Eine gute Nachricht für alle, die diese wunderbare LP von Mark Knopfler als englische Pressung von 2004 gekauft haben und sich eventuell über die nicht gerade überragende Pressqualität geärgert haben: es gibt nun eine hervorragende US-Pressung, deren Vinyl erstklassig ist. Das ist natürlich auch gleich die Nachricht für alle, die sie seinerzeit genau deshalb nicht erworben haben, nun kann man „Shangri-La“ der Musik adäquat genießen, ohne Störgeräusche! Für den erhabenen Klang dieser US-Version sorgte Stan Ricker, gepresst wurde bei RTI. Was beim direkten Vergleich zur bisherigen gewiss nicht schlechten Normalpressung auffällt, ist der etwas geringere Pegel der neuen US-Version und der zunächst zurückhaltender wirkende Klang. Dann aber merkt man doch sehr schnell, dass die Präzision der Instrumente deutlich zugenommen hat, und das, obwohl schon die englische Ausgabe scheinbar erstklassig war. Aber es geht eben besser, auch wenn wir hier von Nuancen sprechen, die nur gute Anlagen zutage fördern können. Der Unterschied hier scheint so zu sein, wie wir ihn von einer erstklassig analogen zu einer sehr guten digitalen Aufnahme kennen! Musikalisch dürfte dieses Album allen bekannt sein, Knopfler hatte bei „Shangri-La“ seine ganze Erfahrung und seinen Sinn für musikalische Ästhetik präsentiert. Wie einst bei Dire Straits ließ er den Melodien Raum zur Entfaltung, es klingt locker und unangestrengt. Knopfler hat hier einmal mehr einen Zauber in die Kompositionen gelegt, die andere Musiker selbst in ihren besten Momenten nur selten zustande bringen. Die Melodien sind im besten Sinne altmodisch und äußerst melodisch, mit stilistischen Querverweisen zu Tom Petty, Bob Dylan und auch Santana. Mit diesem Album hat Knopfler ein weiteres Meisterwerk abgeliefert, das in die Analen der Popgeschichte eingeht, und das nun auch in klanglicher und presstechnischer Spitzenform vorliegt. Erstveröffentlichung Mai 1985............................. Darauf werden wohl schon viele Popfreunde und Fans der Dire Straits gewartet haben und selbst die zwischenzeitlich von SimplyVinyl erschienene Wiederauflage konnte nicht vollends befriedigen: nun gibt es die vermutlich beste Version von „Brothers In Arms“, die als schwarze Scheibe je veröffentlicht wurde. Man begnügte sich bei Warner USA allerdings nicht damit, einfach nur ein gutes Reissue herauszubringen, sondern es sollte auch eine ganz besondere Version werden. Ganz abgesehen davon, dass man hohen technischen Aufwand trieb: Stan Ricker remasterte das Album und fertigte mittels Halfspeed-Verfahren eine neue Matrize und dehnte dabei die 9 Songs auf vier Seiten, um noch mehr Dynamik in die Rillen zu bannen. Doch wer die als einfache „normale“ Original-LP aus dem Jahre 1985 genau kennt, der wird bei dieser neuen Version nicht nur den brillanten Klang registrieren, sondern auch manche Passagen hören, die er bisher so nicht kannte. Z.B. beginnt „Your Latest Trick“ mit einem Saxofon-Intro, das die erste LP-Fassung nicht enthält und „Ride Across The River“ endet mit einem ausgiebigen Synthie- und Gitarrenklangbad weit später als die bislang bekannte Version. Auch an anderer Stelle bietet dieses Doppelalbum bislang nicht auf Vinyl gehörtes von diesem genialen Pop-Werk, so entdecken wir in „Money For Nothing“ nicht nur kurz Sting im Background-Chorus, auch die Gitarrenriffs gegen Ende des Stückes sind hier anders. Nach „Astral Weeks“ und „Moondance“ war „His Band And The Street Choir“ wieder deutlich geerdeter, es zeigt Morrison deutlich stärker R&B-orientiert. Nicht zuletzt durch die stärker präsenten Bläser ergaben sich sehr rhythmische Nummern, die Band rückte insgesamt mehr in den Vordergrund, ein Background-Chorus sorgt gar für Gospel-Atmosphäre. Der Titel der Platte kommt also nicht von ungefähr. Bis auf das Stück „Ill Be Your Lover, Too“ ist hier klanglich nichts ungewöhnliches zu vernehmen, doch diese Akustikballade macht dann wieder deutlich, wie hervorragend auch dieses Reissue gelungen ist. Insgesamt geht diese LP schon eher in die Richtung, die man auch von späteren Morrison-Platten kennt. Insofern ist das für eine Retrospektive schon überdurchschnittliche Format von fünf gut bespielten LPs (mit jeweils zehn Songs) keinesfalls zu hoch gegriffen. Die Geschichte beginnt am Anfang, zu Zeiten von Peter Green, als Fleetwood Mac Teil des britischen Blues-Booms gewesen waren. Der durchaus nicht abrupte Übergang zum großen Pop läßt sich hier in vielen Zwischenschritten nachvollziehen, ebenso wie der Aufstieg zum manchmal vielleicht zu stromlinienförmigen (aber seltenst substanzlosen) Super-Mainstream-Act. Die Geschichte ist mit dem (zweiten) Rausschmiß des langjährigen Masterminds Lindsay Buckingham nicht zu Ende, denn die eigentlichen Kapitäne des Mac-Schiffs heißen Mick Fleetwood und John McVie. Und solange die beiden weitermachen wollen, wird es eine Band dieses Namens geben. (2018) ********************************************************************************************** Goldenes Jubiläum: vom Albatross bis zum Sad Angel. Als Kapelle mit Faible für Großarenen fünf Dekaden zu überdauern, dürfte ein nicht gerade leichtes Unterfangen sein. Für Fleetwood Mac galt es seit dem Karrierestart Ende 1967 als puristischer Bluesrock-Ableger von John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers sowohl kreative Höhen wie Tiefen, aber auch zahlreiche Fluktuationen in Sachen Besetzung, diverse stilistische Häutungen sowie innerhäusliche Verwerfungen zu meistern. Zuletzt geriet die Truppe in die Schlagzeilen, als dem 1975 eingestiegenen Alpha-Rüden Lindsey Buckingham, 1987 erstmals ausgestiegen, um zehn Jahre später wieder dazu zu stoßen, von der Band gekündigt wurde. Es dürfte hier wie da noch nicht das letzte Wort gesprochen sein. Ungerührt dessen zelebriert das 3-CD- respektive 5-LP-Set 50 YEARS: DON’T STOP das goldene Jubiläum. In Chronologie kompiliert und lediglich durch zwei Livemitschnitte aufgelockert, reihen sich 50 Tracks aneinander. Aus der Ära, als Sänger und Gitarrist Peter Green das Zepter schwang, stammen einst als Singles veröffentlichte Hochkaräter wie ›Rattlesnake Shake‹, ›Shake Your Moneymaker‹ und ›Black Magic Woman‹. Nach der UK-Nummer-1 mit dem Instrumental ›Albatross‹ gelangen weitere Chartrenner wie ›Need Your Love So Bad‹, ›Man Of The World‹, ›Oh Well – Part I‹ und ›The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown)‹. In der Übergangsphase vom Green’schen Blues zum sonnigen Westcoast-Pop lieferten die Frontmänner Bob Welch, Bob Weston und Dave Walker diverse geschmackvolle 45er – allerdings ohne Chartplatzierungen. Ein Umstand, der sich erst durch Eingemeindung des anfänglichen Liebespärchens Stevie Nicks und Lindsey Buckingham änderte: Mit radiofreundlichen Ohrwürmern wie ›Over My Head‹, ›Rhiannon (Will You Ever Win)‹ und ›Say You Love Me‹ aus dem Album FLEETWOOD MAC (1975) startete jene gigantische Lawine, die sich mit Auszügen aus dem bis heute 40 Millionenmal abgesetzten LP-Bestseller RUMOURS sowie weiteren Platinalben wie TUSK (1979), MIRAGE (1982), TANGO IN THE NIGHT (1987) und BEHIND THE MASK (1990) fortsetzte. Das Konzept ging, natürlich, auf: Nie zuvor klang Tom Petty so sehr bei sich selbst, so entspannt, nie atmeten seine Songs so frei. Dabei ist der Sound nicht weit weg vom charakteristischen Heartbreakers-Klang (Benmont Tench und Mike Campbell waren ja auch mit dabei), nur schlanker und elastischer. Und die Songs! Sie flossen nur so aus Petty heraus, das gewohnte 40-Minuten-Albumformat war unmöglich einzuhalten. Ganze zehn Stücke blieben auf der Strecke, obwohl Petty das CD-Format ausreizte. Anders als viele Alben der Ära, denen eine halbe Stunde Spielzeit weniger eher guttun würde, ist "Wildflowers" aber keine Sekunde zu lang, sondern (vom klassischen Vinylformat ausgehend) ein veritables, höchst stringentes Doppelalbum ohne Filler. Daß es durchaus auch noch länger hätte sein können, zeigt diese erste vollständige Ausgabe, wobei die gestrichenen Songs komplett auf der dritten LP untergebracht sind (in diesem besonderen Falle wäre es möglicherweise interessant gewesen, sie ins vertraute Programm zu integrieren, aber das ist natürlich diskutabel). Wildflowers hat in vielerlei Hinsicht Toms künstlerisches Leben verändert – als Musiker, Kreativpartner und Band-Leader –, während eine tiefgreifende persönliche Krise die Geschichten und emotionalen Antriebe in seinen Songs beeinflusste. Am Ende schrieb Tom mehr Songs, als er zu der Zeit veröffentlichen konnte. Tatsächlich stellten Petty, Rubin und Campbell das Album als Doppel-CD mit 25 Songs fertig, nahezu zwei Stunden Musik, doch sein Label riet zur Einschränkung. Veröffentlicht am 1. November 1994, war Wildflowers – eine CD mit 15 Songs, immer noch länger als eine Stunde – Toms emotional entwaffnendstes Album und ist es bis heute geblieben. Das Wiederauferstehung von Wildflowers hat eine lange Vorgeschichte. Bereits 2014 führte Tom in einem Interview mit dem Rolling Stone seine Pläne für den Re-Issue aus: »Ich brach zu etwas anderem durch. Mein Privatleben stürzte ein und das warf mich für eine Weile aus der Bahn. Doch während der Aufnahmen war ich voll und ganz bei mir«. 2016 brachte er in seinem Tom Petty Radio bei SiriusXM den Wunsch zum Ausdruck, die »Wildflowers«-Veröffentlichung mit einer Tour zu begleiten. Tom hatte stets vorgehabt, die zweite Hälfte des Albums zu veröffentlichen – eine Sammlung namens »All The Rest« mit zehn Songs aus den »Wildflowers«-Recording-Sessions, die nicht auf der Albumversion zu finden waren, und fünf unveröffentlichten Tracks (andere Versionen von vier Songs, die 1996 auf dem Soundtrack des Films »She’s The One« erscheinen sollten). Toms Vision des Projektes wird Realität dank der Hingabe seiner liebenden Familie, Bandmitglieder und Kreativpartner, die dabei halfen, viele bisher ungehörte Juwelen zutage zu fördern. Die Stimme der jungen Sängerin Zhu Zheqin (Dadawa) klingt wie eine Mischung aus Sinead O'Connor und Björk, sie hat viel Anmut und Grazie, steckt voller Energie und Ausstrahlung. Die Musik von "Sister Drum" erscheint uns zunächst wie eine westlich orientierte Weltmusik, wie Musik zu einem Film voller opulenter Bilder (etwa 1492 von Vangelis), doch sie hat ihren Ursprung in der mythologisch-geistlichen Welt der chinesischen Mandarin.Sister Drum ist das wohl am aufwändigsten produzierte Album in der chinesischen Musikgeschichte. Es begann mit der Idee, traditionelle tibetische Musik zu modernisieren, daraus wurde eine mehr als dreijährige Mammutproduktion mit einigen der renommiertesten chinesischen Künstlern, klanglich und musikalisch wie aus einer anderen Welt. Wer bei z.B. Crossing The Ridge keine Gänsehaut verspürt, sollte dringend nach seinem Puls suchen oder seine Hifi-Anlage einem ausgiebigen Test unterziehen. Besonders die brutal angeschlagenen Drums fordern eine dynamisch potente Wiedergabe-Kette, einige Passagen wie die mit Chor und der glockenklaren Stimme Dadawas loten durch ihre komplexen Strukturen die Grenzen der Gerätschaften aus. Das Album selbst ist politisch umstritten, da es chinesische Einflüsse der Pop-Kultur mit traditionellen Werten kombiniert und Gesang in Mandarin zu den Rhythmen sich drehender Gebetsmühlen mischt. Schlussendlich sind Sängerin Dadawa und der Produzent HE Xuntian auch noch orthodoxe Christen. Den Höhepunkt dieser Diskussion bildete das Musikvideo, in dem Dadawa in Lhasa die Mauern des Palastes der 1000 Zimmer, traditoneller Wohnsitz des Dalai Lama, küsst. Album notes ........................... It's hard to be rough on an album with such a marvelous beauty to it. Nonetheless, the extremely attractive Sister Drum, which draws its inspiration from Tibetan music and settings, is on the hand a fantastic showcase for Dadawa herself and, in its own way, a travel document for the region that ignores its turbulent situation. A Chinese singer of some repute, Dadawa was approached by producer/songwriter He Xuntian to be the voice for his musical project exploring Tibetan work with an eye towards modern composition and recording. While it's a bit of a push, in ways Sister Drum is the Chinese equivalent of Enya's Watermark, an exquisite and atmospheric record drawing its roots from a non-mainstream cultural source. He's sense of arrangements is quite fine, mixing traditional Tibetan instrumentation with synths, electric guitars and technology while exercising a clear restraint throughout -- music and mood is suggested rather than fully spelled out. Indeed, there's a careful drama throughout Sister Drum that's lovely to hear and appreciate. Dadawa's vocals, sometimes full-bodied, sometimes hushed, meanwhile, suit the lonesome, meditative mood of the music, whether kept in the distance in the mix to increase the sense of soaring vistas or sitting squarely in the middle of the understated performances. When she's backed by a full choir on songs like "Sky Burial" and the soaring orchestral concluding piece "The Turning Scripture," the result is truly breathtaking. Evocative and wonderful as this album is, however, one can't help but feel that there's something troubling about it -- or more accurately, about the fact that the Chinese government's record on Tibet continues to be horrific while allowing this intentionally apolitical work to be created and marketed. The liner notes carefully emphasize questions of spirituality and native Tibetan beauty -- and it would be churlish to doubt Dadawa's sincerity regarding her lyrical sources and inspirations. Yet more than most albums, Sister Drum is one to enjoy while wondering about what hasn't been included as much as what has been. Includes liner notes by Dadawa. ............. ************************************************************************************************ Artist - Dadawa Album - 'Sister Drum' I bought the 'Sister Drum' album by Dadawa in 1996 from the HMV catalogue for no other reason than I liked the look of the cover! Fortunately, I liked it when it arrived, and it has become one of my all-time favourite albums, and one that I constantly use when assessing hi-fi, and writing my TNT reviews. Like the Paul Horn album that I wrote about, this album is comparatively unknown, and that's a great shame. It is for one thing almost unique, at least I can't think of another album that is quite like it. The artist Dadawa (real name Zhu Zheqin) is Chinese and not widely known outside of her native country, certainly at the time of the albums release in 1995. Dadawa also produces and writes songs. Since 'Sister Drum' she has travelled the world extensively, writing and producing more music that draws much from the places that she has visited. It was travelling to Tibet that inspired Dadawa to produce the 'Sister Drum' album, and not surprisingly it leans heavily on the spiritiuality of that country. Sometimes compared to Enya, she has instantly recognisable vocals that weave in and out of the songs. Sometimes she is barely whispering, and at other times, belting out her lyrics in competition with either the orchestral backing or the Tibetan drums and chanting. It's the amazing range between the quietest passages on the album, and the full-on crescendos that make it such a big test for an audio system to reproduce well. Make no mistake, on a system not up to the task, this album will probably leave the listener wondering what all the fuss is about - on a good one, it will move them between quiet contemplation and thrilling excitement. The vocals are all in Chinese which may put off some but I find not understanding them (although there are translations on the Internet) helpful in that I am not distracted from the music and Dadawa's hauntingly beautiful and melodic voice. And the 'foreigness' of the songs simply add to the charm of the album that is both mystical, spiritual and moving. When the Tibetan drums and chanting are thrown into the mix, the atmosphere becomes exciting and quite uplifiting. I would say that once heard it is something that you would never forget. It is also one of those pieces of music that is appreciated more after a few plays, and as I said at the start of this review, it is not something that ever becomes stale. 'World Music' has become so common-place these days that we can easily find other albums featuring Tibetan music and chanting. But please don't write this album off as another New Age CD, it's far more than that. Hard to find these days, and quite expensive as a result, I would still urge any music-loving audiophile to track down a copy of this album, and then find out just how good their hi-fi actually is. A quick search on Amazon shows that there are some used copies available at quite reasonable prices. Here's a taster, but trust me, until you have heard this on a good system, you won't appreciate what a truly great piece of work it is. ********************************************************************************************* ................. Fast alle japanischen LPs wurden mit einem "obi" ausgestellt - wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet dies "Flügel" und wird von der obi (Flügel) um den traditionellen Kimono Kleid getragen abgeleitet. Dieses zarte Papierstreifen, in der Regel um die linke Seite des Album-Cover umhüllt, enthält oft Marketing-Informationen und Album inhaltliche Angaben, alle in der japanischen Kanji-und Kana ~ script gedruckt. Obi Designs können so unterschiedlich sein wie die LPs . 'Hankake "(3/4 Länge Obis) sind fast unmöglich zu finden, und die' Rock Age"-Serie von OBIS sind besonders selten und wertvoll. Unabhängig von Ihrem musikalischen Geschmack, machen japanischen Aufzeichnungen eine beeindruckende Ergänzung für jede Sammlung. Die Aufnahmen dazu entstanden im Sommer 2019 bei zwei Auftritten in der legendären Düsseldorfer Tonhalle. Der Engländer Paul Dugdale, seit mehreren Jahren ein guter Freund der Band, hat die besondere Atmosphäre dieser beiden Abende mit seinem Team eingefangen und filmisch umgesetzt.
