Andre Cluytens, Spezialist für die Werke französischer Komponisten, dirigiert hier „sein“ Orchester, das Orchester des Pariser Konservatoriums, mit Werken von George Bizet, der ein knappes Jahrhundert zuvor selbst Schüler dieses Konservatoriums gewesen war. Zu hören sind seine eigene Suite aus seiner Bühnenmusik zu „L'Arlesienne“, die schon zu seinen Lebzeiten ein Erfolg war, sowie die von seinem Freund Ernest Guiraud nach Bizets Tod zusammengestellte zweite Suite aus demselben Stück. Die Suite aus den Entr'acte-Musiken zu Bizets Oper Carmen wurde, wie so viele Werke des originellen Romantikers, erst nach seinem Tod ein gewaltiger Erfolg. Cluytens und sein Orchester jedenfalls werfen sich mit Verve in die an Lokalkolorit und folkloristischem Charme reichen Orchestrationen, und liefern so eine Interpretation, die mit der manch größerer Namen mehr als nur mithalten kann. *************************************************************************************************** Rezension: Man hört dieser Einspielung an, wie sehr der Belgier André Cluytens in fast 20 Jahren mit diesem Orchester zusammengewachsen war. Cluytens lange Diskographie hat zwar einen deutlichen Schwerpunkt auf dem französischen Repertoire, doch hatte sich der Dirigent auch intensiv mit der deutschen Spätromantik befaßt – insbesondere mit Strauss und Wagner (er dirigierte 1955 sogar in Bayreuth). Und man meint hier in Bizets vermeintlich kaum verwandter Klangästhetik immer wieder Wagnersche Züge zu finden – weniger das Monumentale, sondern eher die schwebenden Klänge aus dem "Siegfried-Idyll", dem "Waldweben" oder den "Parsifal"-Zwischenspielen. Geradezu phantastisch dabei sind die Solisten des Orchesters, von Cluytens so effektvoll wie werkdienlich in Szene gesetzt – angefangen mit dem ungewöhnlichen Saxophonsolo in Prélude der ersten Suite. The Carmen Suite was assembled after Bizet's death and brought the operatic masterpiece into the concert hall. The overture is fresh and rousing, the toreador theme marches in proudly and purposefully, followed by the destiny motif in the minor key which burns itself into ones ear and mind. With every bar it becomes obvious that this suite is not so much a series of excerpts but rather the true substance of its creator's musical ideas. All that remained of the five-act play L'Arlesienne after its unsuccessful premiere was Bizet's incidental music, which he himself orchestrated lavishly and premiered with success. Similar to Carmen, popular melodies are treated with the composer's own unique style to make them ageless.
