Der relaxte kalifornische Sound erinnerte schon damals an die Eagles auf einer Party und tatsächlich ist der Bandname ein dezenter Hinweis auf Personen, die sich dem Marihuana Konsum hingeben. Der Sound der Doobie Brothers ist eine Mischung aus Rock, R'n'B und sogar ein paar karibischen Einflüssen. Die gesamte Mischung ist ausgesprochen frohgemut und dürfte den Musikfreunden ein wohliges Grinsen ins Gesicht treiben. Besonders der Klassiker „Listen to the Music" und der Hit „Jesus is Just Alright" sind Garant für vergnügliche Stunden. Snake Man Album notes The Doobie Brothers shuffled personnel a bit after their debut album, changing bass players and adding a second drummer. For whatever reason, this sophomore effort was the one that kicked off their long streak as one of the most popular bands in America. The basic sound of TOULOUSE STREET isn't really all that different from the Doobies' previous effort. There's a similar mix of acoustic guitars, gospel harmonies, and overall post-hippie mellowness. This time out, however, the songs have hooks as well as grooves. TOULOUSE STREET produced the chugging and eminently infectious "Listen to the Music," the Doobies' breakthrough hit single. Other highpoints include the anthemic "Rockin' Down the Highway," which quickly became a radio staple; a considerably juiced-up version of the Byrds' "Jesus is Just Alright;" the lovely, CSNY-inspired title song; and a nice cover--with horns--of Sonny Boy Williamson's blues classic "Don't Start Me Talkin'." Producer Ted Templeman gave the band a cleaner, harder-edged sound, and helped bring the band's unique mix of roots rock, gospel, country, jazz, bluegrass, R&B, swamp boogie, and pop hooks into perfect focus. **************************************************************************************************

Die Doobie Brothers waren keine Brüder und hießen auch nicht Doobie. Das Gespann startete 1969 unter dem Bandnamen Pud im kalifornischen Club Chateau Libert und taufte sich ein Jahr später nach dem Slangwort für Marihuana-Zigaretten (Doobie) um. Nach Kiffermusik klang der Sound der Doobies jedoch nie. Das Album „The Captain And Me“ gilt als das konzentrierteste und vielseitigste der Gruppe, das stilistisch irgendwo zwischen den Allman Brothers und den Eagles liegt. Schon das erste Stück „Natural Thing“ zeigt, wie gefälliger Vokal-Folk und elektrische Gitarrenriffs zu ehrlichem Rock verschmelzen. It's clearly a transitional album, and a pretty big departure from the band's original style. You can hear the new direction most clearly on the album's two hit singles--the title tune and "It Keeps You Running." The closing track "Carry Me Away" marks the first appearance of the see-saw keyboard riffs later immortalized in "What A Fool Believes" (and later ripped off to good commercial effect by various MacDonald wannabes like Robbie Dupree). Juli 1968 die Music aus Big Pink, der bezeichnende Name des Gebäudes in dem das Album geschrieben wurde, veröffentlichte war unklar was zu erwarten war. Die ehemalige Supportband von Bob Dylan kreierte einen Sound, der durchaus Einflüsse des ländlichen Lebens hat, jedoch auch eine düstere Qualität von Unsicherheit und Verzweiflung in sich trägt. Heute gilt das Album als wegweisend und wird von Fans als eine Sternstunde der Rockmusik bezeichnet. Eine Sternstunde mit prominenter Orgel. Die Produktion erinnert eher an eine Jam-Session guter Freunde als an ein produziertes Album einer professionellen Band und war damals ein absoluter Gegenpol zu der Perfektion einer „Sgt. Pepper" der Beatles. Da aber zuvor ein Bob Dylan seine Fans schon mit einer elektrischen Gitarre geschockt hatte, ist es kaum verwunderlich, dass auf diesem Album die ultimative Version von „I Shall Be Released" enthalten ist. Im Jahre 1971 erschien mit Cahoots das vierte Album von The Band. Der englische Begriff „to be in cahoots" kann man dabei am einfachsten als „mit jemandem unter einer Decke stecken" übersetzten und in diesem Fall steckt man mal wieder mit Bob Dylan unter einer Decke. Dieser beeinflusste seine Begleitband kräftig und steuerte auch den Song „When I paint my masterpiece" bei. Auch Van Morrison ist mit einem Duett vertreten. Das vierte Album wurde häufig übersehen da die Bildsprache der Texte nicht ganz so ausdrucksvoll war, wie von der Band erwartet. Much anticipated upon its release, it can now be appreciated as the fragmented work that it is. Having set impossibly high standards with their previous releases, they were bound to teeter, and they did. But even when falling short of their masterpieces MUSIC FROM BIG PINK and THE BAND, they are still a powerful force to be reckoned with, and CAHOOTS yields its share of rewards. "Life Is A Carnival" began their association with Allen Toussaint--his horn arrangements led to a full-blown collaboration on the live ROCK OF AGES the following year--and the result is a burbling piece of funky country pop. Bob Dylan's "When I Paint My Masterpiece" is premiered here (Dylan later released his version on his GREATEST HITS VOLUME II) with a lovely accordion and mandolin arrangement. Other highlights include the Richard Manuel-Van Morrison duet on "4% Pantomime" and one of their most overlooked songs, the hauntingly beautiful "The Moon Struck One." CAHOOTS lacks the consistency of the Band's best work, but is still a fine effort by one of the era's most influential bands. **************************************************************************************************

Long before they became The Band, these four Canadians and one southern rebel rocked the rooftops off Canada as The Hawks, Ronnie Hawkins's fierce back-up band. Their non-stop performing took them through nearly every bar in the region, and the group developed into a tightly wound rock unit. It is therefore interesting that, as The Band, the group was known more for its reluctance in the live arena than for its live prowess. This was in part due to leader Robbie Robertson's stage jitters, which seemed to worsen as The Band's status swelled. ROCK OF AGES provides a telling account of what glorious heights The Band was capable of when it tore loose onstage. Here the five members function as one shifting, interlocking force, summoning Americana, phantom soul, and barroom rockers with ease and freedom. Garth Hudson conjures pure organ voodoo with an impromptu instrumental, "The Genetic Method," before the band launches into the otherworldly "Chest Fever." When this album was released in 1975 it was The Band's first album of new material in four years. Though the intervening period had brought forth the brilliant ROCK OF AGES live album and an exuberant set of covers, MOONDOG MATINEE, nay-sayers feared The Band were buying time and that their creative well had perhaps run dry. NORTHERN LIGHTS, SOUTHERN CROSS was greeted as a triumph and a return to form after the less focused CAHOOTS. With only eight songs, they let the mood of each find its true and proper length. From the sly "Ophelia" to the evocative "Acadian Driftwood," the songs embrace character and a sense of place in the best possible ways. "It Makes No Difference" shows their perfect sense of knowing which of their three fine singers to use for each type of song. And the playing is, as always, exemplary.

They look confident, knowing that their follow-up is almost as good as the debut. Chrissie and Ray Davies were stepping out at this time, hence the opening track, "The Adultress," as Hynde whispers her confession over a furious wall of sound, to be immediately followed by her reminder that "Bad Boys Get Spanked." If only Chrissie, if only. The album drives and dives, pausing for "I Go To Sleep," another old Ray Davies song.
