Dirigent: Fritz Reiner ................ 1958 entstand diese Aufnahme von Modest Mussorgskys „Bildern Einer Ausstellung“ mit dem Chicago Symphony Orchestra unter Fritz Reiner, und bis heute zählt sie zu den gelungensten audiophilen Einspielungen des Werkes überhaupt. Die Fassung, die hier aufgenommen wurde, ist die von Maurice Ravel orchestrierte - und bei diesem legendären Arrangement lohnt sich jeder noch so große Aufwand bei der Aufnahme, um beste Klangqualität zu erreichen, denn Ravels besonderes Ohr für facettenreiche und volle Orchesterklänge ist bis heute unerreicht. Dass die Grundlage dieser unglaublich abwechslungsreichen Orchestrierung tatsächlich nur ein simpler Klavier-Auszug war, mag man kaum glauben. In der Aufnahme von Fritz Reiner lebt Ravels vielfarbig gemaltes Klangbild bis in jedes kleinste Detail - selten ist diese zu Recht weltberühmte Kooperation zweier der größten Komponisten ihrer Zeit so gut eingespielt worden. ........................ ******************************************************************************************* Rezension: Nicht nur mit Recht eine der ganz großen RCAs, sondern vor allem bis heute und trotz einer kaum überschaubaren Zahl von Mitbewerberinnen eine echte Referenzeinspielung. Natürlich ist da auch noch die legendäre Leibowitz-Einspielung im Rennen, gibt es Szell, Muti, Toscanini, Markevitch, Dutoit und viele andere – aber dennoch: Was Fritz Reiner hier seinem Chicagoer Orchester abverlangt hat, grenzt ans Übermenschliche und zählt ebenso wie seine "Scheherazade" oder der 1954er "Zarathustra" zu den Sternstunden nicht nur dieser Interpreten-Kombination, sondern der Schallplattengeschichte schlechthin. – Schon die Classic Records-Ausgabe war klanglich absolut überragend; von einer unglaublich präzisen Dynamik vor allem in den tieferen Lagen, die man so auf einer (ohnehin unbezahlbaren) Originalpressung nicht fand. Mastering ist diesbezüglich nicht weniger beeindruckend – bei noch ausgewogenerem Gesamtklangbild… **************************************************************************************** Background - Frederick Martin "Fritz" Reiner (December 19, 1888 – November 15, 1963) was a prominent conductor of opera and symphonic music in the twentieth century. Hungarian born and trained, he emigrated to the United States in 1922, where he rose to prominence as a conductor with several orchestras. He reached the pinnacle of his career while music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in the 1950s and early 1960s. Reiner was born in Budapest, Austria-Hungary into a secular Jewish family that resided in the Pest area of the city. After preliminary studies in law at his father’s urging, Reiner pursued the study of piano, piano pedagogy, and composition at the Franz Liszt Academy. During his last two years there, his piano teacher was the young Béla Bartók. After early engagements at opera houses in Budapest and Dresden, where he worked closely with Richard Strauss, he moved to the United States of America in 1922 to take the post of Principal Conductor of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. He remained until 1931, having become a naturalized citizen in 1928, then began to teach at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where his pupils included Leonard Bernstein and Lukas Foss. He conducted the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1938 to 1948 and made a few recordings with them for Columbia Records, then spent several years at the Metropolitan Opera, where he conducted a historic production of Strauss's Salome in 1949, with the Bulgarian soprano Ljuba Welitsch in the title role, and the American premiere of Igor Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress in 1951. He also conducted and made a recording of the famous 1952 Metropolitan Opera production of Bizet's Carmen, starring Rise Stevens. The production was telecast on closed circuit television that year. At the time of his death he was preparing the Met's new production of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung. In 1947, Reiner appeared on camera in the film Carnegie Hall, in which he conducted the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as they accompanied violinist Jascha Heifetz in an abbreviated version of the first movement of Tchaikovsky's violin concerto. Ten years later, Heifetz and Reiner recorded the full Tchaikovsky concerto in stereo for RCA Victor in Chicago. Reiner's music-making had been largely American-focused since his arrival in Cincinnati. But after the Second World War he began markedly increasing his European activity. When he became music director of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in 1953 he had an international reputation. By common consent, the ten years that he spent in Chicago mark the pinnacle of his career, and are best-remembered today through the many recordings he made in Chicago's Orchestra Hall for RCA Victor from 1954 to 1963. The first of these—of Ein Heldenleben by Richard Strauss—occurred on March 6, 1954 and was among RCA's first to use stereophonic sound. His last concerts in Chicago took place in the spring of 1963. He also appeared with members of the Chicago Symphony in a series of telecasts on Chicago's WGN-TV in 1953-54, and a later series of nationally syndicated programs called Music From Chicago. Some of these performances have been issued on DVD. The videos clearly show his stern, disciplined demeanor, but at the conclusion of a piece, Reiner would turn to the audience and smile at them as he bowed. Reiner was especially noted as an interpreter of Richard Strauss and Bartók and was often seen as a modernist in his musical taste; he and his compatriot Joseph Szigeti convinced Serge Koussevitzky to commission the Concerto for Orchestra from Bartók. In reality, he had a very wide repertory and was known to admire Mozart's music above all else. Reiner’s conducting technique was defined by its precision and economy, in the manner of Arthur Nikisch and Arturo Toscanini. It typically employed quite small gestures — it has been said that the beat indicated by the tip of his baton could be contained in the area of a postage stamp — although from the perspective of the players it was extremely expressive. The response he drew from orchestras was one of astonishing richness, brilliance, and clarity of texture. Igor Stravinsky called the Chicago Symphony under Reiner "the most precise and flexible orchestra in the world"; it was more often than not achieved with tactics that bordered on the personally abusive, as Kenneth Morgan documents in 2005 biography of the conductor. Chicago musicians have spoken of Reiner's autocratic methods; trumpeter Adolph Herseth told National Public Radio that Reiner often tested him and other musicians. ******************************************************************************************** RCA Victor Living Stereo has done it again! This LP/RECORD is a true classic. It is a fine overview of great Russian music from earliest classical period up to the 20th century. Russian music has always been up there with the most exciting, most passionate, most sensuous ever written. This disc is an outstanding example of that fact. Modest Mussorgsky's two great works, Pictures at an Exhibition and Night on Bald Mountain, are fine examples of fiery music which can't fail to move you. The Overture from Glinka's Russlan and Ludmilla and Kabalevsky's Coles Breugnon Overture add to the passion and excitement as do all of the selections on this outstanding disc. Not to be overlooked by any means is the fantastic job the Fritz Reiner and the CSO do in presenting this music. Reiner is far and away my pick as the most outstanding maestro of the 20th century, and he sculpted the Chicago Symphony into one of the greatest orchestras ever. They are at the peak of their artistry in this recording. Reiner had a rare gift for this Russian music, and it is truly evident in his work here. I would be remiss if I did not mention the quality of the sound on this magnificent recording. The whole series of Living Stereo LP´s is remarkable for its sound, and this one will certainly not disappoint. It is a sonic treat. Finally, the liner notes leave nothing to be desired. They offer an insight to Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition of which I was entirely unaware. Wie einige Audiophile sich bewusst sind, klang Classic Record LP Titel, die auf 180 Gramm Vinyl (oder weniger Gewicht) ausgegeben wurden, viel besser als die späteren 200 Gramm Versionen des gleichen Titels. Anscheinend hat dies mit den Vinylpressen zu tun, die verwendet wurden, um die LPs zu machen, wenn sie auf 200 Gramm Vinyl umgestellt wurden. Diese Maschinen wurden nie eingerichtet, um die extra dicken, 200 Gramm Platten von Vinyl zu behandeln. Und um einfach von 180 auf 200 zu schlagen, war es sehr problematisch. Das Vinyl war laut. Es gab dringende Mängel. Alles in allem ein minderwertiges Produkt im Vergleich zu dem etwas weniger schweren, aber viel besser klingenden 180 Gramm Vinyl. Classic Records kam mit allen Arten von Varianten für ihre 200 Gramm Pressungen - erinnern Sie sich das alles? Wenn du diese Periode gelebt hast, fragst du dich wahrscheinlich, warum es so viele Versionen derselben Musik gab, die von der gleichen Firma in etwas anderen Vinyl-Gebräu gemacht wurde! Es war einfach, dass die 200 Gramm-Versionen den früheren Pressungen auf 180 Gramm Vinyl unterlegen waren. Dies ist der Grund, warum die 180 Gramm-Versionen nicht nur viel mehr kosten, um jetzt zu erwerben, aber sie taten in der Tat viel besser. How rare and valuable are each one of these titles now still Factory Sealed Priceless!............................. ******************************************************************************************* Background on Classic 200g Super Vinyl Profile In 2003, Classic Records launched its now famous Signature Blue Note Mono reissue series. As part of that series Classic developed an "authentic" 200 gram LP profile that replicated that of an original Blue Note record from the 1950's. Comparing a test pressing on the new profile versus the same title on the normal 180 gram pressing it was discovered that the 200 gram version sounded significantly better. The 200 gram pressing sounded louder, with more definition and solidity of notes across all frequencies and there was more detail - particularly low level detail like room or hall sounds, pages being turned, musicians whispering and automobile sounds outside the studio all became easier to identify. At first it was speculated inside Classic Records that the extra weight resulted in the better performance as no one could come up with a better answer given that the stampers were the same as well as the vinyl pellets used on both 180g and 200g pressings. One day, Michael Hobson, the founder of Classic Records was discussing this unexplainable sonic discovery with the Legendary Mastering Engineer and Sheffield Records founder, Doug Sax when Doug, without hesitation stated "Ah Michael you've discovered the difference in a flat versus conventional profile". Puzzled, Hobson asked for an explanation which Sax described as going all the way back to 1950's mono pressings and what happened when stereo records came out in the early 1960's. Sax explained that in the 1950's when mono records had no vertical modulation (only lateral), pressing PolyVinylChloride PVC (plastic) records were more easily pressed on "Flat Profile" dies fitted to the pressing machines since the grooves on the mono stampers were all the same height (no vertical modulation). The molten vinyl was able to flow evenly across the stampers and fill properly during the molding (pressing) of the record. The problems started when stereo record cutting came into vogue producing stampers that had variable height grooves sticking up across the diameter of each stamper. Using the older mono pressing dies resulted in tremendous problems getting the areas between grooves of different heights to fill properly - a groove that is in front of another taller one often got passed over by the flowing molten vinyl resulting in "non-fill" which was audible and thus a "defective" record. Pressing plants don't like to press defective records and are always looking for high pressing yields or a s few rejects as possible. To solve the problem, the engineers developed a new pressing die profile which tapers from the center of the die, flattens in the middle of the diameter and then tapers again toward the outside of the die. The new profile was "concave" rather than flat. When you put a flat stampers onto the concave dies the stampers distort and are no longer flat - the grooves are no longer perpendicular across the stamper and by association across a finished vinyl pressing. This new die profile created "back pressure" on the flowing vinyl and solved the "non-fill" problem with stereo pressings and resulted in higher yields which was great for pressing plants and good for record companies who wanted good prices on pressings. The problem was and still is that the new profile records don't sound as good as they could because they are not flat across their profile. Using a micrometer across the diameter of a 1950's mono records reveals that the thickness is virtually the same across the record's diameter from center label to outer edge but not so for a newer stereo profile pressing which is convex across its diameter resulting from the concave profile dies / distorted stampers. This is the dirty little secret that Classic had rediscovered was known to old school experts like Doug Sax who founded Sheffield Labs in the 1970's. After the discovery, Classic Records never looked back and all of its releases and re-pressings after 2003 were on the new 200 gram Flat Profile dies that were specially made for Classic. Some years later Classic discovered that the very same profile was used by JVC in Japan to produce the legendary UHQR pressings for Mobile Fidelity which are well known to sound better than the conventional Mobile Fidelity pressings of the same titles - it all makes sense now. Wie einige Audiophile sich bewusst sind, klang Classic Record LP Titel, die auf 180 Gramm Vinyl (oder weniger Gewicht) ausgegeben wurden, viel besser als die späteren 200 Gramm Versionen des gleichen Titels. Anscheinend hat dies mit den Vinylpressen zu tun, die verwendet wurden, um die LPs zu machen, wenn sie auf 200 Gramm Vinyl umgestellt wurden. Diese Maschinen wurden nie eingerichtet, um die extra dicken, 200 Gramm Platten von Vinyl zu behandeln. Und um einfach von 180 auf 200 zu schlagen, war es sehr problematisch. Das Vinyl war laut. Es gab dringende Mängel. Alles in allem ein minderwertiges Produkt im Vergleich zu dem etwas weniger schweren, aber viel besser klingenden 180 Gramm Vinyl. Classic Records kam mit allen Arten von Varianten für ihre 200 Gramm Pressungen - erinnern Sie sich das alles? Wenn du diese Periode gelebt hast, fragst du dich wahrscheinlich, warum es so viele Versionen derselben Musik gab, die von der gleichen Firma in etwas anderen Vinyl-Gebräu gemacht wurde! Es war einfach, dass die 200 Gramm-Versionen den früheren Pressungen auf 180 Gramm Vinyl unterlegen waren. Dies ist der Grund, warum die 180 Gramm-Versionen nicht nur viel mehr kosten, um jetzt zu erwerben, aber sie taten in der Tat viel besser. Als Sammler werden Sie wahrscheinlich versuchen, ein paar Versionen selbst zu sehen, ob Audiophile sich einfach vorstellen würden, was sie hörten - das ist Ihre Chance, einen solchen Titel zu erwerben. Das ist nicht nur insofern fragwürdig, als daß das Werk musikalisch das mit Abstand uninteressanteste in dieser Sammlung ist – es erwies sich auch kommerziell als fatal. Denn beinahe zeitgleich brachte die Konkurrenz von Mercury die legendäre 1812-Aufnahme mit echten Kanonen auf den Markt, bekanntlich ein Stück HiFi-Geschichte und ein Riesenhit. Die Reiner-LP erwies sich als Ladenhüter und verschwand alsbald aus dem Programm. Als dann die Sammlerschaft erkannte, was sie verpaßt hatte (denn LSC-2241 zählt zu den klanglich sehr großen RCAs), war’s zu spät – und die Preise für die wenigen Originale schnellten in die Höhe. Die Hebriden-Ouvertüre tauchte immerhin Jahre später auf der sagenhaften Victrola VICS-1424 (gleichfalls als Classic Records-Wiederauflage erschienen!) wieder auf. Die versteckte Perle der LP ist neben jener sicherlich Reiners Aufnahme von Brahms’ “Tragischer Ouvertüre” – ein Werk, das auf einer solchen Kopplung eigentlich nichts verloren hat. Anscheinend hat dies mit den Vinylpressen zu tun, die verwendet wurden, um die LPs zu machen, wenn sie auf 200 Gramm Vinyl umgestellt wurden. Diese Maschinen wurden nie eingerichtet, um die extra dicken, 200 Gramm Platten von Vinyl zu behandeln. Und um einfach von 180 auf 200 zu schlagen, war es sehr problematisch. Das Vinyl war laut. Es gab dringende Mängel. Alles in allem ein minderwertiges Produkt im Vergleich zu dem etwas weniger schweren, aber viel besser klingenden 180 Gramm Vinyl. Classic Records kam mit allen Arten von Varianten für ihre 200 Gramm Pressungen - erinnern Sie sich das alles? Wenn du diese Periode gelebt hast, fragst du dich wahrscheinlich, warum es so viele Versionen derselben Musik gab, die von der gleichen Firma in etwas anderen Vinyl-Gebräu gemacht wurde! Heifetz war an der Geige ein echter Universalkünstler. Technically, it is extremely difficult, and contains a musical sophistication that is quite staggering. The symphony was offered to the jury of the Leningrad Conservatory as his graduation exercise! Even today, the wealth of invention continues to amaze, more so when one recognizes that young Shostakovich's unique musical voice was already formed - a voice that continued to speak and develop in all his work, one representative of the essence of the gigantic struggles of the Soviet people. ................. This particular recording of the work is splendid. In fact, Jean Martinon and the London Symphony Orchestra present one of the finest renditions. Their personification of style, interpretation and ensemble are a trinity of near perfection. From the opening clarinet solo (Gervase de Peyer, perhaps?) to the closing orchestral fortissimos, the late fifties LSO shines gloriously. Strings have a beautiful golden sheen, woodwinds glow and brass resonate thrillingly. And the recording - simply spectacular! The Decca-sourced RCA displays Kingsway Hall to perfection, with its requisite Holborn/Aldwych "tube" rumble. By this account, London Transport were on time, the regular deep growling adding visceral pleasure to the audiophile need quotient. ................. As a filler, the Ballet Suite from The Age of Gold is representative of Shostakovich at his sarcastic best. The piquant orchestration is, again, performed with reckless abandon by the virtuosos of the London Symphony, with the famous oblique-styled Polka played especially well. ................. James Walker and Alan Reeve get the somewhat tricky acoustics of Kingsway just right. Imaging and the soundstage are exemplary, both adding to the splendor of the presentation.
