement, artistically and technically, and anyone who possesses it really does not need another performance but ought to have this Tennstedt also because the two conductors' approach is very different and each is valid and successful. You will learn different things about the symphony from each performance. Solti's is the more dynamic. His closing five minutes are apocalyptic, whereas Tennstedt's—slower but not too slow—are supplicating and ecstatic. The respective engineers have perfectly matched the character of both interpretations. The soloists and choir in Solti's are more forward and are very brightly recorded. For Tenndstedt they are—as he told Edward Seckerson he required—another and integrated strand in the orchestral texture. The effect is often surpassingly beautiful. I have not heard a performance of Part 1, ''Veni Creator Spiritus'', that better succeeds in being both strenuously massive and lyrically relaxed. Take the passage from fig. 19, where the voices sound like the bells in the orchestra and the solo violin's delicate figurations are like detail in a great religious painting. Solti's soloists are perhaps individually superior, but Tennstedt and the engineers score in Part 2 with their placing of Felicity Lott so that the Mater Gloriosa's rapturous solo seems to reach our ears from another sphere. I also very much like the tenor Richard Versalle's singing of Doctor Marianus. But the glory of this recording is the playing of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and the singing of the London Philharmonic Choir and the Tiffin School Boys' Choir. Die Aufregung und die Leidenschaft, die Bernstein Tschaikowsky mitbrachte, ist allgemein bekannt, aber was mir beim Nachvollziehen dieser Interpretationen noch stärker auffällt, ist ihre Intelligenz und Nachdenklichkeit. Zum Beispiel waren die letzten Seiten des Marche-Sklaven (beginnend mit der Hymne des Zaren) noch nie so charakteristisch. Jede Anpassung von Tempo und Phrasierung ist absolut logisch. Oder erleben Sie die Klarheit des kanonischen Austauschs zwischen tiefen Streichern und Holzbläsern in der ersten Kampfsequenz von Romeo und Julia. Der Punkt hier ist, dass Bernsteins Energie und Spontanität mit einem extrem gut geplanten und musikalisch klugen Blick auf jedes Werk einhergehen, sei es ein Potboiler wie die Overture von 1812 oder ein schwer fassbares Meisterwerk wie Hamlet. Das New York Philharmonic gibt dem Dirigenten auch 100 Prozent Mühe. Das Ensemble ist nicht immer perfekt aufgeräumt (man beachte den gelegentlich leicht abweichenden Beckenabsturz in Romeo), aber wenn Bernstein die Spieler hart treibt, wie beim wirbelnden Saltarello im Capriccio, reagieren sie mit extremer Bravour. Die Blechbläser leisten einen tollen Job und die Streicher spielen die großen Klänge mit Wärme und Intensität. c. Tschaikowsky-Sammlungen kommen und gehen, aber diese Aufführungen haben den Test der Zeit bestanden, und zusammengenommen stellen sie eine so gute Zusammenstellung dar, wie wir es zu erwarten haben. The excitement and passion Bernstein brought to Tchaikovsky is well known, but what strikes me even more forcibly on rehearing these interpretations is their intelligence and thoughtfulness. The final pages of the Marche slave, for example (beginning with the Czar’s Hymn) never have been so characterfully shaped; every adjustment of tempo and phrasing makes perfectly logical sense. Or witness the clarity of the canonic exchanges between lower strings and woodwinds in Romeo and Juliet’s initial fight sequence. The point here is that Bernstein’s energy and spontaneity go hand in hand with an extremely well planned and musically smart view of each work, whether it’s a potboiler like the 1812 Overture or a more elusive masterpiece like Hamlet. The New York Philharmonic also gives the conductor 100 percent effort. Ensemble isn’t always perfectly tidy (note the occasionally slightly “off” cymbal crash in Romeo), but when Bernstein drives the players hard, as in the whirling Saltarello in the Capriccio, they respond with extreme bravura. The brass do a terrific job, and the strings play the big tunes with warmth and real intensity. Tchaikovsky collections come and go, but these performances have withstood the test of time, and taken together they represent as fine a compilation as we have any right to expect.
