Doch nicht nur in klanglicher Hinsicht ist diese SACD etwas Außergewöhnliches, die Musik ist ebenfalls auf sehr hohem Niveau. Stellen Sie sich die Stimme von Cassandra Wilson in Verbindung mit dem elitären Musikstil vor, der ECM berühmt machte, dann hat man so etwa das Bild dieser Platte. Dies ist Vokaljazz von hoher Ausdruckskraft und Individualismus, wobei es in Anbetracht der künstlerischen Qualität überrascht, daß dies erst die zweite Einspielung der Sängerin Patricia Barber ist. Patricia Barber, who is both a fine keyboardist and an atmospheric singer, contributes roughly half of the material to her Premonition debut. Her dark voice and the generally esoteric program takes awhile to get used to (listeners will have to be patient), but after two or three listens, this thought-provoking and rather moody set becomes more accessible. The music ranges stylewise from sophisticated pop sensitivities to the avant-garde and even touches of minimalism, while not fitting securely into any category. Barber gives a new slant to "The Thrill Is Gone," "Ode to Billy Joe," and even "A Taste of Honey," and her vocals are all quite haunting and contemporary. Dies liegt schon mal an der Tatsache, dass Hayes von den drei bis vier Minuten langen Songs abkam und die Platte nur mit vier Songs füllte: "Walk on By" (12:00 min), "Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic" (9:36), "One Woman" (5:08) und "By The Time I Get To Phoenix" (18:40)! In Verbindung mit der Rhythmusgruppe The Bar-Kays, Background-Chorus und Streichern entstand ein Soulalbum zwischen sentimentalen Soulballaden und groovig-funkigen Songs, teils mit Gospelanklängen. Following his Chicago sabbatical of 1955-56, Sonny Rollins was spiritually and physically rejuvenated. And on this date, he's clearly inspired by Max Roach and Clifford Brown's depth of spirit. Multi-dimensional re-arrangements of popular songs were a Brown-Roach trademark. "Kiss And Run" is treated to a stop and go intro, then settles into a brisk 4/4, as Rollins, Brown and the perenially underrated Richie Powell fashion long dancing lines. "I Feel A Song Coming On" creates tension by alternating a vamp figure with a swinging release. Rollins takes an immense solo, contrasting chanting figures and foghorn-like long tones with Parker-ish elisions, and Brown answers with buzzing figures and daring harmonic extensions. Then Roach takes things out with sweeping melodic choruses and polyrhythmic fanfares, setting the stage for a torrid tenor-trumpet duel. On "Valse Hot," we have an early example of a successful jazz waltz as Rollins offers up one of his most charming themes. Die Truppe von Blood, Sweat & Tears waren schon kurz nach Ihrem erfolgreichen Erstlingswerk nur noch zu sechst. Man war auf der Suche nach einem neuen Lead-Sänger und Verstärkung für die Bläser Sektion. Dabei waren gerade die Bläser ein wichtiger Teil von BST, denn man wollte nicht etwa den "Jazz-Rock" vom Miles Davis kopieren, sondern "Rock-Jazz" betreiben und die damaligen Jazzer spielten nicht selten als Tanzkapelle in Clubs. .......................................... Ein Sänger wurde im kanadischen Sänger Clayton-Thomas gefunden. Seine Stimme war Drummer Bobby Colomby in einem Rock-Club in New York aufgefallen. Er kam zum Vorsingen und war nach dem ersten Song engagiert. Auch die Bläsersektion wurde alsbald mit Lew Soloff und Chuck Sinfield durch zwei Trompeter aufgestockt. Auch Jerry Hyman kam mitsamt seiner Posaune dazu. Die neuner Truppe spielte mit viel Freude in einem Übungsraum im Greenwich Village im ersten Stock des Garrick Theater. Selbst an heissen Sommertagen sammelten sich unter den Fenstern Menschentrauben um einfach zuzuhören. Als die Band an einem kleinen Plakat am benachbarten "Café Au Go Go" ihren ersten Live Auftritt ankündigte bildete sich eine Schlange rund um den gesamten Block. Jeder hatte vom neuen Sound in Greenwich gehört. Im Bonus-Teil dieser SACD sind auch zwei Aufnahmen von den ersten gemeinsamen Auftritten 1968 enthalten. ........................................... Das Erstlingswerk von Edgar Winter und Band aus dem Jahr 1972 sollte eigentlich eine sichere Bank mit tollen Hit-Singles wie "Free Ride" und "Hangin' Around" werden. Doch das Album floppte, bis eine B-Seite eines Instrumentalstückes sich über College Radios zum Hit entwickelte und das Album zum Doppel-Platinum Titel wurde. Dieses Instrumentalstück hatte eigentlich keinen Namen und wurde gerne Live in Varianten zwischen 12 und 15 Minuten gespielt. Da man am Anfang der 70er gerne mit laufendem Band aufnahm und die Edgar Winter Band im Studio dieses namenlose Stück gerne zum Warmspielen nutzte, gab es diverse Bandmitschnitte. Der Produzent Rick Derringer wollte gerne noch einen weiteren Titel für das Album haben und schlug gemeinsam mit Tontechniker Bill Szymczyk (der später einmal "Hotel California" für die Eagles aufnehmen sollte) vor, doch das Instrumentalstück neu zusammenzuschneiden. Es wurde also das Masterband mittels Rasierklinge wild zerschnippelt und wieder zusammengesetzt. Nach zwei Tagen war der Song von guten 14 Minuten auf unter 5 Minuten geschrumpft und hatte etwa 150 Klebestellen im Band. Schlagzeuger Chuck Ruff sass fasziniert vor der Bandmaschine, die sich durch die Klebestellen kämpfte und sagte die berühmten Worte: "Mann, das sieht aus wie Frankenstein." Und so bekam der ehemals namenslose Song seinen Namen. Und es sollte wirklich ein Mostersong werden. ...........................................
