One of a series of recordings culled from a 1965 engagement at a now-defunct Chicago nightclub, COOKIN' AT THE PLUGGED NICKEL features the classic mid-'60s Davis band--Wayne Shorter (sax), Tony Williams (drums), Ron Carter (bass) and Herbie Hancock (piano). The playing throughout is ferocious and loose, Williams in particular burning the house down with his lush, driving cymbal work. Blowing with wild abandon, Miles is here just beginning to explore the looser structures that would eventually dominate his music beginning with IN A SILENT WAY and BITCHES BREW. Generally, the band spends very little time worrying about following the melody, or even the chord changes, of a tune, instead diving headfirst into full-tilt improvisation. Although there are a few tender moments, notably the very beautiful opening measures of "Stella by Starlight," the playing here is not what one could call subtle. Exciting, unhindered music, LIVE AT THE PLUGGED NICKEL is a good example of straight hard bop at it's most raucous. COOKIN' WITH THE MILES DAVIS QUINTET documents the last half of the band's final marathon sessions for Prestige, presenting a dynamic portrait of Miles' evolving art. He emerges from the opening tumult of Sonny Rollins' "Airegin," taunting The Rhythm Section (as they were already known) by slowly crafting phrases and marking off wide expanses of space, only to leap back into the maelstrom with long, expressive lines and throttled cries before John Coltrane comes tearing through. Cookin' is the first of four albums derived from the Miles Davis quintet's fabled extended recording session on October 26, 1956; the concept being that the band would document their vast, live-performance catalog in a studio environment, rather than preparing all new tracks for their upcoming long-player. The bounty of material in the band's live sets -- as well as the overwhelming conviction in the quintet's studio sides -- would produce the lion's share of the Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' albums. As these recordings demonstrate, there is an undeniable telepathic cohesion that allows this band -- consisting of Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) -- to work so efficiently both on the stage as well as in the studio. This same unifying force is also undoubtedly responsible for the extrasensory dimensions scattered throughout these recordings. The immediate yet somewhat understated ability of each musician to react with the ingenuity and precision is expressed in the consistency and singularity of each solo as it is maintained from one musician to the next without the slightest deviation. "Blues by Five" reveals the exceptional symmetry between Davis and Coltrane that allows them to complete each other's thoughts musically. Cookin' features the pairing of "Tune Up/When Lights Are Low" which is, without a doubt, a highlight not only of this mammoth session, but also the entire tenure of Miles Davis mid-'50s quintet. All the elements converge upon this fundamentally swinging medley. Davis' pure-toned solos, and the conversational banter that occurs with Coltrane, and later Garland during "When the Lights Are Low," resounds as some of the finest moments between these musicians. ....................... ************************************************************************************************

The Doors' third album showed the band in transition, even as "Hello, I Love You" became the Doors' second number-1 hit. The band's songs set Morrison's poetic and often bizarre lyrical imagery against the spiraling keyboards of Manzarek and Krieger's bluesy guitar. Their chart success, however, alienated them from their original audience, who no longer considered them "underground" enough, while their concert audiences increasingly consisted of teenage girls, drawn by Morrison's sexual performing style. "Hello, I Love You" pushed them firmly into the rock mainstream. ............................ ******************************************************************************************** ................... Review by Richie Unterberger ................... The Doors' 1967 albums had raised expectations so high that their third effort was greeted as a major disappointment. With a few exceptions, the material was much mellower, and while this yielded some fine melodic ballad rock in "Love Street," "Wintertime Love," "Summer's Almost Gone," and "Yes, the River Knows," there was no denying that the songwriting was not as impressive as it had been on the first two records. On the other hand, there were first-rate tunes such as the spooky "The Unknown Soldier," with antiwar lyrics as uncompromisingly forceful as anything the band did, and the compulsively riff-driven "Hello, I Love You," which nonetheless bore an uncomfortably close resemblance to the Kinks' "All Day and All of the Night." The flamenco guitar of "Spanish Caravan," the all-out weirdness of "Not to Touch the Earth" (which was a snippet of a legendary abandoned opus, "The Celebration of the Lizard"), and the menacing closer "Five to One" were also interesting. In fact, time's been fairly kind to the record, which is quite enjoyable and diverse, just not as powerful a full-length statement as the group's best albums. ................... ******************************************************************************************

Superbly recorded by Rudy Van Gelder, SOULTRANE is a true jazz classic and quite simply one of Coltrane's finest albums. This wonderful 1958 session features the tenor sax legend leading pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Arthur Taylor on a well-chosen five-song set of jazz and pop standards. The album opens with a lively version of Count Basie's "Good Bait" that allows Coltrane, Chambers and Garland to indulge in some exquisite, highly inventive solos. While Coltrane's versions of Billy Eckstine's "I Want To Talk About You" and Fred Lacey's "Theme For Ernie" are pretty much straight ballad performances, his bold, powerful style brings out the soulful feel of these two beautiful, reflective melodies. Jackson Browne was one of the leading singer/songwriters of the '70s, and THE PRETENDER, his fourth album, under the supervision of Bruce Springsteen's producer, Jon Landau, remains his definitive '70s record. Part of the cadre of L.A. musicians that included the Eagles, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt, Browne stood out as the spokesman for baby boomer angst. This low-key rocker sings in a plaintive tone, concentrating more on lyrics than melody. But his music is complicated and off the beaten-path of standard folk-rock songwriting, sometimes sounding like the soulful Van Morrison, especially on "Your Bright Baby Blues." The title track is a scornful indictment of middle-class America, while "Linda Paloma," led by a Latin beat and harp, is a dreamy South-Of-The-Border love song. Many tracks are just plain confessional and primal. "Daddy's Tune" deals with issues regarding his father ("...make room for my 45's along beside your 78's...nothing survives, but the way we live our lives...") and is a wonderful companion to "The Only Child," a love song to his child. Lost love is a common theme, and the nostalgic "Sleep's Dark And Silent Gate" ("...I don't know what love has to do with happiness...") is yet another deep reflection into his soul. Musically, "Here Come Those Tears Again" is one of the most accessible and well-rounded songs on the album, and this time the lost lover wants to come back. On The Pretender, Jackson Browne took a step back from the precipice so well defined on his first three albums, but doing so didn't seem to make him feel any better. Employing a real producer, Jon Landau, for the first time, Browne made what sounded like a real contemporary rock record, but this made his songs less effective; the ersatz Mexican arrangement of "Linda Paloma" and the bouncy second half of "Daddy's Tune," with its horn charts and guitar solo, undercut the lyrics. The man who had delved so deeply into life's abyss on his earlier albums was in search of escape this time around, whether by crying ("Here Come Those Tears Again"), sleeping ("Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate"), or making peace with estranged love ones ("The Only Child," "Daddy's Tune"). None of it worked, however, and when Browne came to the final track — traditionally the place on his albums where he summed up his current philosophical stance — he delivered "The Pretender," a cynical, sarcastic treatise on moneygrubbing and the shallow life of the suburbs. Primarily inner-directed, the song's defeatist tone demands rejection, but it is also a quintessential statement of its time, the post-Watergate '70s; dire as that might be, you had to admire that kind of honesty, even as it made you wince. ............... *******************************************************************************************

He never again seemed as convincing in his grasp of Americana music and themes, never again seemed as individual, and never again did his limited, slurred bluesy voice seem as ingratiating. He never again topped his triptych of "A Song for You," "Hummingbird," and "Delta Lady," nor did his albums contain such fine tracks as "Dixie Lullaby." Throughout it all, what comes across is Russell's idiosyncratic vision, not only in his approach but in his very construction — none of the songs quite play out as expected, turning country, blues, and rock inside out, not only musically but lyrically. Yes, his voice is a bit of an acquired taste, but it's only appropriate for a songwriter with enough chutzpah to write songs of his own called "I Put a Spell on You" and "Give Peace a Chance." The main problem is in Marty Paich's string/choir arrangements, which too often cross the line into treacle, whereas his charts for big band are far more listenable. Moreover, Charles' sweetness can get a bit cloying, too, although some of the old grit emerges on "Takes Two to Tango." When you blaze as deep and wide a path in this world as Frank Sinatra, you're bound to gain admirers from all avenues on the musical map. Consequently, when Sinatra decided to put out the call for potential duet partners, everyone from Aretha to Julio to U2's Bono leaped at the chance to lend their voice. Considering the eclectic group of guest artists involved, the arrangements are remarkably consistent, and the potential egofest is eschewed in deference to Sinatra's artistry. Though the tunes tackled here are associated immediately with the Sinatra canon, many of them receive an unexpected twist. Among the most unusual is the surreal, David Lynch feel of the Sinatra/Bono "I've Got You Under My Skin," with Bono's haunting wail contrasting Sinatra's gruff pragmatism. Surprisingly, one of the most effective collaborations here is with an instrumentalist, perhaps just because it gives Sinatra's voice that much more room to roam; "One For My Baby," adorned by Kenny G's sax filigrees, has never rung truer. Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine ............... As a marketing concept, Frank Sinatra's comeback album Duets was a complete success. A collection of Sinatra standards produced by Phil Ramone, the record wasn't a duets album in the conventional sense — Sinatra never recorded in the studio with his partners. Instead, the other singers recorded their tracks separately, sometimes in different studios, and the two tracks were pasted together to create the illusion of a duet. In the case of several duet partners, including Bono and Barbara Streisand, this means they rely on camp as a way of making their performances interesting. Sinatra, meanwhile, is oblivious to all of the vocal grandstanding, simply because he recorded his tracks well in advance of their contributions. The result is a mess. Not only do the vocalists never mesh, but the orchestrations are ham-fisted and overblown, relying more on bombast than showmanship. Furthermore, Sinatra's performance is uneven; occasionally his voice is remarkable, but just as often it is thin and worn. Nevertheless, Duets was a gigantic hit, selling over two million copies and becoming Sinatra's single most commercially successful record, though it's easily the worst he released during his lengthy career. Duets rose to number two on the pop charts because of its masterful marketing strategy. The album was promoted as a piece of nostalgia, primarily to baby boomers but also to Generation X as a piece of kitsch. Both approaches ignore the emotional core of Sinatra's music, which is evident on only one track — "One for My Baby," which was essentially a solo performance introduced by an instrumental from saxophonist Kenny G. Perhaps if Duets remained true to the essence of Sinatra's music, it would have been more effective, but as it stands, the album is only admirable as a piece of product, not a piece of music. .............. ************************************************************************************************ ............... Rezensionen............... Nachdem er zehn Jahre kein Studioalbum mehr aufgenommen hatte, kehrte der unverwüstliche Weltstar Frank Sinatra 1993 in die Capitol Studios zurück. Mit einem Staraufgebot, wie es das für ein Studioalbum wohl noch nie gegeben hatte, sang er Duette seiner Klassiker. Zu den Gesangspartnern des damals 77-Jährigen gehörten andere Weltstars wie Charles Aznavour, Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Julio Iglesias, Barbra Streisand, Bono und Luther Vandross. Die Songauswahl umfasst natürlich ausschließlich hochkarätige Klassiker, die direkt mit dem Namen Sinatra verbunden sind: "I've Got A Crush On You", "I've Got You Under My Skin", "New York, New York" oder "The Lady Is A Tramp". Aber nicht nur "Old Blue Eyes" hatte Spaß an diesem "Recording Event Of The Decade", auch seine weltberühmten Mitsänger waren sich der Ehre bewusst. Aznavour: "Ich hätte mir nie träumen lassen, einmal mit Sinatra zu singen!" Gloria Estefan: "Es war für mich die größte Ehre". Iglesias: "Für so eine Gelegenheit muss man dankbar sein!" Positiv verblüfft auch die Paarung mit U2s Bono (I've Got You Under My Skin). In What Now My Love muß sich Aretha Franklin zügeln; New York, New York (Tony Bennett) offenbart schmerzlich stimmlichen Verfall, verhüllt vom gnädigen Hall. Nach Sinatras Maßstäben: zwei Ohren. Stereoplay ............... "Ol' Blue Eyes" is back: Bei seiner Deutschlandtournee im vergangenen Sommer wirkte der King des US-Showbusiness bisweilen kurzatmig, ja er vergaß ganze Liedzeilen. Man hätte nicht vermutet, daß Frank Sinatra noch einmal ein Studio betritt, Songs aufnimmt. Nun, mit "Duets", ist das Unglaubliche doch wahr geworden: Der 77jährige mißt sich mit Entertainern, Soul-Sängern und Rock-Rüpeln - und macht dabei seinem Titel "The Voice" alle Ehre. Den Anstoß zu der Session, die in amerikanischen Blättern als "The Recording Event Of The Decade" angekündigt wurde, gab der Pop-Produzent Phil Ramone. Er konnte den Oldtimer, der 1993 noch jeden zweiten Abend auf der Bühne stand, durch geduldige Überzeugungsarbeit bewegen, seine Erfolgssongs noch einmal zu recyclen. In Hollywoods Capitol-Studio, wo Sinatra bereits 1953 residiert hatte, lief er mit einem mächtig swingenden Orchester unter der Leitung von Patrick Williams erneut zu großer Form auf. Soul-Crooner Luther Vandross assistiert beim Entrèe mit "The Lady Is A Tramp". Aretha Franklin ("What Now My Love") und Barbra Streisand ("I've Cot A Crush On You") fügen sich mit ihren doch so unterschiedlichen Stimmen perfekt in den Fluß der Musik. Eine weniger gute Figur machen Schnulzier Julio Iglesias ("Summer Wind") und die Latino-Lady Gloria Estefan ("Come Rain Or Come Shine"). Dafür geriet "New York New York", Sinatras Hymne an die Stadt der Städte, mit Tony Bennetts Beistand zu einem wahren Song-Skyscraper. Weitere Gäste sind Chanson-Altmeister Charles Aznavour, Säusel-Saxophonist Kenny G. Carly Simon, Anita Baker, Natalie Cole und Liza Minnelli. U2-Sänger Bono müpft in "I've Got You Under My Skin" auf. "Don't you know, you old fool, you never can win", stichelt der Ire.
