Guitarist Jim Hall is the sort of musician who displays such technical expertise, imaginative conception, and elegance of line and phrase that almost any recording of his is worth hearing. Still, CONCIERTO ranks among the best albums of his superb catalogue. For starters, the personnel here is a jazz lover's dream come true. Paul Desmond (saxophone), Chet Baker (trumpet), Roland Hanna (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums) are on board, creating--along with Hall--one of the highest profile lineups ever put to tape. Yet CONCIERTO is not about star power and showboating. As subtle, nuanced, and considered as any of Hall's output, CONCIERTO's ensemble playing demonstrates great group sensitivity and interplay, giving precedence to mood and atmosphere over powerhouse soloing. Commercially, this was a disappointment after Blood Sweat And Tears' previous eponymous album, which spawned hit singles galore; here, only a sprightly cover of Goffin-King's "Hi-De-Ho" and lead singer David Clayton-Thomas' own "Lucretia Mac Evil" achieved singles chart success. On the other hand, this is probably the most musically ambitious of the band's post-Al Kooper albums, and though it occasionally overreaches--the lengthy jazz suite based on the Stones' "Sympathy For the Devil" is an awkward collision of styles--there are some memorable moments. Clayton-Thomas works a little too hard sometimes (the aforementioned "Lucretia Mac Evil" is a tad overwrought), but he also turns in sensitive readings of some fine cover songs, particularly Laura Nyro's "He's a Runner" and Richard Manuel's "Lonesome Suzie." Meanwhile, the band's instrumental work is at its customary expert level throughout, in particular in a protracted solo section in Joe Cocker's "Something Comin' On." ......................... Few debut singles in the history of rock & roll have had the immediate and overwhelming impact of The Byrds' version of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man." Marrying a Beatles-like electric jangle to Dylan's insight and folky melody (in many ways, breaking Dylan into the pop market), it not only forecast the band's influence on the future of pop music but reestablished an American rock & roll presence in the face of the British Invasion. The album of the same name, released in June of 1965, was a shotgun blast before the canon roar that Dylan's HIGHWAY 61 REVISITED (released just two months later) would become. As much as Bob Dylan was an overwhelming influence on the young Byrds--four of the twelve tracks on MR. TAMBOURINE MAN were Dylan songs--his contributions were only a part of what made the band special. The chiming sound of McGuinn's 12-string guitar was the group's backbone, characterizing The Byrds' presence in a way few rock instrumentalists had done until then. Gene Clark proved to be a mighty songwriter in his own right--"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" has stood the test of time better than any other track here. Yet, what distinguished The Byrds and MR. TAMBOURINE MAN most was that they couldn't be easily pigeonholed. Combining disparate musical backgrounds and openly reconstructing everything from a British wartime standard ("We'll Meet Again") to a Jackie DeShannon pop tune ("Don't Doubt Yourself, Babe") in their own open-minded image, the Byrds kicked down the door to a new sound called folk-rock. Building on the maturity of their previous effort YOUNGER THAN YESTERDAY, the Byrds delivered a suite of songs that naturally flow into one another with uncanny ease. It is one of the few vinyl releases where both sides would always be played, and 30 years later it begs to be heard uninterrupted--played individually, the songs lose their power. This was an artistic triumph and a commercial disappointment, as the memory of Crosby faded only to be replaced (allegedly) by a horse on the album sleeve. Darin spielt Harvey Keitel einen frustrierten Plattenmanager, der drittklassige Stars für ein großes Label zum Ruhm bringen soll. Als der eine kleine, aber dummerweise komplett schwarze Gruppe entdeckt und diese fördern möchte, wird ihm dieses untersagt. Dem amerikanischen Traum folgend macht er sich selbständig und führt die Gruppe gegen alle Widerstände in die Charts. Der Titel, frei übersetzt "Das ist eben der Lauf der Dinge" ist eine Anspielung auf der Erklärung des grossen Plattenchefs, warum er keine schwarze Band gebrauchen könnte. Am Ende des Filmes wird dieser Satz dann von Harvey Keitel verwendet um der Plattenindustrie zu erklären, dass die bessere Musik sich eben durchsetzt. ........................................... Scott Hamilton hatte eigentlich ganz anderes zu tun, als ihn 1986 ein Anruf von Carl Jefferson von Concord Records ereilte. Er nahm gerade ein eigenes Album auf und sollte ausserdem noch bei einem Tributalbum mitspielen. Und jetzt das Angebot als erster ein Album in einer neuen Serie mit Gerry Mulligan aufzunehmen. Ein klarer Fall von gerne doch. Wie in solchen Fällen üblich hatte die Sache natürlich einen Haken. Es sollten nicht irgendwelche Jazz Standard gespielt werden, sondern vornehmlich Eigenkompositionen Mulligans. Dieser schrieb diese unmittelbar vor den Proben und brachte sie Scott Hamilton bei, der so seine Schwierigkeiten mit Noten hatte. Als dieser dann am nächsten Tag das Stück im Kopf hatte, war es von Mulligan schon wieder abgeändert worden. Aber irgendwas ist ja immer. This sax summit from the Concord catalog, recorded in January of 1986, is an audiophile delight. Mobile Fidelity has produced one of the most natural sounding jazz releases in their history. Thankfully the original analog master tape was in perfect condition when MoFi got a hold of it. The original 30ips master certainly didn't hurt their chances of producing a stunning release. Hear Gerry Mulligan's baritone front left and Scott Hamilton's tenor front right, as if they are in the room with you. The great rhythm section stands behind the soloists with bass dead center in the soundfield. The piano is extremely well recorded and Grady Tate's drumming is absolutely fabulous. But on Soft Lights & Sweet Music, it's the horn players who really get to shine. Philly Joe's soulful, stylish command of the drum set's technical demands (his remarkable coordination, touch and speed of hand) and his wily command of time demonstrate why he is venerated as an innovator. Philly Joe played right on top of the beat, sometimes spilling over ahead of it.
