"I Robot“ aus dem Jahr 1977 war das zweite Album des britischen Progressive-Rock-Duos The Alan Parsons Project, und es war die perfekte Fortsetzung des Überraschungserfolgs ihres Debütalbums „Tales Of Mystery And Imagination“. War der Erstling eine musikalische Umsetzung von Werken Edgar Allen Poes, so stand für „I Robot“ ein anderer Schriftsteller Pate, nämlich der Science-Fiction-Autor Isaac Asimov, der in seiner Roboter-Trilogie philosophische Fragen über künstliche Intelligenz auslotet. Songs wie „I Wouldnt Wanna Be Like You“ oder „Genesis Ch.1, V.32“ setzen diese Betrachtungen mit großer Eindringlichkeit fort. Der Sound dieser frühen Parsons-Project-Alben erinnert noch stark an Pink Floyd, hat aber mehr Rock-Drive und knappere, poppigere Songs. Es wurde das Meisterwerk des Projects, dessen Chef hier nicht nur abermals sein untrügliches Gespür für Soundästhetik (kaum eine LP mit Synthesizer-Pop aus dieser Ära ist so problemlos gealtert wie diese!), sondern auch seinen Sinn für Dramaturgie unter Beweis stellte. Daß er nicht nur für hochartifiziellen Prog-Pop gut war, sondern auch jeder Zeit einen Hit aus dem Ärmel schütteln konnte, bewies er mehr im Vorbeigehen (mit "I Wouldn't Want To Be Like You"). Natürlich ein Basis-Album jeder Rocksammlung: Das zweite Airplane-Album, erstmalig mit Grace Slick als Leadsängerin, ist letztlich das bedeutendste, auch wenn vieles davon bereits im Debüt angelegt war. Slick hatte von ihrer gerade aufgelösten Ex-Band The Great Society nämlich zwei Songs mitgebracht, deren Hit-Potential sich nun entfalten konnte: "Somebody To Love" und "White Rabbit". Beide stellten sich schnell als die definitiven Hymnen der Psychedelia heraus (und sind's noch heute); "Surrealistic Pillow" war damit das erste Album der jungen Bewegung, das in oberste Chartsregionen vordrang und damit in der amerikanischen Popmusik buchstäblich das Unterste zuoberst kehrte. Das Grund-Quintett aus Slick, Marty Balin, Paul Kantner, Jorma Kaukonen und Jack Casady wurde hier übrigens noch um Jerry Garcia ergänzt, dem auf dem Cover die Rolle als "musical and spiritual advisor" zugewiesen wird. Ersatz war jedoch schnell gefunden und fortan übernahm Spencer Dryden, Neffe von Charlie Chaplin, das Schlagzeug und Grace Slick den Gesang. Slick, die bis zu deren Auflösung bei The Great Society gesungen hatte, brachte gleich zwei Songs ihrer Ex-Band ins Repertoire von Jefferson Airplane ein, welche bis heute untrennbar mit diesen verbunden sind: Slicks hypnotisches "White Rabbit" sowie das von ihrem damaligen Schwager stammende "Somebody To Love". Laut Rolling Stone Magazine zwei der "500 Greatest Songs Of All Time" und deren Verwendung in zahlreichen Soundtracks ("The Game", "Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas", "The Cable Guy", "Sopranos",...) spricht für sich. Doch "Surrealistic Pillow" bietet nicht nur durchgehend weitere Hits wie "3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds" oder "Plastic Fantastic Lover", sondern fasziniert vor allem durch seine besondere Atmosphäre und der bis dato einzigartigen Melange aus psychedelischem Rock und Folk. Zwei Jahre nach ihrem bahnbrechenden Psychedelic-Rock-Album »Surrealistic Pillow« veröffentlichten die Musiker aus San Francisco 1969 mit »Volunteers« so etwas wie ein Manifest der Gegenkultur. Tief verwurzelt in dem Glauben, dass Musik die Welt verändern könne, thematisierten die Lieder auf »Volunteers« den Vietnam-Krieg, Politik, Gier und Umweltzerstörung und riefen zur Revolution auf. Die Texte sorgten für Kontroversen und Jefferson Airplanes Plattenfirma RCA wollte das Album zensieren. Fans der Dire Straits und Kenner der großartigen Remasterings von MFSL warten schon lange auf dieses Reissue, und jetzt ist es endlich hier: das selbstbetitelte Debüt-Album der Dire Straits von 1978, remastered auf zwei Scheiben mit 45 rpm. Es ist eine Band-Geschichte wie aus dem Bilderbuch: Mark Knopfler, Journalist, Kunstlehrer und ambitionierter Hobby-Musiker, frisch geschieden und finanziell in schweren Nöten („in dire straits“, wie die Engländer zu sagen pflegen), zog vorübergehend bei seinem Bruder David ein, in dessen Wohnung in London auch schon Bassist John Illsley wohnte. Man kann sich den weinseligen WG-Abend bestens vorstellen, an dem diese drei beschlossen, eine Band zu gründen. Schnell war mit Session-Drummer Pick Withers der vierte Mann gefunden - ein echter Glückstreffer - und mit geliehenem Geld ein Demo-Tape mit selbst geschriebenen Songs aufgenommen. Nachdem dieses einige Absagen kassieren musste, gab Knopfler es einem Londoner Radio-DJ, mit der Bitte um konstruktive Kritik. Der aber verliebte sich in den Song „Sultans of Swing“, spielte ihn in seiner Show - und der Rest ist Geschichte: Chart-Erfolge, weltweite Tourneen, Grammy-Gewinne, und eine der erfolgreichsten Singles aller Zeiten. Aber „Dire Straits“ ist mehr als nur „Sultans of Swing“. „Down To The Waterline“, „Setting Me Up“, „Wild West End“, „Six Blade Knife“ - hier reiht sich ein grandioser Song an den nächsten. Knopflers erzählerische, dylaneske Texte, seine zurückhaltend heisere Stimme, sein unverwechselbarer geschmeidiger Gitarrenstil in Verbindung mit der Rhythmusgitarre seines Bruders, das alles funktionierte beim Debüt schon ungeheuer elegant und souverän. Als das Album 1978 erschien, tobte in England gerade die Punk-Welle, und der zurückhaltende, lakonische Sound der Dire Straits, der sich eher an Blues, Folk, Country und handgemachtem Roots Rock orientierte, schien so überhaupt nicht in die Zeit zu passen. Doch der Band war das egal, und der Erfolg sollte ihnen recht geben. Auch heute noch begeistert dieser spezielle, unverwechselbare und hemmungslos ehrliche Sound. Im Remastering, das Krieg Wunderlich für MFSL besorgte, kann man darin regelrecht baden. Jedes Instrument in den nicht durch unnötige Overdubs verunstalteten Band-Arrangements ist perfekt durchhörbar, und die Finesse des Zusammenspiels der vier Musiker ist einfach nur zum Genießen. Das Duo aus Bass und Drums kommt herrlich druckvoll und warm, darüber erheben sich die Gitarren crisp und kristallklar. Das Album kommt auf zwei 180 g schweren Scheiben mit 45 rpm - Platz genug für exzellente Klangqualität! Dazu noch im Klappcover mit fortlaufender Seriennummer, und das ganze in streng limitierter Auflage. Da muss man definitiv zuschlagen! Cale da und noch lange davor Chet Atkins. Aber in der britischen Pub Rock-Szene war dieser reduzierte Sound, dieser Minimal-Blues Rock etwas völlig Neues. Offenbar traf die Band einen Nerv damit: Die Debüt-Single "Sultans Of Swing" schaffte die Top Ten und wurde zum Instant-Klassiker, das dazugehörige Album war nicht weniger erfolgreich. Kaum eine LP eignet sich so hervorragend zum Anlage Testen wie dieses fantastische Album, das nun bei MFSL als 45-rpm-Fassung remastert wurde. „Communique“ erschien 1979 als zweites Album der Dire Straits, nach dem Überraschungserfolg ihres selbstbetitelten Debüt-Albums. Die Besetzung der Band war im Wesentlichen die gleiche geblieben, und obwohl auf einigen Tracks Produzent Barry Beckett alias „Boby Bear“ in die Tasten greift, lebt auch „Communique“ in aller erster Linie von dem herrlich transparenten und auf den Punkt gebrachten Band-Sound des Quartetts. Mindestens genau so wichtig aber war Mark Knopflers lyrisches Songwriting, das auch auf dem zweiten Album eine ganze Reihe von Songperlen hervorbringt. "Once Upon A Time In The West" klingt so unnachahmlich dynamisch und räumlich, dass man aus dem Staunen gar nicht mehr herauskommt. Übrigens war das Lied in der DDR angeblich verboten, weil die Behörden dachten, der Titel bedeute, dass bei den DDR Bürgern irgendwann der Freiheitsdrang Richtung Westen geweckt werden würde. So enthält der Song ein Maximum an Dramaturgie. Dave Knopflers sauber gespielte Rhythmus-Gitarre verschmilzt kongenial mit de Solo-Gitarre von Mark Knopfler. Illsleys Bass kommt dank der hervorragenden Pressung voll zur Geltung. Er erscheint federnd präzise und versinkt doch gleichzeit in den Welten Poseidons. Das Schlagzeug von Pick Withers verfügt über eine erstaunliche Räumlichkeit, die die Dynamik erst richtig zum Aus-Druck bzw. Vor-Klang bringt. "Where Do You Think Youre Going" beginnt mit einer warmen Akustik-Gitarre. Einprägsame Hooklines legen sich in die Gehörgänge und verhindern so leicht das Vergessen. Eine zarte E-Gitarre verstärkt nochmal diesen Ton-Tiefgang. Das zweite, 1979 erschienene Album enthält mit “Lady Writer“ einen richtigen Welthit. So viel Groove, soviel Kraft steckt in diesem Song. Intensiv der Gesang von Mark Knopfler. Wie ein Uhrwerk funktionieren in harmonischer Symbiose Bassist John Illsley und Drummer Pick Withers. Schön der herrliche melodisch verwinkelte Titeltrack. Ein kraftvolles Honky Tonk Klavier spielt Barry Backet. Die beiden Brüder Mark und Dave Knopfler holen alles aus ihren Fender Stratocastern heraus. Durch die hervorragende Pressqualität, die fantastische Aufnahme und das Abspielen mit 45rpm klingt diese MSFL Produktion im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes in jeder Hinsicht unerhört. Der Opener "Telegraph Road" zeigt mit seinen über 14 Minuten deutlich in Richtung Prog Rock (freilich mit reichlich Folk- und Blues-Einflüssen), die übrigen vier Songs schlagen auch mit knapp sechs bis acht Minuten zu Buche. Daß die Band in den zwei Jahren seit "Making Movies" aber auch das Rocken nicht verlernt hatte, zeigte der auf den Punkt gespielte Titelsong; "Private Investigations" mit zarter spanischer Gitarre bewies das ungebrochene Hit-Potential (Platz zwei der britischen Pop-Charts). Der Klang-Schatz ist nicht nur aufpoliert, nein, er klingt zum ersten Mal richtig gut. So wie es diese klasse Musik auch verdient hat. Schon beim Opener fühlt, spürt und erhört man das gelungene Re-Mastering. "I Looked Away" wird getragen von einer grenzenlosen Relaxtheit und den wunderbaren Voices von Eric Clapton und Bobby Whitlock. Der Jahrhundert- Song "Bell Bottom Blues" geht so unnachahmlich über das Ohr direkt in das Herz. Clapton's Gitarre schwebt herrlich über der Orgel von Bobby Whitlock. Die Rhythmusgruppe aus Bassist Carl Radle und Drummer Jim Gordon federt und groovt so, dass man sich dieser hochmusikalischen Magie einfach nicht entziehen kann. MFSL hat den Spagat zwischen klarer, präziser Ortbarkeit der einzelnen Stimmen und Instrumente und der geschlossenen Wärme und Luftigkeit gekonnt geschafft. Und wenn dann noch Duane Allman bei "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out" oder der Clapton-Komposition "I 'm Yours" die Slide-Gitarre tanzen lässt, bleibt kein Auge mehr trocken. So ein Gefühl wie es Allman mit seiner E-Gitarre und dem Bottleneck umsetzt, ist wirklich einzigartig.
