Her 1979 debut includes several tracks that automatically caught the ear of rock radio, and perfectly set up a recording career that by the mid-'80s would make her one of the top female rockers in the U.S. While other female-fronted rocker outfits such as Heart incorporated elements of Led Zeppelin into their sound, Benatar and her band went the opposite route and incorporated melodic pop into their hard rock. This wonderful 1958 session features the tenor sax legend leading pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Arthur Taylor on a well-chosen five-song set of jazz and pop standards. The album opens with a lively version of Count Basie's "Good Bait" that allows Coltrane, Chambers and Garland to indulge in some exquisite, highly inventive solos. While Coltrane's versions of Billy Eckstine's "I Want To Talk About You" and Fred Lacey's "Theme For Ernie" are pretty much straight ballad performances, his bold, powerful style brings out the soulful feel of these two beautiful, reflective melodies. The closing track--a wild rendition of Irving Berlin's "Russian Lullaby," ends the album on a high note, with Coltrane and Garland racing through this complicated tune with remarkable precision and focus. Superbly recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, SOULTRANE is a true jazz classic and quite simply one of Coltrane's finest albums. ....................... ********************************************************************************************** ...................... Rollins creates explorative and often witty improvisations on such songs as "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby with a Dixie Melody," "You," "In the Chapel in the Moonlight," and roaring versions of "I've Found a New Baby" and "The Song Is You." Bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian weren't Bill Evans' first trio partners (they replaced non-brothers Sam and Philly Joe Jones), nor were they his longest-lasting (the lineup lasted barely 18 months). Nevertheless, the Evans-LaFaro-Motian partnership became the yardstick by which all future jazz piano trios were to be measured. Their astonishing collective improvisation, best heard on two takes each of the standard "Autumn Leaves" and the Evans-Miles Davis collaboration "Blue In Green" (first heard on Davis' epochal KIND OF BLUE), demonstrates the remarkable intuition of this trio. Here Evans, LaFaro and Motian play as with a single guiding consciousness, which makes these moody, low-key renditions of popular favorites ("Witchcraft," "When I Fall In Love," "Someday My Prince Will Come") sound as fresh as the pair of Evans originals. He took more chances, and pulled off more daring polyrhythmic designs than any drummer of his generation save for Max Roach and Art Blakey. Nowhere is this better illustrated than on an abstract romp through Gillespie's "Salt Peanuts." Jones sets a fierce boppish pace with fragmented shards of Afro-Cuban accents, Vaudevillian rim shots and elegant counterpoint. RINGO, the Fab Four skin-pounder's third solo album, is widely regarded as his finest, due to the happy synchronicity of good songs, good production, and a first-class batch of musicians all coming together in a thoughtful but organic manner.
