Camille Saint-Saens selbst sagte über seine Symphonie Nr. 3: „Hier habe ich alles gegeben, was ich konnte - so etwas wie dieses Werk werde ich nie wieder schreiben.“ In der Tat hört man das der spannungsgeladenen Dramaturgie des Werks, seiner fantastischen Orchestration und dem großartigen triumphalen Hauptthema sofort an. Den Beinamen „Orgelsymphonie“ verdankt das Werk der von Saint-Saens geforderten Konzert-Orgel (neben dem vierhändig zu spielenden Piano eines der ungewöhnlichsten Beispiele für die originelle Instrumentation des französischen Romantikers), die wiederum Ton-Aufnahmen dieser Symphonie zu einer echten Herausforderung für Toningenieure und Wiedergabe-Anlagen macht. Die hier vorliegende Aufnahme mit Charles Munch und dem Boston Symphony Orchestra von 1959 stellt heute noch alle anderen Aufnahmen dieser Symphonie klanglich wie musikalisch in den Schatten. Hier gibt es enorm druckvollen und doch durchhörbaren Klang, jede Feinheit von Saint-Saens großartigem Arrangement ist wahrnehmbar, und spätestens wenn im berühmten Maestoso Orgel, Klavier und Orchester das schlichte Choral-Motiv über alle kontrapunktischen und harmonischen Verwicklungen triumphieren lassen, hält es selbst den gelassensten Hörer nicht mehr still im Sessel. Out of print and growing harder and harder to find, the 180g versions are preferred by collectors over the later 200 gram pressings. ..................... Record is new and still sealed in it's original plastic sleeve. Perforation is completely intact. There are no flaws or imperfections... 100% MINT. ..................... Review: This recording was a remarkable achievement when it was released in the 1950's, and it is no less amazing today. The engineers had everything going for them: the marvelous Symphony Hall acoustics in Boston; the world's foremost conductor of French music at the time, Charles Munch; and the BSO in their glory days. ..................... The balance found between organ and orchestra is ideal and while the most obvious place to notice this is in the final movement, you can also hear the organ details extraordinarily well in the first and second movements. The whole symphony, from first to last, moves along as if it has a wonderful purpose. It is difficult for me to find any fault in this performance or recording. I'm not absolutely convinced it is the finest in the catalogue, as I really love Paray's account with the Detroit Symphony on Mercury from the same time period which can boast even more powerful organ sound and a bit more bite in final movement. However, the Detroit orchestra cannot match the BSO for beauty of sound and refinement. ..................... The Debussy and Ibert couplings are also superbly performed if not as gloriously recorded.
