Steve Miller has been known to take several years between albums to record follow-ups, but one of the few exceptions to this rule was his 1977 release BOOK OF DREAMS. With his previous album from a year earlier, FLY LIKE AN EAGLE, still hovering around the charts, Miller released another set of songs recorded during the same sessions that produced EAGLE. It proved to be the right move, as BOOK OF DREAMS was a Top Five smash, spawning such hit singles as the melodic "Jet Airliner," the jovial "Jungle Love," as well as "Swingtown." While THE INCREDIBLE JAZZ GUITAR OF is perhaps the all-time classic Wes-with-piano-trio recording, SO MUCH GUITAR still has much to offer, including moments of almost vengefully straight-ahead bebop. The standout track is "Something Like Bags," a cooking, mid-tempo minor blues written in tribute to Milt Jackson. After an impeccable Hank Jones solo, Wes stretches out for five choruses, making his trademark build from bluesy bop lines to effortless octaves. Montgomery and Jones get into some hip trading on Neil Hefti's "Repetition;" for sheer virtuosity of blowing, see "Cotton Tail" and Montgomery's one original of this set, "Twisted Blues." "While We're Young" is the obligatory (and gorgeous) unaccompanied guitar solo, "One For My Baby" the blues ballad and "I Wish I Knew" the album's ballad proper. Ron Carter on bass and Lex Humphries on drums round out the rhythm section in classic early '60s style, joined for five tracks by conga player Ray Barretto. ................ *********************************************************************************************

Ella Fitzgerald had the ability to personalize some of the most recognizable material from the foremost songwriters in American popular music history. In this instance, the combination of Cole Porter's words and Fitzgerald's interpretation of them created one of the most sought after sessions embraced by jazz and pop fans alike, transcending boundaries often associated with those genres. Originally released in 1956 on the Verve label, such standards as "Night and Day," "I Love Paris," "What Is This Thing Called Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," "You're the Top," and "Love for Sale" secured one of Ella Fitzgerald's crowning moments. The success of these early Porter (and previous Gershwin) sessions brought about numerous interpretations of other songbooks throughout the next several years including those of Rodgers and Hart, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, and Irving Berlin. ~ Al Campbell Though better known for her remarkable scat-singing abilities, Ella Fitzgerald was a genius at interpreting songwriters. It's as if she felt she had to understand and express every nuance of a lyric before she was comfortable enough with it to let fly from her vocal chords. As a result, whenever Fitzgerald was matched with a particularly outstanding set of lyrics, fireworks could be assumed to follow. Cole Porter may be the finest lyricist in pop music history, which obviously makes Fitzgerald's COLE PORTER SONGBOOK VOLUME ONE one of her finest-ever releases. The coupling of lyricist and singer is so perfect that the listing of highlights becomes superfluous. Buddy Bregman's arrangements are slick but never intrusive, catching every bit of musical humor in a saucy tune like "Too Darn Hot" and investing ballads like "Begin the Beguine" with just enough elegance and emotion. This album is simply perfect. One of Ella Fitzgerald's great vocal assets was that throughout her long career, her voice retained an essentially innocent quality. Lightnin' Hopkins is the star of this live recording, made at an August 1961 concert at the Ash Grove in Hollywood featuring Hopkins, Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee (with Big Joe Williams sitting in on three numbers). It isn't remotely unique, joining a long list of club recordings by all three, although the original LP (on the Davon and Horizon labels) was obscure enough that collectors may welcome this CD. The sound is excellent, and the original master tape has yielded one extra Terry/McGhee track ("Po' Boy") and one extra Hopkins/Terry/McGhee song ("Early Morning Blues") from the same show—the producers have also added on two more songs ("I'm A Stranger Here," "Trouble In Mind") from an L.A. Troubador show by Terry and McGhee, bringing the running time up to 60 minutes. The sound is excellent, the performances are spirited enough, and the addition of the ominous "Early Morning Blues" shifts the record more toward blues than the folk/hootenanny orientation of the released Hopkins/Terry/McGhee tracks. "Blues For the Lowlands" is the best of the Terry/McGhee tracks, beautifully showcasing their harmonica/guitar interplay. Those of you who still cling to the illusion that all gold CDs are created equal should find playing this title instructive. Due to a licensing foulup with Polygram, DCC was never able to release their version of The Original Soundtrack, although Steve Hoffman had already mastered it from the original master tapes and it had been given a catalog number, GZS-1083. Mobile Fidelity rushed out their gold CD version while Polygram stalled, and then it was too late. The project was reluctantly shelved. Knowing that I'm a big fan, Steve kindly gave me a promo gold disc in a generic jewel case. DCC had never even gotten as far as producing the booklet or the back. They would typically run off a couple dozen promos of a title like that, and I counted myself one of the lucky few to get one. Playing it against my best British original LP, I knew that Steve had worked his magic once again -- the sound was gorgeous. I'm an LP guy, so I still liked my vinyl version better, but it was hard to fault the sound of the gold disc. It's an amazing recording, one I've demonstrated my stereo with for 20 years. The ambience, sound effects, and especially the dynamic multi-tracked voices on One Night in Paris at the climax of the song are nothing short of stunning. This is the kind of recording that makes one sit up and take notice. It's classic 10cc everything-but-the-kitchen-sink "Wall of Sound" sound (minus the Phil Spector distortion), the kind I live for. Supertramp, Jellyfish, Ambrosia, Yes -- to this day I'm a sucker for that Cinerama size soundstage they like to play on. It's one of the reasons I have the Legacy Whisper speaker system, with its eight fifteen inch woofers. You need that kind of driver power to produce The Big Sound. And the louder the better. Back to my story. So one day I happened to get hold of the MOFI Original Soundtrack. I practically could not believe my ears. They had ruined it. Completely. It sounded nothing like my good LP or the DCC CD. It was thin, harsh, flat, grainy. Man, it was really a piece of crap. It may be self serving to say so, but I invite everyone to do the shootout for themselves. I suppose those people who hold MOFI in high esteem can say everyone has a bad day now and then. But that label had a lot of bad days if you ask me. If you want to hear this music right on CD, I'm afraid it's this or nothing. This is not a CDR. John Coltrane's earliest recordings for Prestige found him in the role of host to some excellent improvising saxophonists, modernists and classicists alike. At the same time as he engaged in these conservative blowing sessions, Trane was taking stock of himself as a composer and improviser. Trane felt the influence of Miles and Monk very keenly in 1957, and thenceforth there'd be a keen edge of discovery to his music. Still, his blowing in more or less traditional contexts such as CATTIN' WITH COLTRANE AND QUINICHETTE embraces classic values, even as he strains to break free of the form. Coltrane is a gracious host, and often defers to Quinichette, letting the old master take the lead. But Trane gets his licks in. Listen to his subtle intervals behind Quinichette on the head to "Anatomy" (our old friend "All The Things You Are"), before launching into a rhythmically complex solo; then check out Quinichette's dulcet, witty response. Pianist Mal Waldron's solo is heroically laid back, building subtle melodic sandcastles without upsetting the groove. The closing exchanges are particularly sweet, as Trane pares down his phrasing to concentrate on the sweetest notes, and play to Quinichette's strengths. The coy easygoing blues of "Cattin'" is driven along by Waldron's thoughtful orchestrations, a new suit of chords for each stylist--a Monkish comp behind Coltrane, languid nibbles and pecks for the elegant Quinichette. Drummer Ed Thigpen's buoyant intro launches the Basie-ish groove of "Sunday," a classic tenor battle. Quinichette floats through the theme on a turquoise cloud. Although John Coltrane gets top billing, this CD reissue from DCC Jazz is really an excellent set by tenor Paul Quinichette who was always most notable for the similarity of his sound and style to Lester Young in the 1950s. There are the five selections from the original album which, in addition to Quinichette (who has "Exactly like You" as his feature) and Coltrane, includes pianist Mal Waldron, bassist Julian Euell and drummer Ed Thigpen, plus an unreleased version of "Tea for Two" without Coltrane and three previously unknown numbers from a 1952 Quinichette session with a four-piece rhythm section. The sound quality on this CD is superb and the swing/bop music has plenty of strong moments. Includes liner notes by Here, Rollins and special guest John Coltrane get right down to it on the classic riff "Tenor Madness." Coltrane is still zeroing in on his sound, while Sonny has found his (for now). Coltrane chases the blue trains, the snakes and the wind on a fulminating solo, ending with a hint of "Stranger In Paradise." Rollins replies coyly--his sense of space and phrasing more akin to Miles--painting with clouds, patiently elongating his line out of dozens of little melodic motifs, teasing Philly Joe until he busts, finishing with a counterpunching flurry of his own. As Coltrane and Rollins trade riffs and choruses, you can hear them commenting favorably on each others' inventions until they're practically one voice. For the remainder of TENOR MADNESS, Rollins contents himself to nurse the most possible melody and swing out of a few smokey orbs of sound, in the manner of mid '50s Lester Young. With "When Your Lover Has Gone" Sonny sets a relaxed groove atop Garland's magic chordal carpet, letting the action come to him, before giving way to a brilliant Chambers aria and a masterful Philly Joe solo. "Paul's Pal" and "My Reverie" are also given slow soulful treatments, while "The Most Beautiful Girl" concludes things at a brighter tempo, as Rollins toys with his beat like a cat with a mouse, before pouncing on it with Parker-ish rhythmic drive. .................. *********************************************************************************************** "Tenor Madness" was the recording that, once and for all, established Rollins as one of the premier tenor saxophonists, an accolade that in retrospect, has continued through six full decades and gives an indication why as a young player, Rollins was so well liked, as his fluency, whimsical nature, and solid construct of melodies and solos gave him the title of the next Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young of mainstream jazz. "Tenor Madness", using Miles Davis’ group – pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, is the only recording of Rollins with John Coltrane, who was also in Davis’ group. Rollins and John Coltrane met in 1956 and went on to largely define the state of jazz tenor saxophone in the mid-Fifties. Their playing set a standard that has been a benchmark of excellence for saxophonists—and others—ever since. By the time this LP was released, Rollins already had such albums to his name as "Worktime" and "Sonny Rollins Plus 4" in addition to his sideman exploits with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet. At a time when he was a member of the legendary Clifford Brown/Max Roach sextet, Sonny Rollins was still the apple fallen not too far from the tree of Miles Davis. Tenor Madness was the recording that, once and for all, established Newk as one of the premier tenor saxophonists, an accolade that in retrospect, has continued through six full decades and gives an indication why a young Rollins was so well liked, as his fluency, whimsical nature, and solid construct of melodies and solos gave him the title of the next Coleman Hawkins or Lester Young of mainstream jazz. With the team of pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones, staples of that era's Miles Davis combos, Rollins has all the rhythmic ammunition to cut loose, be free, and extrapolate on themes as only he could, and still can. This is most evident on his version of "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World," started in its normal choppy waltz time, followed by a sax/drums prelude, a drum solo from Jones, and steamed from there on in, a hot 4/4 romp. Garland is particularly outstanding for keeping up the pace, depth and placement on this one. A bluesy version of "When Your Lover Has Gone," again enlivened by Jones, and the legendary title track with Rollins and John Coltrane trading long solos, and fours with Jones, are tunes that in the mid-'50s defined the parlance "blowing session." "Paul's Pal," in tribute to Chambers, has become a standard in its own right with a bright, memorable melody showing the good humor of Rollins, especially on the second time through, while the saxophonist's ability to sing vocal like tones through his horn is no better evinced as during the light ballad "My Reverie." A recording that should stand proudly alongside Saxophone Colossus as some of the best work of Sonny Rollins in his early years, it's also a testament to the validity, vibrancy, and depth of modern jazz in the post-World War era.
