In the early '80s, all the holdover rock bands from the '70s either made the transition splendidly, becoming bigger than ever, or crashed and burned. Longtime touring warhorse REO Speedwagon was a fine example of the former category. Having spent most of the '70s as an opening band for bigger rock acts, the group scored one of 1981's biggest hits with HI INFIDELITY. A perfect mixture of melodic hard rockers and sweet power ballads, the album finally broke REO commercially. Boston's many fans were upset that it took the band two years to follow up its monster debut. When it arrived, the sophomore effort DON'T LOOK BACK was a virtual rewrite of BOSTON. This didn't stop the masses from snapping up the album, which ultimately racked up sales in the multi-platinum range. Boston sounds inspired on the anthemic title track. Other standout tracks include "It's Easy" and "Man I'll Never Be." The hard-rocking "Don't Be Afraid" closes the album. And two years would prove to be nothing in light of the eight-year hiatus between DON'T LOOK BACK and Boston's next release, 1986's THIRD STAGE................... ********************************************************************************************** .................. Review by Tim Sendra .................. The follow-up to Boston's mega-hit first album, Boston, Don't Look Back took two long years to complete and it's hard to figure out why it took so long because it is almost exactly the same as their debut. The guitars still sound like they are being fed through computers and stacked into great walls of sound by robots, lead singer Brad Delp still sounds like he is ripping his throat out and the harmony vocals still sound like a choir of androids warbling angelically. Most importantly, the songs are overflowing with hooks, there are plenty of riffs to air guitar to, and the songs stick in your head like dirt on a dog. The main difference lies in the semi-melancholy tone of the record. Boston was a nonstop party of a record but one look at the song titles lets you know that Don't Look Back is a little different: "A Man I'll Never Be," "Used to Bad News," "Don't Be Afraid." These songs reveal a reflective side that was nowhere to be found on Boston. Not to say the record doesn't rock because it does mightily. "Don't Look Back" has a killer riff that's very similar to the timeless riff in "More Than a Feeling," "Party" is a storming rocker much like "Smokin'" and "It's Easy" is mellow 70's AOR at its absolute best. Don't Look Back is basically Boston, Pt. 2, but don't let that put you off because even though the band was treading water they were treading it like Esther Williams. This record is better than 96.7% of the AOR records released in the 1970s, combine it with Boston and you are looking at two tickets to AOR paradise. .................. **************************************************************************************************

It's also a bit of a mixed bag, occasionally falling back on material that will be familiar to fans of the James Bond movies that Barry scored during the early/mid-'60s. The main title theme uses some of those devices -- dense, heavy string passages adjacent to trumpet calls -- but it is hardly representative of the full score. The real heart of Dances With Wolves is the pensive, tragic "John Dunbar Theme," which is far closer in spirit to Barry's music for Somewhere in Time or They Might Be Giants, films (and scores) far removed from the Bond movies. It seems as though, when Barry is asked to write music for characters that are complex and troubled (of which Bond is neither), he delivers the goods in the guise of musical material that reflects those elements. Some elements familiar from the Bond films can be found scattered throughout this soundtrack, particularly the violin-driven "stings" that open "The Death of Timmons" and the horn calls that herald its closing; the string parts underneath the hyperactive percussion of "Pawnee Attack" might've been lifted right out of From Russia With Love and "Stands With a Fist Remembers," with its secondary violin part, in the upper register of the strings. Much of Dances With Wolves, however, shows a broadening of Barry's sound -- he uses the vast canvas of Kevin Costner's movie and Dean Semler's cinematography as the basis for one of the most richly scored soundtracks of his career, working with one of the largest orchestras ever heard in one of his films; "Journey to Fort Sedgewick," "Kicking Bird's Gift," "Two Socks at Play," "The Death of Cisco," and "Journey to the Buffalo Killing Ground" have an almost Copland-like majesty about them, and "The Buffalo Hunt" is one of the finest pieces of music the man ever wrote. At times, it sounds as though Barry had every string player and hornist in Los Angeles present, and topped it all out with an oversized percussion section, but none of the music or the scoring here sound excessive. Fragt man Jazzfans nach einem Meilenstein der Jazzgeschichte, so dürfte nicht selten der Titel „Kind Of Blue“ von Miles Davis fallen. Zweifellos, diese Platte ist ein echtes Meisterwerk, die Zusammenarbeit von Davis mit Stars wie John Coltrane, Bill Evans oder Wynton Kelly ist schlicht genial gewesen. Miles Davis sorgte damals mit dieser Musik auch für Innovation, besonders die ausgiebigen Soli in den eher langsameren Rhythmen waren ungewöhnlich. „Kind Of Blue“ ist ein Paradebeispiel für den modalen Jazz, Nummern wie „So What“ oder „Flamenco Sketches“ bis heue unvergleichliche Klassiker! ................Und es gilt als bislang meistverkauftes Jazzalbum überhaupt! ................. Although Toto's second and third albums (HYDRA and TURN BACK, respectively) didn't fare well commercially, especially when compared to the group's self-titled debut, 1982's TOTO IV brought the band to a whole new level of success. The cadre of Los Angeles session players pooled their talents to create a potent form of market-savvy arena rock, which resulted in the inescapable smash singles "Rosanna" and "Africa." While those two tunes, both penned (at least in part) by keyboardist David Paich, easily outshine the rest of TOTO IV, the record does feature enjoyable, upbeat songs such as "Make Believe" and "We Made It," which showcase the buoyant vocals of Bobby Kimball and the formidable ........................ *********************************************************************************************** ....................... Review by William Ruhlmann ........................ It was do or die for Toto on the group's fourth album, and they rose to the challenge. Largely dispensing with the anonymous studio rock that had characterized their first three releases, the band worked harder on its melodies, made sure its simple lyrics treated romantic subjects, augmented Bobby Kimball's vocals by having other group members sing, brought in ringers like Timothy B. Schmit, and slowed down the tempo to what came to be known as "power ballad" pace. Most of all, they wrote some hit songs: "Rosanna," the old story of a lovelorn lyric matched to a bouncy beat, was the gold, Top Ten comeback single accompanying the album release; "Make Believe" made the Top 30; and then, surprisingly, "Africa" hit number one ten months after the album's release. The members of Toto may have more relatives who are NARAS voters than any other group, but that still doesn't explain the sweep they achieved at the Grammys, winning six, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year (for "Rosanna"). Predictably, rock critics howled, but the Grammys helped set up the fourth single, "I Won't Hold You Back," another soft rock smash and Top Ten hit. As a result, Toto IV was both the group's comeback and its peak; it remains a definitive album of slick L.A. pop for the early '80s and Toto's best and most consistent record.
