To mine as much material as possible from those nights the performances were run more like recording sessions than live shows, with the crowd reverently hushed. Patricia Barber is in her element and the only thing that seems to have suffered for the recording circumstances is the album's length -- at seven songs and 40 minutes, it walks the line between standard EP and full-length size. One surmises that it might have been longer had there been more album-quality material from the performances. Recalling the energy that was present on her critically worshipped Caf‚ Blue album, there is an ease and creativity on Companion which makes her fans' devotion understandable. Barber has been criticized for being a jazz singer in the loosest sense -- her style borrows heavily from R&B and she often covers pop songs (Sonny Bono's "The Beat Goes On" is a sheer stylish delight), and her song "If This Isn't Jazz" answers that criticism with a thumb to the nose. What many critics fail to notice, however, is the strength of her musicianship. Sexism within the industry keeps many from seeing female jazz performers playing roles other than those of vocalists -- Barber's warm, breathy voice and creative phrasing are wonderful, for sure, but what really shines are her arrangements. With a talented band behind her, on Companion Barber has made magic with her compositions, her piano playing, and yes, her voice. Die ersten Aufnahmen wurden im Jahr 1968 von George Mitchell auf analoges Tonband gebannt. Im weiteren bestand das Aufnahmeequipment aus einem Schuppen und viel billigem Rum. ............... Burnsides dynamische Stimme, sein Fußstapfen und seine Gitarre zeigen was 35 Jahre hartes Leben am nördlichen Mississippi bewirken. Das Album beginnt mit dem langsamen und melancholischen “Bird without a feather” in dem Burnside besingt wie sehr er sein Mädchen vermisst. Im Song erfahren wir dann, dass er sie selbst umbrachte, da sie ihm nicht treu war. Jetzt, nach seiner Verurteilung ist zu Hause nicht mehr wo es einmal war. “Home ain’t where it used to be.” Von dort aus geht es auf den Zug gen Süden. Weg aus dem Norden zurück in die Heimat. Wahrscheinlich wurde dieses Stück durch Burnsides kurze Zeit in Chicago inspiriert, wo er innerhalb eines Monats Bruder, Vater und Onkel verloren hatte. Während des Stückes meint man das Rumpeln der Eisenbahn zu hören, die einen selbst zu sich nach Hause bringt. Nicht zu verachten sind auch die Monsterslides, die Burnside beständig über die Seiten wandern läßt. Wer Muddy Waters mag, der wird Burnside begeistert aufnehmen. ................................... Die Alben von 1957 und 1958 verhalfen dem "kleinen Richard" zum Weltruhm und sind von den analogen Masterbändern neu bearbeitet. Das Inlet enthält beide Coverabbildungen zum umdrehen ganz nach Bedarf. Richard Penniman wurde am Weihanchtstag 1935 in eine Familie 14 Kindern in Macon, Georgia geboren. Er war immer kleinwüchsig und wurde daher von Familie und Freunden "Little Richard" genannt. Der kleine begann im Alter von sieben Jahren an Straßenecken zu singen und investierte seine Pennies in Klavierstunden beim Pianisten des Kirchenchores. Mit den neuen Fertigkeiten heuerte er bei einer reisenden "Medizinshow" an und unterhielt die Leute um danach heilsame Kräutertinkturen zu verkaufen. Damit liessen sich unschlagbare zwei Dollar pro Nacht verdienen. Er entwickelte seine eigene Mischung aus Jazz, Blues und Gospel und sein erste Aufnahme "Tutti-Frutti" verschaffte ihm den ersten Flug seines Lebens. Es ging in ein echtes Studio in Hollywood. Und dort nahm er nicht nur sein erstes Album auf, sondern sollte bald darauf auch als Sänger in Hollywood Filmen auftauchen. Immerhin hat es der kleine Richard inzwischen auf 1,80m gebracht und setzte diese ein, wie kaum zuvor ein Klavierspieler oder Sänger. Coleman Hawking war DER Tenor Saxophonist der goldenen 20er Jahre der USA. In den 30er war er eine Hauptfigur in der Swing Street von New York. In den 40er Jahren war er ein Mentor und Erfahrunspool für eine ganze Generation. 1957 machte er dann dieses Album mit der Erfahrung von gut und gerne 40 Jahren auf der Bühne mit einem handverlesenen Ensemble........................................ Dieses Ensemble durfte sich "der Hawk" selbst aussuchen und traf einige unkonventionelle Entscheidungen. Er wählte J.J. Johnson für die Posaune. Er galt als ungekrönter König diese Instruments und die Entscheidung für Ihn war nichts ungewöhnliches............................. Der Trompeter Idrees Sulieman hingegen war nie zu großem Ruhm gelangt, aber spielte schon ähnlich lange wie der Hawk und galt als Fels in der Brandung. Hank Jones war weitesgehen unbekannt. Er spielte zwar seit Jahren das Piano für Studioproduktionen, war aber kein Name, der Platten verkaufte doch aufgrund seines Gefühls für die Rhythmussektion bestand Hawkins auf ihm am Klavier. Barry Galbraith ist ein Gitarrist aus Fernseh- und Radioproduktionen und hatte somit eigentlich gar keinen Namen im Bereich des Jazz und die Gitarre als Instrument selbst war eine unkonventionlle Besetzung für die Rythmussektion. Beim Bassisten Oscar Pettiford besann er sich dann wieder auf einen der bekannten Kollegen. Schlussendlich wird der Bassist Jo Jones zuletzt genannt. Dieser war jedoch von besonderer Bedeutung denn als Mitglied von Count Basies Big Band wusste er, wie man eine Combo zusammen hält.
