STRAIGHT UP is Badfinger's best-known album and perhaps the definitive example of their sparkling brand of Beatles-influenced pop. Expertly produced by George Harrison and Todd Rundgren, this 1972 album spawned two hit singles (both written by group leader Pete Ham): the romantic ballad "Day After Day" (Badfinger's only gold record) and "Baby Blue," a soaring power pop classic that is still regularly played on rock radio. What's better than a Bill Evans Trio album? How about a Bill Evans trio album on which the bassist is Percy Heath, the drummer is Connie Kay, and the leader is not Evans but alto sax god Cannonball Adderley, making the group actually a quartet? It's a different sort of ensemble, to be sure, and the musical results are marvelous. Adderley's playing on "Waltz for Debby" is both muscular and sensitive, as it is on the other Evans composition here, a modal ballad called "Know What I Mean?" Other treats include the sprightly "Toy" and two takes of the Gershwin classic "Who Cares?" The focus here is, of course, on Adderley's excellent post-bop stylings, but it's also interesting to hear Evans playing with a rhythm section as staid and conservative as Kay and Heath (both charter members of the Modern Jazz Quartet). It's hard to imagine any fan of mainstream jazz not finding much to love on this very fine recording. Paul McCartney's second album with his new band Wings (consisting of himself, his wife Linda, ex-Moody Blues guitarist Denny Laine, and drummer Denny Seiwell) was a far more polished recording than Wings' low-key 1971 debut, WILDLIFE. Recorded at several sessions between 1971 and 1973, RED ROSE SPEEDWAY found McCartney rebuilding his reputation as a major rock artist. The album featured his biggest solo hit to date, "My Love" (a romantic rock ballad that rocketed him back to the top of the charts), as well as forceful rockers like the opening track, "Big Barn Bed," and plenty of winsome, McCartneyesque pop confections like "One Last Kiss." Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine All right, he's made a record with his wife and a record with his pickup band where democracy is allegedly the conceit even if it never sounds that way, so he returns to a solo effort, making the most disjointed album he ever cut. There's a certain fascination to its fragmented nature, not just because it's decidedly on the softer side of things, but because his desire for homegrown eccentricity has been fused with his inclination for bombastic art rock à la Abbey Road. Consequently, Red Rose Speedway winds up being a really strange record, one that veers toward the schmaltzy AOR MOR (especially on the hit single "My Love"), yet is thoroughly twisted in its own desire toward domestic art. As a result, this is every bit as insular as the lo-fi records of the early '90s, but considerably more artful, since it was, after all, designed by one of the great pop composers of the century. Yes, the greatest songs here are slight — "Big Barn Bed," "One More Kiss," and "When the Night" — but this is a deliberately slight record (slight in the way a snapshot album is important to a family yet glazes the eyes of any outside observer). Work your way into the inner circle, and McCartney's little flourishes are intoxicating — not just the melodies, but the facile production and offhand invention. If these are miniscule steps forward, consider this: if Brian Wilson can be praised for his half-assed ideas and execution, then why not McCartney, who has more character here than the Beach Boys did on their Brother records? Review by Alex Henderson ............................. Milt Jackson was 38 when, in December 1961, he co-led this superb hard-bop date with the distinctive guitarist Wes Montgomery. A jazzman who was as opinionated as he was gifted, Jackson wouldn't hesitate to tell you exactly what he thought of a musician — so when he praised Montgomery, you knew his praise was genuine. Not surprisingly, the boppers prove to be quite compatible on Bags Meets Wes, which finds them co-leading an all star-quintet that also includes pianist Wynton Kelly, bassist Sam Jones, and drummer Philly Joe Jones (who shouldn't be confused with swing drummer Jo Jones). Although Jackson and Montgomery prove what lyrical ballad players they could be on the standard "Stairway to the Stars," ballads aren't a high priority on this album. Instead, the improvisers put more of their energy into the blues — and the 12-bar format serves them well on "Sam Sack," "Blue Roz," and "S.K.J." Equally strong are hard-swinging versions of Montgomery's "Jingles" and Benny Golson's "Stablemates." ...................... Originally released on LP by Riverside in the early 1960s, Bags Meets Wes has been reissued several times over the years. But even if the band did start as a Beatles wannabe, it eventually forged a successful power-pop style of its own. NO DICE, Badfinger's second album, exhibits a confident band with strong, melodic pop songs and a diminishing Beatles influence. Bandleader Pete Ham, with his distinctively tense vocals and guitar lines, carries the band through well-constructed melodies, well-conceived harmonies, and edgy instrumentals. The track list includes a few genuine killers. "No Matter What," a compact gem that recalls the melodic innocence of the early Beatles, may be the band's apex. "Without You" is the band's original version of a quirky power ballad that Harry Nilsson would soon turn into a pop smash. The five extra tracks included with this reissue offer a variety of treats. The fiery "Get Down" displays a hard, bluesy edge and searing lead guitar, while "Friends Are Hard to Find" is all tight, gentle harmonies. Von den Originalbändern wurde vom berühmten Steve Hoffmann ein phantastischer Remaster angelegt, der hier in perfekter Soundqualität auf Gold CD von DCC Classics (1996) gebannt wurde. Die Nummer ist GZS-1096. Schon das Eingangslied "Let Em In" beginnt mit phänomenalem Vibraphon -Intro, das man SO klanglich noch nicht so schön gehört hat. Natürlich fällt das auf einer Highend-Anlage nochmehr auf, aber die klangliche Dynamik, Detailtreue und Wärme (besonders im gesang) kommt auch bei durchschnittlichen Anlagen durch, verglichen zu einer Standard-CD-Ausgabe. das kommt auch bei dem schönen Track "Must Do Something About It": so frisch und natürlich! Die CD enthält übrigens auch noch drei Bonustracks: "Walking in the Park with Eloise" "Bridge on the River Suite" "Sally G" ........................ *************************************************************************************************** .......................Rezension 'Roll On!' Wenn mensch von Darkness redet, dann ist damit immer auch "RAM Records" gemeint. Bereits seit 1991 sind die Macher Andy C und Ant Miles mit ihrem Label im Namen der Bockshörner aktiv. Sie haben eigentlich zusammen mit Labels wie "Reinforced" oder "Hardcore Phonographic" in mühsamer Kleinarbeit die Grundlagen geschaffen, auf der heute "No-U-Turn" oder "Source Direct" ihre Breakbeatburgen bauen. Daß das kein schnöder, bröckeliger Sand, sondern äußerst stabile Wertarbeit ist, wußten viele schon längst. Aber eine mehr oder weniger umfangreiche Zusammenstellung der wichtigsten Tracks der letzten Jahre, und darum handelt es sich bei 'The Speed Of Sound', läßt selbst eingefleischte Phreaks noch mal mit den Ohren schlackern. If Venus and Mars had the façade of being an album by a band, At the Speed of Sound really is a full-band effort, where everybody gets a chance to sing, even contribute a song. This, ironically, winds up as considerably less cohesive than its predecessor despite these efforts for community, not because Wings was not a band in the proper sense, but because nobody else in the band pulsed as much weight as McCartney, who was resting on his laurels here. Consider this: The two hits "Let 'Em In" and "Silly Love Songs" are so lightweight that their lack of substance seems nearly defiant. They have sweet, nice melodies and are well crafted, but as songs they're nonexistent, working primarily as effervescent popcraft of their time. And that's the case for most of At the Speed of Sound, as tracks like "She's My Baby" play like the hits, only without memorable hooks. There is a bit of charm to the record, arriving in Linda's awkwardly sung "Cook of the House," the mellow "Must Do Something About It," and especially "Beware My Love," the best-written song here that effortlessly moves from sun-drenched harmonies to hard rock. Apart from the latter, these are modest pleasures buried on an album that may have been a chart-topping blockbuster, but now seems like one of McCartney's most transient works. Although not as flawless as 1969's WILLY & THE POOR BOYS or 1970's COSMO'S FACTORY, PENDULUM (also released in '70) certainly has its moments. It may only contain one certified hit single (the chugging, melancholic "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?," one of singer/songwriter John Fogerty's best), but both "(Wish I Could) Hideaway" and "Hey Tonight" have become staples on FM classic rock radio over the years, thanks to Fogerty's memorable melodies and inimitably gritty singing style. Interestingly, PENDULUM is CCR's most ambitious album, with progressive arrangements, instrumentation (including brass and a vocal choir), and a higher gloss to the production. But Fogerty's songwriting is as solid as ever. The album's bluesy opener, "Pagan Baby," with its great guitar riff and tight ensemble playing, remains one of the band's most underrated songs. The style is mixed--from the poppy singalong "Molina" to the ballad "It's Just A Thought" (which contains some fine swirling organ work) to the adventurous album-closer "Rude Awakening #2" (one of the band's few instrumentals)--but PENDULUM proves that even when the band branched out, they could still deliver the goods............... *********************************************************************************************** ................... During 1969 and 1970, CCR was dismissed by hipsters as a bubblegum pop band and the sniping had grown intolerable, at least to John Fogerty, who designed Pendulum as a rebuke to critics. He spent time polishing the production, bringing in keyboards, horns, even a vocal choir. His songs became self-consciously serious and tighter, working with the aesthetic of the rock underground — Pendulum was constructed as a proper album, contrasting dramatically with CCR's previous records, all throwbacks to joyous early rock records where covers sat nicely next to hits and overlooked gems tucked away at the end of the second side. To some fans of classic CCR, this approach may feel a little odd since only "Have You Ever Seen the Rain" and maybe its B-side "Hey Tonight" sound undeniably like prime Creedence. But, given time, the album is a real grower, revealing many overlooked Fogerty gems. Yes, it isn't transcendent like the albums they made from Bayou Country through Cosmo's Factory, but most bands never even come close to that kind of hot streak. Instead, Pendulum finds a first-class songwriter and craftsman pushing himself and his band to try new sounds, styles, and textures. His ambition results in a stumble — "Rude Awakening 2" portentously teeters on the verge of prog-rock, something CCR just can't pull off — but the rest of the record is excellent, with such great numbers as the bluesy groove "Pagan Baby," the soulful vamp "Chameleon," the moody "It's Just a Thought," and the raver "Molina." Most bands would kill for this to be their best stuff, and the fact that it's tucked away on an album that even some fans forget illustrates what a tremendous band Creedence Clearwater Revival was. ................... **********************************************************************************************
