Japanische Pressungen sind gleichbedeutend mit Qualität - das Vinyl glänzt wie kein anderes Vinyl .
Die Klangqualität der japanischen Pressungen gilt als eines der besten in der Welt und darüber hinaus sind sie wunderschön präsentiert,
In der Regel sind die Cover auf eine bessere Qualitätmit schwerem Papier gedruckt und oft auch einen Bonus lyrischen Einlage mit zwei Sprachen Japanisch & englische Text . Fast alle japanischen LPs wurden mit einem "obi" ausgestellt - wörtlich übersetzt bedeutet dies "Flügel" und wird von der obi (Flügel) um den traditionellen Kimono Kleid getragen abgeleitet. Dieses zarte Papierstreifen, in der Regel um die linke Seite des Album-Cover umhüllt, enthält oft Marketing-Informationen und Album inhaltliche Angaben, alle in der japanischen Kanji-und Kana ~ script gedruckt.

Viele Einspielungen dieser Frühwerke, bei denen man zwar deutlich den Einfluß von Schumann und Brahms hört, die aber auch schon manches von der typischen Tonsprache des Komponisten (hier noch keine 20!) haben, gibt es nicht. Diese hier mit Hélène Salome am Bösendorfer ist überdies interpretatorisch hervorragend. Sehr rare französische LP, Cover mit geringen Lagerspuren, LP neu. Originalpressung, ca. 1979. Schostakowitschs dunkles zweites Violinkonzert gepaart mit Tschaikowskys Klassiker in einem intimen Bericht über eine Neuauflage
Der Geiger Linus Roth hat seine LP mit konzertanten Werken von Mieczysław Weinberg mit einem Konzert von Weinbergs Freund Dmitri Schostakowitsch fortgesetzt. Auf Challenge Records paaren Linus Roth, das London Symphony Orchestra und der Dirigent Thomas Sanderling Schostakowitschs Violinkonzert Nr. 2 op. 129 mit Tschaikowskys Violinkonzert op. 35, wobei der Tschaikowsky in der neuen kritischen Ausgabe vorgestellt wird.
Schostakowitschs Violinkonzert Nr. 1 wurde 1947 geschrieben, aber das Werk scheint etwas Persönliches zu haben, denn während seine Symphonien seine öffentlichen Äußerungen bildeten, wurde das Konzert erst 1955 (zwei Jahre nach Stalins Tod) uraufgeführt. 1967 folgte Schostakowitschs Violinkonzert Nr. 2, angeblich zum 60. Geburtstag des Geigers David Oistrakh. Aber die Arbeit ist kaum feierlich in der Stimmung. Schostakowitsch war krank, sich seiner Sterblichkeit bewusst und das Werk bezieht sich auf Werke wie die Sinfonie Nr. 4 und die Sinfonie Nr. 15. Diese Aufführung von Roth, dem London Symphony Orchestra und Sanderling bringt die dunkle Intensität des Werkes wirklich zur Geltung ist Musik mit einer Geschichte, einer dunklen Hintergrundgeschichte.
Es ist ein großes Werk mit einem fünfzehnminütigen Eröffnungssatz (ziemlich treffend ist das Tschaikowsky-Konzert in ähnlichem Maßstab gebaut).
Der erste Satz öffnet sich dunkel und droht mit Linus Roths Geige, die fast im Ton verfolgt wird. Währenddessen spielt Roth mit einem elegant lebendigen Sinn für die Linie und verleiht dem Ton eine drahtige Stärke. Es gibt Momente tanzartiger Musik, aber selbst dies ist voller Wut und es gibt viel Trostlosigkeit. Der kadenzartige Moment ist eher eine Meditation über das, was vorher gegangen ist. Aber Roth, das London Symphony Orchestra und Sanderling machen nicht den Fehler, das Werk unerbittlich zu machen, es ist voller Charakter und Vitalität, überlagert von Roths Gesangston; Diese Geige ist ein Überlebender.
Der zweite Satz von Adagio ist intensiv und melancholisch, und obwohl Roth die Sololinie zum Singen bringt, ist sein Ton auch innerlich. Es gibt bemerkenswerte Echos früherer Schostakowitsch-Werke, fast so, als würde die Solovioline über die Sterblichkeit meditieren, und selbst die jüdischen Melodien entzünden sich nicht. Dies ist keine tröstliche Arbeit, trotz des herzlichen Versprechens von Hornrufen später in der Bewegung, und Roth macht es in der Tat sehr persönlich. Der letzte Satz scheint ironisch zu lachen und es gibt eine sardonische Kante, obwohl die Geige immer wieder von selbst abwandert und nie das Gleichgewicht erreicht, wobei der letzte Tanz intensiv sardonisch ist.
Tschaikowskys Violinkonzert, das etwa 90 Jahre zuvor geschrieben wurde, ist bekannt geworden, sogar übermäßig vertraut. Und es kann auch Untertöne unterschiedlicher Art in der Arbeit geben, als Tschaikowsky das Konzert für den Geiger Iosif Kotek schrieb, der Tschaikowskys Liebhaber war (der Broschürenartikel bezeichnet Kotek eher schüchtern als Tschaikowskys sehr, sehr guten Freund). Diese Aufführung ist jedoch die erste, die eine neue kritische Ausgabe verwendet, nicht dass die Änderungen so bedeutend sind wie die jüngste Neuausgabe des von Kirill Gerstein aufgenommenen Tschaikowsky-Klavierkonzerts Nr. 1. Das Adlerohr wird kleine Veränderungen erkennen, von denen die größte zu sein scheint, dass der Geiger den gesamten zweiten Satz stumm hält. Dies schafft eine Stimmung größerer Intimität, die die gesamte Aufführung inspiriert zu haben scheint.
Zur Eröffnung des ersten Satzes scheint uns das Orchester wirklich einzuladen, und diese Eröffnung (und vieles andere im Konzert) erinnert mich immer eher an Tschaikowskys Ballette. Roth spielt mit elegantem und doch starkem Ton; Die Aufführung ist überraschend intim, aber sicherlich nicht zurückhaltend, und die große orchestrale Aussage des Hauptthemas ist in der Tat sehr, sehr großartig. Während Roths Leistung technisch sehr versiert ist, ist dies keine Leistung über Technik, die nicht auffällig ist
aber Roth benutzt seine Technik im Dienst der Musik. Die Canzonetta ist, wie zu erwarten, intim und eher vertraulich, mit einem schönen Gesangston von Roth, der mit dem Orchester echte Magie erzeugt. Das Finale, Allegro vivacissimo, ist wunderbar vital und aufregend aufregend, positiv auf die Zehen klopfend.

Shostakovich's dark second violin concerto paired with Tchaikovsky's classic in an intimate account of a new edition
Violinist Linus Roth has followed up his LP´s of concertante works by Mieczysław Weinberg with a concerto by Weinberg's friend Dmitri Shostakovich. On Challenge Records, Linus Roth, the London Symphony Orchestra and conductor Thomas Sanderling pair Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 2, Op.129 with Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto Op.35, with the Tchaikovsky being presented in the new critical edition.
Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 1 was written in 1947, but there seems to have been something personal about the work because, whilst his symphonies formed his public utterances, the concerto was not premiered until 1955 (two years after Stalin's death). Shostakovich's Violin Concerto No. 2 followed in 1967, ostensibly for violinist David Oistrakh's 60th birthday. But the work is hardly celebratory in mood. Shostakovich was ill, aware of his mortality and the work has references to such works as the Symphony No. 4 and Symphony No. 15. This performance from Roth, the London Symphony Orchestra and Sanderling really brings out the dark intensity of the work, this is music with a story, a dark back story.
It is a big work, with an opening movement lasting fifteen minutes (rather aptly the Tchaikovsky concerto is built on a similar scale).
The first movement opens dark and threatening with Linus Roth's violin almost haunted in tone. Throughout, Roth plays with an elegantly vibrant sense of the line, giving a wiry strength to the tone. There are moments of dance-like music, but even this is inlaid with anger and there is much bleakness, the cadenza-like moment is more of a meditation on what has gone before. But Roth, the London Symphony Orchestra and Sanderling do not make the mistake of making the work relentless, it is full of character and vitality, over laid by Roth's singing tone; this violin is a survivor.
The Adagio second movement is intense and melancholic, and though Roth makes the solo line sing, his tone is also inward. There are remarkable echoes of earlier Shostakovich works, almost as if the solo violin is meditating on mortality, and even the Jewish melodies fail to ignite. This is not a comforting work, despite the warm promise of horn calls later in the movement, and Roth makes it very personal indeed. The final movement seems to laugh in irony and there is a sardonic edge, though the violin keeps wandering off on its own, never reaching equilibrium, with the final dance being intensely sardonic.
Written around 90 years earlier, Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto has become familiar, even over familiar. And there may be undertones of a different variety in the work too, as Tchaikovsky wrote the concerto for the violinist Iosif Kotek, who was Tchaikovsky's lover (the booklet article, rather coyly, refers to Kotek as Tchaikovsky's very, very good friend). But this performance is the first to use a new critical edition, not that the changes are as significant as the recent new edition of the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 recorded by Kirill Gerstein . The eagle-eared will spot small changes, the biggest of which seems to be that the violinist keeps the mute on for the whole of the second movement. This creates a mood of greater intimacy, which seems to have inspired the whole performance.
For the opening of the first movement, the orchestra really does seem to be inviting us in, and this opening (and much else in the concerto) always rather reminds me of Tchaikovsky's ballets. Roth plays with elegant yet strong tone; the performance is surprisingly intimate, yet certainly not low key and the big orchestral statement of the main theme is very, very grand indeed. Whilst Roth's performance is highly technically adept, this is not a performance about technique it is not showy
but Roth uses his technique in the service of music. The Canzonetta is, as might be expected, intimate and rather confiding, with lovely singing tone from Roth, making real magic with the orchestra. The finale, Allegro vivacissimo is wonderful vital and vividly exciting, positively toe-tapping.

Die Auftritte von Rachel Podger knistern vor Vitalität und sind mit gleichbleibender Brillanz und einer Art virtuosen Lust ausgeführt, die den pompösen Charakter, die selbstbewusste Extravaganz dieser Werkreihe einfängt. Es gibt viele Bewegungsmuster hier, wo ihre schiere handwerliche Geschicklichkeit erstaunlich ist ... aber vielleicht noch mehr habe ich die exquisiten feinen Details einiger der langsamen Sätze genossen, zum Beispiel Nr. 8 in d-Moll ... eine Aufführung, die einen atemlos hinterlässt. Eine weitere Sache, in der Podger besonders gut ist, ist die Gestaltung jener zahlreichen Passagen vivaldianischer Sequenzen, die trostlos vorhersehbar sein können, aber hier nicht sind, weil sie weiß, wie man die rhythmische Spannung und den Höhepunkt und die Auflösung mit Logik und Kraft steuert. Ich würde dieses Set sicherlich als gutes Beispiel für eine moderne Sichtweise barocker Aufführungspraxis empfehlen.

Rachel Podger ist eine ausgewiesene Expertin für Barockvioline. Die britische Musikerin gründete mehrere Barockensembles, spielte Kammermusik und Konzerte mit dem Barock-Spezialisten Andrew Manze, gründete ein Barock-Festival und tourte weltweit als Solistin. Sie spielt auf einer Pesarini-Violine aus dem Jahr 1739 und seit 2009 auf der Crespi von Stradivari aus dem Jahr 1699.
Für diese Einspielung von zwölf Violinkonzerten Antonio Vivaldis wird Podger vom polnischen Ensemble Arte Dei Suonatori begleitet, einem der profiliertesten Barock-Orchester Europas. Die Aufnahme ist nicht nur technisch brilliant, sondern lebendig und teilweise erstaunlich. Entgegen aller Vorurteile gegenüber der Musik Vivaldis ist sie nicht vorhersehbar. Podger erzählt musikalisch eine Geschichte durch geschickte Tempowahl und eine bemerkenswerte Intonation. So klingt Barockmusik au seiner zeitgenössischen Perspektive.
Das DMM-Remaster für diese 180-Gramm-Doppel-LP mit 33 rpm übernahm Hans-Jörg Mauksch bei Pauler Acoustics. Die Pressung entstand bei der Pallas in Diepholz.

"The performances by Rachel Podger are crackling with vitality and executed with consistent brilliance as well as a kind of relish in virtuosity that catches the showy spirit, the self-conscious extravagance, of this particular set of works. There are plenty of movements here where her sheer digital dexterity is astonishing... but perhaps even more I enjoyed the exquisitely fine detail of some of the slow movements, for example No. 8 in D minor... that one has a performance to leave you breathless. Another thing Podger is specially good at is the shaping of those numerous passages of Vivaldian sequences, which can be drearily predictable, but aren’t so here because she knows just how to control the rhythmic tension and time the climax and resolution with logic and force. These recordings of J.S. Bach's cello suites performed by cellist Justin Pearson and 5 string cellist Pedro Silva took one year to complete, and include Schumann's piano accompaniment for the 3rd suite, performed by pianist Katherine Rockhill.

Aufnahmen in der wunderschönen Akustik der Temple Church, London, und der St Botolphs-Kirche in Chevening, Kent, UK, nur mit zwei Röhren-Mikrofonen.
Was für ein Juwel! Es fällt einem kein anderes Wort ein. Das britische Label Chasing The Dragon, das bislang in erster Linie mit Direct-to-Disc-Recordings beeindruckt hat, legt hier ein echtes Opus Magnum vor. Bachs sechs Suiten für Solo-Cello in einer hochwertigen audiophilen 5-LP-Box-Edition.
Nun werden Sie sich vielleicht fragen: Aufnahmen dieser Suiten gibt es zu hunderten - warum sollte ich denn ausgerechnet diese nun besitzen müssen? Einmal davon abgesehen, dass wirklich audiophile Aufnahmen der Suiten, die diesen Titel auch verdienen, dann doch erstaunlich wenige auf dem Markt sind? Man ist zunächst versucht zu antworten: Weil bei dieser hier einfach alles stimmt. Aber das trifft den Kern der Sache nicht, denn was diese Box so besonders macht, ist nicht primär ihre technische Perfektion, sondern die Leidenschaft und Liebe zum Detail, die in jedem Aspekt spürbar und hörbar sind.
Labelchef Mike Valentine suchte zunächst mit der Londoner Temple Church einen wundervollen Ort für die Aufnahmen aus. Dann kam Corona, und dem Aufnahme-Team wurde der Zugang zur Kirche verweigert. Glücklicherweise fand sich mit der St. Botolphs Church in Chevening ein mindestens genau so herrlich klingender Raum, der wegen der fehlenden strengen Restriktionen außerhalb Londons leichter zugänglich war. Dank der exzellenten Aufnahmequalität kann man die feinen Unterschiede in der Akustik der beiden Kirchen tatsächlich heraushören.
Aufgenommen wurde mit zwei fünfzig Jahre alten AKG Flea C 12 Mikrofonen, auf deren Positionierung mindestens genau so viel Aufwand verwendet wurde wie auf die eigentliche Aufnahme. Die Aufzeichnung lief rein analog direkt auf eine Bandmaschine, auch das Mastering geschah rein analog, von John Webber in den legendären Londoner Air Studios. Und natürlich hört man das!
Und warum braucht eine Aufnahme von Solo-Cello-Suiten nun drei Musiker? Nun, der Löwenanteil dieses Mammutprojekts ruht auf den Schultern von Justin Pearson, der nicht nur erster Cellist des National Symphony Orchestra sondern auch künstlerischer Leiter des Locrian Ensemble ist - beide sind zuletzt durch Einspielungen bei Chasing The Dragon in den Fokus der Audiophilen-Gemeinde gerückt. Pearsons herrlich warm klingendes Cello stammt aus dem Jahr 1706, ist also in etwa genau so alt wie die Suiten selbst. Doch heutige Musikwissenschaftler gehen davon aus, dass wenigstens die sechste Suite von Bach für ein damals nicht unübliches fünfsaitiges Cello geschrieben wurde. Spieler, die über solche Instrumente verfügen, gibt es nicht viele. Doch für diese Einspielung wurde extra für die sechste Suite der Cellist Pedro Silva mit seinem Fünfsaiter engagiert. Ein ungewöhnlicher Schachzug, der sich aber bezahlt macht. Nicht nur, was die Werktreue angeht, sondern auch wegen des Reizes, den es hat, diese beiden hochklassigen Interpreten zu vergleichen. Beide eint ein herrlich zupackender und leidenschaftlicher, aber auch mal verträumt tänzerischer Ton, und es ist eine der besonderen Qualitäten der Aufnahme, dass immer wieder dem emotionalen und musikalisch zwingenden Vortrag der Vorzug gegenüber trockener spieltechnischer Vollperfektion gegeben wurde.
Die Dritte im Bunde ist die Pianistin Katherine Rockhill. Nur wenige Insider wissen, dass 1986 eine verschollen geglaubte Bearbeitung der 3. Suite für Cello und Klavierbegleitung von Robert Schumann wiederentdeckt wurde. Diese Box ist aktuell die einzige Kompletteinspielung der Suiten, welche die dritte Suite nicht nur in der Originalfassung sondern zusätzlich auch in der Schumann-Bearbeitung bietet. Und das allein ist es schon wert, diese Box zu kaufen. Ein herrlicher Genuss, diesen großartigen Musikern zuzuhören, und die beiden so unterschiedlichen und je auf ihre Art so genialen Fassungen dieses Werks zu vergleichen!
Und auch abseits von musikalischer und klanglicher Qualität lässt diese Edition nichts zu wünschen übrig: Gepresst auf 5 LPs mit 180 g schwerem Vinyl, in einer schweren und stabilen Kartonbox, in eleganten roten Kartonhüllen und gefütterten Innenhüllen. Dazu gibt es ein 32-seitiges Booklet mit ausführlichen Informationen zur Aufnahme und Produktion und zahlreichen wunderschönen Bildern von den Aufnahmesessions. Und wer mehr über die Musik wissen möchte, der freut sich sicher noch ein veritables Stück Sekundärliteratur, das sich auch in der Box findet: „The Cello Suites“, ein Sachbuch, spannend wie ein Krimi, des kanadischen Musikjournalisten Eric Siblin, als Taschenbuch. Kleiner Wermutstropfen für alle weniger polyglotten Klassikfans: Booklet und Taschenbuch sind in englischer Original-Fassung beigelegt. Aber für diese Box lohnt sich auch ein Sprachkurs! Und wem das zu viel ist, der kann auch einfach Bachs herrliche Musik zu sich sprechen lassen. Facettenreich, funkelnd, wertvoll an sich, aber auch in einer gebührenden Fassung - ein echtes Juwel eben!

Recording the Bach Cello Suites: behind the scenes and a free sample download

Making high-quality audio recordings in a recording studio is one thing but making audiophile recordings at a remote venue has its own particular challenges. Neville Roberts visits London’s Temple Church to attend one such recording session featuring two of the Bach Cello Suites, performed by the renowned and award-winning cellist, Justin Pearson.
I’ve been fortunate to be able to attend a number of recording sessions in recent years. Having a technical background, I’m always keen to explore the technology used to make the recordings. The aim at each session has been to produce audiophile-quality recordings, including what many consider to be the ultimate in quality – professional master tapes.

Many of these recording sessions have been held at recording studios, where everything to do with the recording, from the acoustic environment through to the recording systems and microphones mixing, can be controlled to produce the final stereo mix. Making a recording at a remote venue is a completely different process altogether. So, when I was offered the opportunity to attend a recording session of two of the six J. S. Bach Cello Suites, organised by the audiophile record label Chasing The Dragon, I was extremely keen to attend, especially as I’m a lover of Bach’s music.
Coincidentally, it turned out that the brains behind Chasing The Dragon, Mike Valentine, and myself are both ex-BBC dating back to the seventies. Valentine was a BBC sound engineer and gained a lot of experience making recordings at outside broadcast events. All of his years’ experiences were certainly being put to good use for making this recording.
Recording the Bach Cello Suites

Bach’s first two Cello Suites had already been recorded several weeks earlier. This recording session held on 9 November 2019 aimed to record Suites 3 and 4, with Suites 5 and 6 being planned for January 2020 at the time of writing. These audiophile recordings are rather special as the analogue master tapes will be used to produce a set of limited-edition LPs that will be mastered at AIR Studios in London on their Neumann VMS 80 cutting lathe. However, one of the things that will make these LPs special is that they are to be mastered at half-speed, taking advantage of new upgrades to the VMS 80. The recordings will then be released as a limited-edition boxed set, complete with a book – ‘The Cello Suites: In Search of a Baroque Masterpiece’ by Eric Siblin – which describes in detail the Bach Cello Suites. A limited set of copy-master tapes of the entire set of Suites is also being made available.

The Bach Cello Suites on this recording are performed by one of London’s busiest and most versatile musicians, Justin Pearson. Pearson has been principal cellist, general manager and artistic director of the National Symphony Orchestra, as well as guest principal cellist of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the English Sinfonia Orchestras. For many years, he was the solo cellist in Andrew Lloyd Webber shows such as ‘Phantom of the Opera’, ‘Evita’, ‘Whistle Down the Wind’ and ‘Bombay Dreams’. Pearson is presently artistic director and manager of the Locrian Ensemble of London, and he has written award-winning scripts for plays with music that have been performed in London’s West End. Pearson has recorded for many labels, including Hyperion, Naxos, Guild, ASV, Dutton Epoch, Carlton Classics and now Chasing The Dragon. He has also produced independent programmes for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4. Pearson served as a governor for the Royal Society of Musicians (a charity that supports musicians in need) and is musical patron of Sunbeams Music Trust in Cumbria, helping children and adults with special needs through music.

The venue for the recordings was the beautiful Temple Church in London, which has eight hundred years of history, dating from the Crusaders in the 12th century. The Church was built by the Knights Templar, the order of crusading monks founded to protect pilgrims on their way to and from Jerusalem in the 12th century. The Church comprises two parts – the Round and the Chancel. The Round Church was consecrated in 1185 by the patriarch of Jerusalem. It was designed to recall the holiest place in the Crusaders’ world: the circular Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Due to its fabulous acoustics, it’s home to some of the most famous church music in London.
The recording equipment
As audio (and professional tape) enthusiasts, we don’t need any convincing about the importance of using quality equipment and cabling in our hi-fi systems. However, this is often overlooked by commercial recording studios (even those that offer audiophile-quality recordings), which focus instead on the practicalities of equipping a recording studio with equipment, especially cables, that can withstand the rigours of regular use. Similarly, equipment and cables used for recordings out in the field are often chosen for their ability to withstand rough handling. Fortunately, the importance of using audiophile equipment and cabling is recognised by Chasing The Dragon and no expense has been spared when recording the Bach Cello Suites. The cables alone cost tens of thousands of pounds per run!

The recording was made using a pair of Flea/AKG C12 microphones, separated by a Jecklin Disk, for the stereo feed, and a Neumann KU-100 dummy head for the binaural feed. For the analogue recording, the stereo output from the Focusrite microphone preamps was fed to a Sony APR 5003 master tape recorder running at 15ips and recording onto ¼ inch ATR master tapes. The Sony recorder has been renovated and calibrated by one of the best in the business – Petronel Butuc of The Audiophiles Clinic. Butuc has gained an enviable international reputation and his services are very much in demand, so it was especially fortunate that Chasing The Dragon’was able to secure his services for making these analogue recordings. Incidentally, a Nagra VI 6-channel recorder was used for the 24-bit, 192kHz PCM digital recording of the stereo feed from the C12s and the KU-100 dummy head for the binaural recording. For DSD recordings, two Tascam DA3000 DSD two-channel recorders were used – one for the stereo feed from the C12s and one for the binaural feed from the KU-100 dummy head. High quality Vovox and Nordost cables were used throughout the recording chain.

Between the recordings, I spoke with Justin Pearson about the challenges he faced with these performances, and in particular, about his cello and bow. The cello was crafted by Francesco Ruggeri in 1706. Ruggeri, who studied in Cremona with Amarti and was in the same group of apprentices as Stradivarius, re-designed the shape of the instrument. Stradivarius, however, continued to make the more old-fashioned, traditional ‘Amarti-style’ designs. The reason for the re-design was that musicians required cellos for solo playing that would project more sound and be physically smaller to allow players to reach higher up the instrument while playing. Stradivarius probably made only about 60 cellos, while Ruggeri made considerably more.

The back of Pearson’s cello is made from a single piece of wood and the front is made from two pieces of maple wood, with beautifully-cut F-holes. When Pearson purchased the instrument, the scroll had disappeared, but it has now been replaced with one made by Guadagnini in Turin. Pearson had the cello restored in New York at a cost of £18,000 for the restoration alone! The bow is a Lamy Père, mounted in gold, and was made for an exhibition in Paris in around 1900. The weight and shape of the bow is balanced for solo playing, and Pearson bought it especially for this recording.

The recordings from the master tape are truly spectacular. The performance is one of the best renditions of the Bach Cello Suites I’ve ever heard, and the recording quality is amazing. All the atmosphere and space of the wonderful venue together with the detail of the instrument has been captured beautifully, thanks to the skill of the recording engineer and the quality of the audio equipment used throughout the recording chain. Conclusions
For me, apart from engaging fantastic performers, the main challenge when making live recordings is how to capture and reproduce all the ambience of the environment without allowing it to detract from the performance. To overlook this would result in a recording that might as well have been made in a recording studio.
The goal of the recording engineer is to add an extra dimension of reality by capturing the magic of the recording venue. This requires not only considerable skill (a skill that is exemplified by these Chasing The Dragon recordings, which somehow manage to capture the essence of reality and transport the listener to the recording venue) but, also, the best in audiophile equipment for the recording chain, including the choice of microphones, cables, amplifiers, power supplies, and the recorder itself. The result is a listening experience that is much closer to a live performance and can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. Certainly, after the final recording session has taken place in January 2020, I’ll be one of the first in line to purchase what I believe will be an outstanding recording of a spectacular performance of these Bach masterpieces.

"The orchestra rehearses downstairs while upstairs the mastering room engineers record and play back a test lacquer. Finally, it's time for a recorded take of the "Carmen" excerpts with Mezzo-Soprano Rosie Middleton. The tension is palpable in both the control room and upstairs. It's quickly clear that the free-spirited rehearsal has given way to a darker, more constrained performance that satisfies no one, especially Ms. Middleton. The second take is better but is still missing the required "magic". Take three is "the one". Everyone is relieved and it's technically perfect."
"Then, after a lunch break, it's on to the Chabrier "España". After a recorded rehearsal playback, it's time for a take. The first performance is spirited but an orchestral crescendo causes the cutting stylus to crash through the groove wall into an adjacent groove, requiring a second take. Das Zuhause des britischen Labels Chasing The Dragon sind eigentlich die renommierten von Beatles-Produzent George Martin gegründeten Air Studios in London, doch für die wundervolle Reihe von Live-Aufnahmen klassischer Musik, die das noch junge Label seit kurzem betreibt, verlassen Produzent Mike Valentine und sein Aufnahme-Team gerne die heimischen Gefilde, um die Musik wenn man so will in ihrer natürlichen Umgebung einzufangen.
Und für die Musik auf der nun erschienenen neuesten Veröffentlichung dieser Reihe kann es wirklich kaum eine geeignetere Umgebung geben: „Vivaldi In Venice“ heißt das rundum gelungene Doppel-Album, und aufgenommen wurde es live im Konzert (genauer: über fünf verschiedene Konzerte hinweg) in der ehemaligen Kirche San Vidal in Venedig. Der barocke Bau mit seiner geräumigen und doch intimen Akustik stand schon in Venedig, als Antonio Vivaldi nur wenige Häuser weiter am Ospedale delle Pieta als Geigenlehrer und Komponist wirkte, und schließlich zu einem der größten „Touristenmagneten“ der Stadt schon zu Lebzeiten wurde.
Die Interpreti Veneziani, das Kammerorchester dieser Aufnahme, sind der Stadt mindestens genau so eng verbunden wie damals Vivaldi; schon seit 1987 geben sie ihre Konzerte in San Vidal. Für Chasing The Dragon nahm das Orchester schon Vivaldis „Vier Jahreszeiten“ in London als Direktschnitt auf; für die Live-Aufnahme wählten die Interpreti nun ein Programm aus, das eindrucksvoll zeigt, dass Vivaldis umfangreiches Werk wesentlich mehr zu bieten hat als „nur“ den großen Klassiker der „Vier Jahreszeiten“. Auf zwei LPs gibt es hier zu hören: Zwei Cello-Konzerte, ein Fagott-Konzert, eine Trio-Sonate und ein Violin-Konzert, und dazu noch zwei Violinkonzerte bzw. ein Concerto Grosso von Vivaldis Zeitgenossen, Landsmännern und Violinisten-Kollegen Corelli und Tartini.
Gemeinsam mit den großartigen Solisten (Giovanni Agazzi, Federico Braga, Nicola Granillo, Giacobbe Stevanato, Andrea Bressan und Davide Amadio) wirft sich das achtköpfige Ensemble mit italienischer Verve, zupackender Frische, aber auch verblüffender Präzision in die Interpretation dieser Musik, die in ihren kundigen Händen kein bisschen angestaubt wirkt, sondern eine solche Klangpracht und Virtuosität verströmt, dass man sofort verstehen kann, was schon vor Jahrhunderten die Zuhörer scharenweise in Vivaldis Konzerte lockte.
Die mit wenigen, aber hochwertigen und vor allem perfekt ausgerichteten Mikrofonen gemachte Aufnahme überzeugt in allen Details: Der Klang räumlich, präzise, warm und so natürlich, dass man wirklich meint, Musiker und Publikum säßen bei einem selbst zuhause im Wohnzimmer - oder vielmehr, man selbst säße mittendrin in San Vidal. Herrlich warm sind die Tiefen der Generalbass-Instrumente, perfekt ausdifferenziert und rund die hohen Streicher, glasklar das Cembalo, und trotz des durchaus sakralen Nachhalls bleibt auch in den schnellen Sätzen kein einziger rascher Tonwechsel auf der Strecke. Kurz: Chasing The Dragon jagt nicht nur den Drachen, sondern hat hier eindeutig einen gefangen, und zwar ein echtes Prachtexemplar. Der pure Genuss!

Für dieses Album nahm Mike Valentine sein Equipment mit in die Heimatstadt des Kammerorchesters – an den Ort, der letztlich für die Gründung seines Labels mitverantwortlich war, denn die Performance der Interpreti Veneziani in Verbindung mit der einmaligen Akustik der heute als Konzertsaal genutzten ehemaligen Kirche San Vidal in San Marco hatte ja sechs Jahre zuvor den Wunsch in dem Sound-Enthusiasten entfacht, ebendieses Erlebnis auf Band festzuhalten. Fünf Konzerte des dort regelmäßig auftretenden Ensembles schnitt er während seines Aufenthalts mit, aus denen er für dieses Album ein "Ideal-Konzert" schnitt (wobei es garantiert keine Schnitte innerhalb eines Werkes gibt: Die Musik erklingt exakt so, wie sie gespielt wurde!). Das Programm besteht übrigens nicht nur aus Werken des "roten Priesters", sondern auch aus zwei Violinkonzerten von Giuseppe Tartini und einem Concerto Grosso von Arcangelo Corelli. Die Abbildung nicht nur der Musik selbst (beeindruckend genug!), sondern vor allem auch der Raum-Atmosphäre darf schon als spektakulär bezeichnet werden: Es ist in der Tat nicht schwer, sich vorzustellen, selbst vor Ort zu sein… (2018)

Chasing The Dragon's first "Direct Cut" album was of the Interpreti Veneziani performing a wonderful version of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. When chatting with Paolo, the orchestra's organizer, CTD discovered the group had never taken part in a 'live' recording. They have always performed in the San Vidal Church which is in the Accademia area of Venice. The acoustics in the church are outstanding. So after some discussion with the orchestra, they were convinced to record a live double album there. This would mean that a small crew would have to go to Venice and record 5 live concerts. It's a dirty job, but somebody had to do it! The jump factor of this album really has to be heard!
For many years Francoise and I at Chasing the Dragon have had the pleasure of visiting Venice, where we would attend concerts given by the leading chamber orchestra; Interpreti Veneziani.
