In dem Album „Its Like This“ interpretiert die eklektisch arbeitende Songwriterin verschiedene Klassiker, Show- bzw.

Not since Billie Holiday has there been a vocalist who so completely transforms a song into her own. On It's Like This, eclectic folkie Rickie Lee Jones envelops standards, showtunes, '70s soul, and even slick jazz-rock, interpreting them with her familiar childlike, breathy shouts. In a very similar vein as 1991's Pop Pop, Jones pulls together a collection of diverse songs from throughout the 20th century and gives them a sparse, fragile spin, kind of like Diana Krall and Bjork sharing coffee at an all-night diner. Produced by Bruce Brody (who has also worked with Maria McKee and Bette Midler), this album is really a showcase for the dynamic vocalist - her voice pitching and yawing like a sloop far out at sea. Several notable artists scatter themselves unobtrusively throughout the album like Joe Jackson, Ben Folds, John Pizzarelli, and Taj Mahal; each lend a subtle bass line or harmony vocal, cautiously not stepping on any of Jones' delicate lines.

Album Notes: ................
Personnel: Rickie Lee Jones (vocals, acoustic & electric guitar, organ); Joe Jackson (vocals, piano); Taj Mahal, Dan Hicks, Ben Folds (vocals); John Pizzarelli (acoustic guitar); Jeff Dellisanti (bass clarinet); Alex Foster (saxophone); Conrad Herwig (trombone); Bruce Brody (organ); Richard Davis, Paul Nowinski, Michael Elizondo (acoustic bass); Carl Allen, Peter Erskine, Rick Marotta (drums). Engineers include: James Farber, Larry Alexander, Barry Goldberg.Recorded at Right Tracks Studios, Avatar Studios, and Sterling Sound, New York, New York; Conway Studios, Los Angeles, California.Though Rickie Lee Jones began her career as a highly idiosyncratic singer-songwriter, this album finds her taking on a slightly different role that began in earnest with her POP POP album; that of the interpreter. IT'S LIKE THIS consists entirely of cover tunes, all delivered in that unmistakably unique Jones style. She takes on material from several different eras of pop music here, and is to be credited for the breadth of her vision. She sounds equally at home delivering quirky, stripped-down versions of standards ("I Can't Get Started," "Someone to Watch over Me") or digging into the sleazy jazz-funk of Steely Dan ("Show Biz Kids"). Along the way, she renders a poignant version of the Beatles ballad "For No One," gets jazzy on Traffic's FM radio staple "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys," and reinvents Marvin Gaye's "Trouble Man," a tune which has also been taken on (not insignificantly) by Jones influence Joni Mitchell.
