Im Jahr 1962 lud der von Dizzy Gillespie entdeckte Vibraphonist Milt Jackson seine Kollegen Kenny Dorham (Trompete), Jimmy Heath (Tenor-Saxophon), Tommy Flanagan (Piano), Ron Carter (Bass) und Connie Kay (Schlagzeug) zu einem All-Star-Sextett ein. Diese Kombo spielte in einer dreitägigen Session für das Label Riverside die LP Invitation ein. Jackson, der seine professionelle Musikerkarriere zunächst als Sänger eines Gospel-Quartetts begann, hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt bereits mit Jazz-Größen wie Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, Howard McGhee und seinem Förderer Gillespie zusammengearbeitet und war seit 1952 mit dem Modern Jazz Quartett erfolgreich. Somit spielte er trotz der anderen Hochkaräter hier eine Führungsrolle............................................................................ Vor Jackson gab es eigentlich nur zwei bekannte Vibraphonisten: Lionel Hampton und Red Norvo. Milt Jackson überholte sie beide: nicht nur in ihrer Bedeutung für den Jazz, auch in Hinblick auf die Popularität. Über fünfzig Jahre spielte er (Spitzname: Bags) erfolgreich und Bob, Blues oder Balladen. Jackson veränderte die Einstellungen des Motors seines Vibraphons so, dass er ein langsameres Vibrato bekam und das Instrument dadurch einen expressiven, schimmernden Klang hervorbrachte. .................................................................................................. Jetzt könnte man diese Aufnahmen als MFSL Hybrid-SACD sogar fast als audiophile bezeichnen. So rasant geht es selten zur Sache. Ein Jahr nach dem Debut „Surfer Rosa" produziert Gil Norton das zweite Album der Pixies, das diesmal deutlich zugänglicher ausfiel. Der Sound ist noch immer dreckig, schnell und von unverständlichem Gesang bestimmt. Doch Charles Thompson alias „Black Francis" hatte diesmal Hit um Hit geschrieben: „Debaser", „Waves of Mutilation", „Here Comes Your Man" und „Gouge Away" - um nur einige zu nennen. Den britischen NME (New Musical Express) hat dies so nachhaltig überzeugt, dass es „Doolittle" zum zweitbesten Album aller Zeiten ernannt hat. .................................. From the opening bars of DOOLITTLE, the Pixies' brilliant duality comes into focus. Chiming guitar streaks waft over an AOR-ready riff, while vocals bark out references to a deliberately obscure culture. "Debaser," for instance, finds singer/songwriter Black Francis alluding to "Chien Andalou," Spanish director Luis Bunuel's surrealist film renowned for a scene where an eyeball is sliced. The Pixies' calling card is their calculated sonic mayhem. Francis and bass player Kim Deal weave vocal harmonies of inimitable dissonance as guitarist Joey Santiago's leads ring like air-raid sirens. DOOLITTLE perfectly captures The Pixies' refusal to be categorized into one form of musical identity. The album's most gorgeous melody is wrapped around the words "cease to exist, giving my goodbye," and crowned with the title "Wave Of Mutilation." The rest of the album follows suit, and even the love songs bear Francis' warped humor, boasting titles like "Tame" and "Dead." DOOLITTLE is quintessential Pixies. Pepper, Art - The Way It Was (SACD) .......................................... Es gibt Alben die vergessen werden. Es gibt Aufnahmen die nie erscheinen. Und manchmal gibt es den besonderen Fall, dass sich ein Musiker einiger alten Aufnahmen erinnert und darauf besteht, das diese Veröffentlicht werden. 16 Jahre lang lagerten die Bänder dieser Aufnahme von 1956 in den Archiven bis sie 1972 endlich auf Vinyl erschienen, weil Art Pepper darauf bestand. Da die Jam Session mit Warne Marsh (Tenor Saxophon), Ronnie Ball (Piano), Ben Tucker (Bass) und Gary Frommer (Schlagzeug) jedoch mit nur vier Stücken zu kurz für ein Album war, entschied man sich bei Contemporary Records noch einige Hits von Art Pepper in alternativen Versionen beizugeben. So erleben wir noch Red Garland und Wynton Kelly an den Pianos. Trotz des erheblichen Alters klingt die Aufnahem kein bisschen belegt oder veraltet, sondern so, als ob sich echte Profis zusammen gesetzt haben um den Sound der späten 50er noch einmal neu zu beleben. Dies ist die erste MFSL Aufnahme mit Rob LoVerde als Tonigenieur. Ein absolut gelungener Einstand! Dieser Titel ist auf eine Stückzahl von 2.500 weltweit begrenzt und mit fortlaufender Seriennummer versehen! ................................................................. Titel 1. Despite his very erratic lifestyle, altoist Art Pepper never made a bad record. This collection is better than most. The first four titles team together Pepper with tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh, pianist Ronnie Ball, bassist Ben Tucker, and drummer Gary Frommer for generally intriguing explorations of four standards. One can feel the influence of Lennie Tristano (with Pepper in Lee Konitz's place), although Pepper had his own sound and a more hard-swinging style. The success of the Pepper-Marsh front line makes one wish that they had recorded together again. The other three selections are leftovers from a trio of classic Pepper albums, and all are quite worthwhile. Pepper is heard backed by three separate rhythm sections, which include pianists Red Garland, Dolo Coker, or Wynton Kelly; either Paul Chambers or Jimmy Bond on bass; and Philly Joe Jones, Frank Butler, or Jimmy Cobb on drums.
