"Pet Sounds" ist eine der legendärsten Popscheiben aller Zeiten, unzählige Male beriefen sich Kritiker, Musiker und natürlich auch Plattensammler auf dieses Werk. Brian Wilson war zu diesem Zeitpunkt kein aktives Mitglied der Band, wohl aber der entscheidende Mann für diese Produktion. Die Beach Boys waren damals die erste Rockformation mit eigenem Studio und auch der Freiheit, so zu produzieren, wie sie es sich vorstellten. Diese künstlerische Freiheit nutzten Wilson und Co. zu Kompositionen, die mehr als den bisherigen Surfingsound boten, sie waren vielschichtiger und variabler in der Instrumentierung. Was blieb ist der unwiderstehliche, mehrstimmige Gesang und die Beibehaltung traditioneller Sounds mit Ursprüngen bei Rhythm & Blues, dabei blieb die Einbeziehung von Fremdklängen, wie es die Beatles in der ähnlich bedeutenden LP "Revolver" auch vornahmen, eher begrenzt. Sieben Jahre hat Captiol/USA gebraucht, um die Originalalben der wichtigsten amerikanischen Rockgruppe der mittsechziger Jahre, der Beach Boys, als CD herauszubringen. Fans, die nicht zu den zwischenzeitlich veröffentlichten Importen (siehe stereoplay 11/89) oder teuren Sonderpressung (stereoplay 9/89) gegriffen haben, werden für ihre Geduld jetzt doppelt und dreifach belohnt. Die klangtechnische Aufbereitung und besonders der redaktionelle Aufwand dieser Veröffentlichungen setzen Maßstäbe. Als Vorlagen dienten akribisch recherchierte, qualitativ optimale Bänder, die vor dem CD-Transfer "No Noice"-überarbeitet wurden. Und mit der Ausnahme von "Pet Sounds" überspielte man jeweils zwei LPs plus drei bis fünf Bonus-Tracks auf eine CD. Der auf einem Ohr taube Ober- Beach-Boy Brian Wilson mischte "Pet Sounds", sein stilbildendes Meisterwerk von 1966, nur in Mono ab. Die CD bietet nun drei bisher nie gehörte Zusatztitel und ein 24seitiges Booklet, das seinesgleichen sucht. Neben Reproduktionen der originalen LP-Vorder- und Rückseiten enthält es eine persönliche Einleitung von Brain Wilson, genaue Aufnahmedaten, eine detaillierte musikhistorische Würdigung des Albums sowie viele unbekannte Fotos. Dieselbe Liebe zum Detail spiegeln die Booklets von "Surfin' Safari / Surfin' USA" (CDP 7 93691 2, 1962/63, AAD, Mono/Stereo, 55:56, I:06-10, K:07-08, R:08), "Surfer Girl / Shut Down Vol.2 (CDP 7 93692 2, 1963/64, AAD, Stereo, 59:56, I:07-10, K:08, R:09), "Little Deuce Coupe / All Summer Long" (CDP 7 93693 2, 1963/64, AAD, Stereo, 59:30, I:08-10, K:08, R:09) und "Today! / Summer Days (And Summer Nights!)" The best Beach Boys album, and one of the best of the 1960s. The group here reached a whole new level in terms of both composition and production, layering tracks upon tracks of vocals and instruments to create a richly symphonic sound. Conventional keyboards and guitars were combined with exotic touches of orchestrated strings, bicycle bells, buzzing organs, harpsichords, flutes, theremin, Hawaiian-sounding string instruments, Coca-Cola cans, barking dogs, and more. It wouldn't have been a classic without great songs, and this has some of the group's most stunning melodies, as well as lyrical themes which evoke both the intensity of newly born love affairs and the disappointment of failed romance (add in some general statements about loss of innocence and modern-day confusion as well). The spiritual quality of the material is enhanced by some of the most gorgeous upper-register male vocals (especially by Brian and Carl Wilson) ever heard on a rock record. "Wouldn't It Be Nice," "God Only Knows," "Caroline No," and "Sloop John B" (the last of which wasn't originally intended to go on the album) are the well-known hits, but equally worthy are such cuts as "You Still Believe in Me," "Don't Talk," "I Know There's an Answer," and "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times." It's often said that this is more of a Brian Wilson album than a Beach Boys recording (session musicians played most of the parts), but it should be noted that the harmonies are pure Beach Boys (and some of their best). Massively influential upon its release (although it was a relatively low seller compared to their previous LPs), it immediately vaunted the band into the top level of rock innovators among the intelligentsia, especially in Britain, where it was a much bigger hit. ..........................Pet Sounds......................... ***************************************************************************************************

Jackson Browne's early career was inextricably linked to the singer-songwriter movement of the 70s, and LATE FOR THE SKY has proven to be one of the era's strongest and most enduring releases. Browne's reflective songwriting style attained a new level of maturity on songs such as "Fountain Of Sorrow" and "For A Dancer," the latter a strikingly literate meditation on death. The high points on LATE FOR THE SKY are the title track and "Before the Deluge," two brooding songs of personal and social apocalypse that bookend the album and seem to reflect the disillusionment and weather-beaten mood of the counter-cultural generation in the early '70s. At the beginning of his solo career, McCartney took the term rather literally, recording virtually alone, playing and singing nearly all the parts himself. Nowhere is that approach more effective than on RAM, arguably his finest solo recording. Admittedly, he had a little help from guitarist Hugh McCracken and a couple of others here and there, but for the most part, this is Paul's show. Instead of succumbing to self-indulgence, though, he used this forum to focus his artistic energies, thus turning out some of the best songs of his post-Beatles career. ................................. The opening "Too Many People" is an appealingly melodic rocker that combines the two sides of McCartney--melodious popster and unabashed rocker--to unprecedented effect. He gets bluesy on "3 Legs," homespun-acoustic on "Heart of the Country," and appealingly jocular on the radio hit "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," whose whimsy recalls his best light-hearted Beatles efforts. What he maintains throughout all this is his vision, never getting sidetracked into loopy experimentalism or sentimental mush. RAM is McCartney at the peak of his considerable powers, spontaneous-sounding but still expertly crafted. ................................. ************************************************************************************************** .......................... Review by Stephen Thomas Erlewine ............................ After the breakup, Beatles fans expected major statements from the three chief songwriters in the Fab Four. John and George fulfilled those expectations — Lennon with his lacerating, confessional John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Harrison with his triple-LP All Things Must Pass — but Paul McCartney certainly didn't, turning toward the modest charms of McCartney, and then crediting his wife Linda as a full-fledged collaborator on its 1971 follow-up, Ram. Where McCartney was homemade, sounding deliberately ragged in parts, Ram had a fuller production yet retained that ramshackle feel, sounding as if it were recorded in a shack out back, not far from the farm where the cover photo of Paul holding the ram by the horns was taken. It's filled with songs that feel tossed off, filled with songs that are cheerfully, incessantly melodic; it turns the monumental symphonic sweep of Abbey Road into a cheeky slice of whimsy on the two-part suite "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey." All this made Ram an object of scorn and derision upon its release (and for years afterward, in fact), but in retrospect it looks like nothing so much as the first indie pop album, a record that celebrates small pleasures with big melodies, a record that's guileless and unembarrassed to be cutesy. At the beginning of his solo career, McCartney took the term rather literally, recording virtually alone, playing and singing nearly all the parts himself. Nowhere is that approach more effective than on RAM, arguably his finest solo recording. Admittedly, he had a little help from guitarist Hugh McCracken and a couple of others here and there, but for the most part, this is Paul's show. Instead of succumbing to self-indulgence, though, he used this forum to focus his artistic energies, thus turning out some of the best songs of his post-Beatles career. ................................. The opening "Too Many People" is an appealingly melodic rocker that combines the two sides of McCartney--melodious popster and unabashed rocker--to unprecedented effect. He gets bluesy on "3 Legs," homespun-acoustic on "Heart of the Country," and appealingly jocular on the radio hit "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey," whose whimsy recalls his best light-hearted Beatles efforts. What he maintains throughout all this is his vision, never getting sidetracked into loopy experimentalism or sentimental mush. John and George fulfilled those expectations — Lennon with his lacerating, confessional John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Harrison with his triple-LP All Things Must Pass — but Paul McCartney certainly didn't, turning toward the modest charms of McCartney, and then crediting his wife Linda as a full-fledged collaborator on its 1971 follow-up, Ram. Where McCartney was homemade, sounding deliberately ragged in parts, Ram had a fuller production yet retained that ramshackle feel, sounding as if it were recorded in a shack out back, not far from the farm where the cover photo of Paul holding the ram by the horns was taken. It's filled with songs that feel tossed off, filled with songs that are cheerfully, incessantly melodic; it turns the monumental symphonic sweep of Abbey Road into a cheeky slice of whimsy on the two-part suite "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey." But this compilation drawn from those albums, comprising the group's nine Top 40 hits plus "Desperado," demonstrates that this evenhandedness did not extend to singles — as far as those go, the Eagles belong to Glenn Frey and Don Henley. The tunes are melodic, and the arrangements — full of strummed acoustic guitars over a rock rhythm section often playing a shuffle beat, topped by tenor-dominated harmonies — are immediately engaging. There is also a lyrical consistency to the songs, which often concern romantic uncertainties in an atmosphere soaked in intoxicants. The narrators of the songs usually seem exhausted, if not satiated, and the loping rhythms are appropriate to these impressions. All of which means that, unlike the albums from which they come, these songs make up a collection consistent in mood and identity, which may help explain why Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) works so much better than the band's previous discs and practically makes them redundant. No wonder it was such a big hit out of the box, topping the charts and becoming the first album ever certified platinum. Still, there must be more to it, since the album wasn't just a big hit, but one of the biggest ever, becoming one of the very few discs to cross the threshold of 20 million copies and competing for the title of best-selling album of all time. There may be no explaining that, really, except to note that this was the pervasive music of the first half of the 1970s, and somehow it never went away. ........................... ************************************************************************************************

Though 1974's ELDORADO is subtitled "A Symphony by the Electric Light Orchestra" and features both a portentous spoken-word prologue and an instrumental finale, this album marks Jeff Lynne's final break from classical-rock fusion in the Emerson, Lake & Palmer sense. Though there're a handful of recognizable lifts from classical and romantic composers, particularly in the swelling opening of "Boy Blue" and the grandly-titled "Illusions in G Major," most of the orchestral arrangements here are in service to Lynne's increasingly accomplished pop songs. One of those is "Can't Get It Out of My Head," a classic '70s pop ballad and FM radio staple that's among Lynne's very best work. Though this was the only hit single on ELDORADO, the rest of the album is nearly as strong. "Laredo Tornado," a Lennonesque mid-tempo strut recalling ELO's earlier hit "Showdown," is a particular standout. Worldwide superstardom was just around the corner. ..................... ******************************************************************************************** ................... Review by Bruce Eder .......................... This is the album where Jeff Lynne finally found the sound he'd wanted since co-founding Electric Light Orchestra three years earlier. Up to this point, most of the group's music had been self-contained — Lynne, Richard Tandy, et al., providing whatever was needed, vocally or instrumentally, even if it meant overdubbing their work layer upon layer. Lynne saw the limitations of this process, however, and opted for the presence of an orchestra — it was only 30 pieces, but the result was a much richer musical palette than the group had ever had to work with, and their most ambitious and successful record up to that time. Indeed, Eldorado was strongly reminiscent in some ways of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Not that it could ever have the same impact or be as distinctive, but it had its feet planted in so many richly melodic and varied musical traditions, yet made it all work in a rock context, that it did recall the Beatles classic. It was a very romantic work, especially on the opening "Eldorado Overture," which was steeped in a wistful 1920s/1930s notion of popular fantasy (embodied in movies and novels like James Hilton's Lost Horizon and Somerset Maugham's The Razor's Edge) about disillusioned seekers. It boasted Lynne's best single up to that time, "Can't Get It Out of My Head," which most radio listeners could never get out of their respective heads, either. The integration of the orchestra would become even more thorough on future albums, but Eldorado was notable for mixing the band and orchestra (and a choir) in ways that did no violence to the best elements of both. ......................... *****************************************************************************************

As its title implies, JAZZ IMPRESSIONS OF BLACK ORPHEUS was Guaraldi's take on the groundbreaking Jobim score for the BLACK ORPHEUS film. While most of the album finds the prescient Guaraldi getting in on the ground floor of the U.S. bossa nova craze (though his take on these tunes doesn't feel particularly Brazilian), the key song here is in fact a Guaraldi original, "Cast Your Fate to the Wind." With its simple harmonic progression and strong, sunny melody, this unassuming jazz tune somehow made its way to the top of the 1962 pop charts, a rare moment of true jazz crossover. .................... ************************************************************************************************

This trio set by Shelly Manne & His Friends (consisting of the drummer/leader, pianist André Previn, and bassist Leroy Vinnegar) was a surprise best-seller and is now considered a classic. Previn (who is really the main voice) leads the group through eight themes from the famous play, including "Get Me to the Church on Time," "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face," "I Could Have Danced All Night," and "On the Street Where You Live." A very appealing set that is easily recommended; an audiophile version has also been released on CD by DCC Jazz. The musical interpretation from the Broadway play is magnificent featuring Andre Previn in his best jazz mode and the instrumental give and take with Manne and Leroy Vinnegar yields some truly memorable riffs. It is as innovative now as it was when recorded 40 years ago.
