Dass dabei meist eine spätere Generation-Bandkopie verwendet wurde, konnte man an dem schwammigen und undefinierten Klangbild deutlich hören. Ganz anders jedoch ist dieses neue Reissue geraten! Vom originalen Analogband gemastert, klingt dieser Morrison-Klassiker einfach unglaublich. Definition, Präzision, erstklassige Instrumenten- und Stimmwiedergabe sowie Räumlichkeit sind da Hi-Fidele Schlagworte, die den traumhaften Fluss der Musik nur unzureichend umschreiben. Im vermutlich schönsten Stück dieser LP, „Moondance“, entsteht ein herrlicher Bluesswing. In „Crazy Love“ haucht Morrison beinahe schon in der Manier eines „Al Green“ ins Mikro, dabei entsteht astreines Soulfeeling, was der Backgroundchor schön unterstützt. Nun aber dürfen sie wieder ein richtig rockendes Album auf den Plattenteller legen, nach dem eher ruhigen und poppigen letzten Werk eine klare „Beschleunigung“ (Accelerate), sogar der Plattenspieler darf hier auf 45 Umdrehungen hochgedreht werden! Zwar wurde klanglich das „... for maximum audiophile quality...“ des Werbestickers auf dem Cover nicht ganz erreicht, aber sehr ordentlich ist es auf jeden Fall. Immerhin machten es Michael Stipe und seine Mannen den Aufnahmetechnikern nicht leicht, denn mit rauhem Sound und lauten Gitarren werden eher bodenständige Rockfans als Klangästheten angesprochen. Zwar hat die noch im zuletzt gewohnten Popappeal gestaltete Single „Supernatural Superserious“ einen anderen Eindruck erweckt, als „Accelerate“ dann tatsächlich unter dem Strich darstellt. Doch R.E.M. haben mit diesem Album zugleich die Brücke zu ihren alten Platten geschlagen und dabei den Weg nach vorne fortgesetzt. Für viele, die die LP bereits gehört haben, zählt sie bereits jetzt zu den besten Werken dieser Band aus Athens, USA!
