Die Beach Boys haben es auch wahrlich verdient, dass nochmals gleichzeitig fünf ihrer Frühwerke veröffentlicht werden. Die Brüder Dennis, Carl und Brian Wilson haben zusammen mit Al Jardine und Mike Love ganz große Musikgeschichte geschrieben. Das Gefühl der Band, insbesondere das des Haupt-Kompositeurs Brian Wilson, für komplexe und gleichzeitig eingängige Melodien ist einzigartig. Auch der wundervolle Harmonie-Gesang ist outstanding. „All Summer Long“ ist das 1964er Album mit den Hits „All Summer Long“ und dem weltberühmten „I Get Around“. Klasse Fotos zieren das Cover und signalisieren die Leichtigkeit eines ausgelassenen kalifornischen Sommers. Aber lassen wir uns nicht blenden. Ganz neben dem Easy-going-Lebensstil der Surf-Freunde herrschten bei den Musikern oft Depression und Tragödien. Vielleicht sind dies aber auch die Triebfedern, die den Songs diese neben aller Heiterkeit enorme Reife und Tiefe geben. Gleich drei Scheiben aus dem Jahr 1965 liegen pressfrisch vor. „Beach Boys Party“ im edlen Klapp-Cover, „Summer Days (And Summer Nights), mit den Jahrhundert-Hits „Help Me Rhonda“ und „California Girls“ und last but not least „The Beach Boys Today“. Auf letztgenanntem Album tummeln sich Kracher wie „Do you Wanna Dance?“, aber auch unbekanntere, aber umso nachhaltigere Sound-Perlen wie „When I Grow Up“ oder „In The Back Of My Mind“. Abgerundet wird das Vinyl-Quintett von dem 1966er Meisterwerk und großartigen Konzeptalbum „Pet Sounds“. Es gilt als ihr wichtigstes Werk. Neben den klassischen Rockinstrumenten setzte Wilson hier Waldhörner, vorbeifahrende Züge und klappernde Cola-Dosen ein. „Pet Sounds“ regte übrigens die Beatles an, ihr Werk „Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band“ zu komponieren und zu veröffentlichen. Allein daran erkennt man schon die Bedeutung dieser Scheibe. Fazit: Insgesamt eine fünffach gelungene runde Sache. Es wird schwierig auszusuchen welche der 5 Platten in den Plattenschrank wandern sollen. Am besten, wenn man sich alle zulegt. "The greatest record ever made" – wenigstens im Bereich der Popmusik läßt sich da nur schwer gegen argumentieren, und wer jetzt "Beatles" sagt und "Rubber Soul", "Revolver", "Sgt. Pepper's" und "Abbey Road" anführt, hat zwar die bestmöglichen Karten auf der Hand, aber Sir Paul McCartney himself mit Sicherheit gegen sich. Die Komplexität der Arrangements bemerkt nur, wer hinter die ohrenschmeichelnden Gesangsmelodien hört. Denn "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "God Only Knows", "I Know There's An Answer" und "Caroline No" sind viel mehr als nur unsterbliche Ohrwürmer; hier wird das Popsong-Format auf ein ganz neues (und sonst eben allenfalls von den Beatles erreichtes) Level gehoben. Man höre sich nur einmal an, wie mit scheinbar ganz einfachen Mitteln das alte Folk-Traditional "Sloop John B" vom Boden abhebt. Wenn es so etwas wie einen "Mozart des 20. Jahrhunderts" gibt, dann gebührt der Titel Brian Wilson und niemand anderem. – Die Analogue Productions-Editionen bleiben natürlich erste Wahl, aber auch diese "Volksausgaben", ebenfalls alternativ in mono oder stereo erhältlich, sind den Originalpressungen und den meisten Wiederauflagen seither deutlich überlegen! For the early part of the Beach Boys' career, all of their singles were mixed and mastered and released only in the mono format — they didn't release a single in stereo until 1968. In those days, hits were made on AM radio in mono. And the mono of those times worked well for Brian Wilson — famed co-founder, songwriter and arranger — who suffers from partial deafness. Still, apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. All of the newer stereo mixes on these remastered albums (The Beach Boys Today!, Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!), The Beach Boys' Party, Pet Sounds and Smiley Smile) were all done by Mark Linett on behalf of the Beach Boys. Pet Sounds is famous for its use of multiple layers of unorthodox instrumentation as well as other cutting edge audio techniques for its time. It's considered the best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, Theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn't have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group's most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well). The spiritual quality of the material is enhanced by some of the most gorgeous upper-register male vocals (especially by Brian and Carl Wilson) ever heard on a rock record. "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Caroline No," and "Sloop John B" (the last of which wasn't originally intended to go on the album) are the well-known hits, but equally worthy are such cuts as "You Still Believe in Me," "Don't Talk," "I Know There's an Answer," and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times." Die Beach Boys haben es auch wahrlich verdient, dass nochmals gleichzeitig fünf ihrer Frühwerke veröffentlicht werden. Die Brüder Dennis, Carl und Brian Wilson haben zusammen mit Al Jardine und Mike Love ganz große Musikgeschichte geschrieben. Das Gefühl der Band, insbesondere das des Haupt-Kompositeurs Brian Wilson, für komplexe und gleichzeitig eingängige Melodien ist einzigartig. Auch der wundervolle Harmonie-Gesang ist outstanding. „All Summer Long“ ist das 1964er Album mit den Hits „All Summer Long“ und dem weltberühmten „I Get Around“. Klasse Fotos zieren das Cover und signalisieren die Leichtigkeit eines ausgelassenen kalifornischen Sommers. Aber lassen wir uns nicht blenden. Ganz neben dem Easy-going-Lebensstil der Surf-Freunde herrschten bei den Musikern oft Depression und Tragödien. Vielleicht sind dies aber auch die Triebfedern, die den Songs diese neben aller Heiterkeit enorme Reife und Tiefe geben. Gleich drei Scheiben aus dem Jahr 1965 liegen pressfrisch vor. „Beach Boys Party“ im edlen Klapp-Cover, „Summer Days (And Summer Nights), mit den Jahrhundert-Hits „Help Me Rhonda“ und „California Girls“ und last but not least „The Beach Boys Today“. Auf letztgenanntem Album tummeln sich Kracher wie „Do you Wanna Dance?“, aber auch unbekanntere, aber umso nachhaltigere Sound-Perlen wie „When I Grow Up“ oder „In The Back Of My Mind“. Abgerundet wird das Vinyl-Quintett von dem 1966er Meisterwerk und großartigen Konzeptalbum „Pet Sounds“. Es gilt als ihr wichtigstes Werk. Neben den klassischen Rockinstrumenten setzte Wilson hier Waldhörner, vorbeifahrende Züge und klappernde Cola-Dosen ein. „Pet Sounds“ regte übrigens die Beatles an, ihr Werk „Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band“ zu komponieren und zu veröffentlichen. Allein daran erkennt man schon die Bedeutung dieser Scheibe. Fazit: Insgesamt eine fünffach gelungene runde Sache. Es wird schwierig auszusuchen welche der 5 Platten in den Plattenschrank wandern sollen. Am besten, wenn man sich alle zulegt. Barbara Ann ********************************************************************************************** Um den Standards von Analogue Productions zu genügen, gab es bei der Wiederauflage der Beach Boys Alben ein zentrales Ziel: die Musik der Band so wiederzugeben, wie es der Auffassung von Brian Wilson – dem berühmten Mitgründer der Beach Boys, Songschreiber und Arrangeur – entsprach. Die Mono-Abmischungen unter Wilsons Oberaufsicht waren das Format, mit dem damals die kalifornische Surfrock-Truppe berühmt wurde! Und wir haben sie! In der frühen Phase der Karriere der Beach Boys wurden ihre sämtlichen Singles ausschließlich im Mono-Format gemixt, gemastert und veröffentlicht – die erste Stereo-Single kam erst 1968 heraus. Damals wurden Hits für das Mittelwellenradio in Mono produziert. Dem teilweise ertaubten Wilson kamen die Monoaufnahmen der damaligen Zeit durchaus entgegen. Dennoch, von »Surfin' Safari« mal abgesehen, das es nur in Mono gibt, haben die Beach Boys von all ihren frühen Alben bis 1965 Stereo-Masterbänder produziert. »Beach Boys Today« war die erste LP, für die sie nur ein Mono-Masterband einreichten. Zehn der Mono-Klassiker und am besten klingenden Beach Boy-Titel wurden von Acoustic Sounds ausgewählt und in ihrer ganzen großartigen Qualität reproduziert! These stereo mixes were created between 2005 and 2012 using the first generation basic tracking session multitracks, synced with the overdubs that were later added on second and third generation masters, to create the first true stereo mixes! Apart from Surfin' Safari, which was mono only, the Beach Boys did turn in stereo masters on all of their early albums up until 1965. The Beach Boys Today! was the first LP for which they only delivered a mono master. The stereo editions of Surfin' USA, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, Shut Down Vol. 2, All Summer Long, Beach Boys Christmas Album and Beach Boys Concert were all mixed in stereo by their own preferred engineer, Chuck Britz, ostensibly under the group's supervision. "Brian may or may not have been present for those mixing sessions — evidence suggests that he trusted Chuck's skills enough to let him prepare those mixes on his own — but the group held onto their multitrack tapes and delivered stereo masters to Capitol, rather than allowing Capitol to prepare their own stereo versions. Lofgren hielt eine enge musikalische Beziehung zu Young aufrecht; er spielte unter anderem auf dem Album und bei der Tournee »Tonight's The Night« mit. Für eine kurze Zeitspanne war er auch Mitglied von Crazy Horse, wirkte bei ihrer LP von 1971 mit und trug Songs zu derem Repertoire bei. Von '71 bis '74 war Lofgren aktiv bei Grin, der Band, die er 1969 gegründet hatte. Die gesamten Siebzigerjahre hindurch folgten alljährliche Soloalben und Tourneen, mit denen Lofgren sich als Topgitarrist und Konzertkünstler etablierte und sich den Respekt und das Lob seiner Kollegen erwarb. Bruce Springsteens Ruf an Lofgren erging 1984 und er wurde Mitglied der E-Street Band für die »Born In The USA« Tournee. Springsteens Fans waren sofort von Lofgren begeistert, einerseits aufgrund seines Spiels, andererseits wegen seiner dynamischen Bühnenpersönlichkeit. Rezension: ............ Der Mann mag als "Sideman" von erst Neil Young, dann Bruce Springsteen bekannter sein als für seine eigene Diskographie. Doch weist die durchaus Höhepunkte auf. Einen besonders starken Moment hatte der Gitarrist, als er sich – der MTV-Unplugged-Welle folgend, doch nicht in ihrem Rahmen – zu einem beinahe-solistischen Akustik-Livealbum entschloß, der nicht nur Lofgrens instrumentale Fähigkeiten beeindruckend herausstellte, sondern auch seine gesanglichen und (vor allem) songwriterischen Talente ins rechte Licht rückte. Hier erstmals auf Vinyl – und man staunt ein ums andere Mal, was auch mit einer 16-Bit-Digitalaufnahme möglich ist, wenn alles andere stimmt. Die Akustik-Gitarren so warm, räumlich und duftig und mit dem unnachahmlichen Grisp, den nur richtige gute Instrumente und Recordings haben. Das Schlagzeug von Bill Start swingt und groovt und bildet zusammen mit Charlie Haywards Bass ein spannungsgeladenes Rhythmus-Bollwerk. Das über sechs Minuten lange „Queen Of Hearts“ ist herrlich jazzig. Aufgrund der wunderbaren Aufnahme schwebt es förmlich durch den Hörraum. Das Saxofon-Solo von David Newman ist Welt(raum)-Klasse. Eine fulminant warme Orgel verzaubert „Please Call Home“ und gibt dem Song eine enorme Tiefe. „Dont Mess Up A Good Thing“ ist purer Rock And Roll, der in jede einzelne Musikfaser der Tanzbeine geht. Und Pianist Chuck Leavell, Kumpel aus der Allman Brothers Band und jetziger musikalischer Direktor der Rolling-Stones-Band, haut ein Honky-Tonk-Solo raus, dass die schwarzen und weißen Tasten nur so rauchen. Ganz ehrlich: Besser kann man eine Platte nicht einspielen, aufnehmen und mastern. Dabei ist sie so entspannt wie die Fotos, die das Klapp-Cover zieren. Das Cover kommt in super schwerem US-Karton, was der LP eine besondere Wertigkeit verleiht. Die Auflage ist limitiert. Immer nur 1000 Stück pro Pressvorgang. Hier heisst es ganz schnell zugreifen. Irgendwie hat man den Eindruck, dass John Kays Stimme mit noch weiterer Range kommt und seine E-Gitarre noch dreckiger fetzt. Goldy McJohns Orgel ist satt und warm und trägt souverän durch die Songs. Das Schlagzeug, meisterlich bearbeitet von Jerry Edmounton ist unschlagbar gut ortbar, räumlich und mit unheimlicher Dynamik. Das perfekte Re-Mastering von Kevin Gray kommt hier besonders ohrenscheinlich zum Tragen. Die Edition ist streng limitiert und wird wahrscheinlich bald vergriffen sein. Er gehört zu den ganz Großen der Country- und Western-Szene. Auch als Gospel-Sänger hat er sich einen Namen gemacht. Für seine Verdienste in Radio, Fernsehen und Musik erhielt Ford drei Sterne auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame. 1984 wurde ihm die Presidential Medal of Freedom verliehen. Im Jahr 1990 wurde er schließlich in die Country Music Hall of Fame aufgenommen. in seinem Künstler-Leben veröffentlichte Tennessee Ernie Ford über einhundert Alben. Und es ist richtige Klasse-Musik, die sich darauf befindet. Man höre sich nur „Take Me Back And Try Me One More Time“ an. Eine tiefe, ausdruckstarke Stimme fleht seine Liebste an, ihn nicht zu verstoßen. Richtig klasse die sparsame, leicht swingende Begleitung. Wunderschön sind die bluesigen Licks, die Strange immer wieder streut. „No Letter Today“ geht in die gleiche Richtung. Es sind ganz einfache Songs. Aber gerade deswegen wirken sie so nachhaltig intensiv. Man nimmt Tennessee Ernie Ford die sehnsuchtsvoll-authentische Melancholie wirklich ab. Die 200 Gramm feinstens gepresstes Vinyl machen richtig Hör-Freude. Die Songs strahlen eine solche Ruhe aus. Das ist in dieser hektischen und (auch musikalisch) hochtechnisierten Zeit eine wirkliche Wohltat für die Ohren. Das wirkt auch bei dem Song „Born To Lose“, der dem Verlierer gewidmet ist. Ob sich Lemmy von Motörhead davon inspirieren ließ? Sein Spruch „Born To Lose. Live To Win“ ist weltberühmt. Wer weiß? Sonor, unspektakulär, aber mit umso größerer Tiefe zupft Mosher seinen Kontrabass bei „Born To Lose“. Fords Stimme hat so viele feine Nuancen. Diese kommen durch die sorgfältige Editierung besonders gut zur Geltung. Man höre sich nur den plastisch-räumlichen und extrem dynamischen walking bass bei „Worried Mind“ an. Man kann wirklich meinen, der Kontrabass würde mitten im Wohnzimmer stehen. Man kann ihn nicht nur hören, sondern regelrecht spüren. Ein weiterer interessanter, tief in Moll-Akkorde getauchter Song ist „Dont Rob Another Mans Castle“. Hier spürt man auch die klassische Gesangs-Ausbildung, die Ford genoß. Er studierte am Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. Die Sound-Gourmets von Analogue Productions haben wieder einmal alles richtig organisiert. Die Lackfolien wurden von Kevin Gray von Cohearent Audio geschnitten. Selbstverständlich wurden die Aufnahmen vom Originalband gemastert. Natürlich eignete sich die Stimme hervorragend für Gospel und Kirchenlieder, aber die meisten der entsprechenden Alben leiden unter kitschigen und überfrachteten Arrangements. Wie aus dem Nichts kam daher 1964 dieses Album, auf dem Ford endlich wieder weltliches Material sang – zu minimalistischer Begleitung aus Akustikgitarre und Kontrabass (kein Schlagzeug). Lacquers were cut by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio who mastered the LP from the original tape. Plating and 200-gram pressing was by our own Quality Record Pressings, makers of the world's finest-sounding LPs noted for their superior sonics and silent backgrounds. Verantwortlich dafür zeichnen die Vinyl- und High-End-Sound-Experten von Analogue Productions. Dazu gehört, dass die Lackfolien vom Klang-Guru Kevin Gray von Cohearent Audio geschnitten wurden. Selbstverständlich wurden die Aufnahmen vom Originalband gemastert. Die Galvanisierung und 200-Gramm-Pressung wurde von Quality Record Pressings erledigt. Das Stoughton Printing Tip-on-Klapp-Cover im klassisch-historischen Outfit bildet die stilvolle Umhüllung der Schallplatte. Klar, dass die super sauber gepresste Platte in einer hochwertigen Quality-Pressings-Anti-Static-Non-Scratching-Kunststoffhülle steckt. Dazu gibt es einen vierseitigen Einleger im LP-Format mit einem höchstinteressanten Interview des damaligen Produzenten Billy Swan. Das Interview stammt vom April 2020. In der Rückschau gibt er einen profunden Einblick in diese ganz besondere Schallplatte. Ein weiteres vierseitiges Beiblatt von Acoustic Sounds verweist stolz auf die Hoch-Klang-Historie. Und dann die Musik! Stilistisch bewegt sich dieses außergewöhnliche Album im Spannungsfeld zwischen Swamp-Blues, Folk, Country-Blues, Soul und Rhythm & Blues. Klingt nach viel, trifft aber den Nagel auf den Kopf bzw. die Nadel aufs Vinyl. „Willie And Laura Mae Jones“ eröffnen das 11-Track-Album. Here, however, Jones has made a record of what sound like rough performances of musical ideas that might at some point become songs and then, with some work, acceptable recordings. As it is, the record is vague and unfocused, only aspiring to coherence when someone other than the singer/songwriter/producer is heard from, such as on the two songs co-written by Leo Kottke.
